On Sunday 9th December we participated in a mini festival hosted by Redland Hockey Club at Badminton School. It has been a few years since we have had a festival on our doorstep and we took full advantage - 5 teams and 50 academy players represented Westbury and United Banks at Under 10 and Under 12 level. We saw some great hockey played with fantastic spirit and sportsmanship. We had plenty of volunteer coaches and umpires on hand, and the touchline was packed with enthusiastic and encouraging parents. This is what academy hockey is all about. Thank you to everybody who was involved, we have plans in the pipeline for more local hockey in the second half of the season.
St Ursulas E-ACT Academy This is John Swann from Westbury & United Banks HC kicking off the season’s outreach project. In these photos we are helping to deliver hockey to year 6 at St. Ursula’s E-Act Academy on 26th October. You can see we are using our brand new kit supplied by England Hockey. ElmLea Junior School Jon Bower took time out from his working day to support our Outreach programme this time with ElmLea Juniors. Here is what Jon had to say.. Excellent afternoon off work helping @ElmleaJuniorSch Y5 girls hockey team in a tournament @BadmintonSchool - undefeated and without conceding they won it; lots of @WestburyHockey and CliftonLadiesHC players in side - credit to regular coach Emma Hinkins who couldn’t be there
During the Women’s World Cup this summer we entered another, rather less energetic England Hockey competition, one that required some creative thought and no need to step onto a pitch. The goal was to win a bag full of new quick sticks equipment. In typical Westbury and UB winning style, victory was ours and just in time for the new season, our sparkly new kit was delivered; 25 sticks, 25 balls and games cards, all in a lovely new bag. It was just as well, on our opening Sunday academy session we coached over 180 children, including many novices who had need for the sticks. So a big thank you to England Hockey, we will be using the equipment not only on a Sunday morning, but also for our outreach sessions that we deliver to local primary schools
On Wednesday 21 March we were interviewed on BBC Radio Bristol to talk about the great work we are doing as a club in terms of the development on the field with our senior sides and Academy as well as our work in the community with Quiksticks taking place with local schools. You can listen to Club Captain Will Jones, 1st team Captain Gareth Nichols and Welfare Officer Jon Bower being interviewed by Geoff Twentyman during the first half hour or so of the Sports Store show which looks at grassroots sport each week. The interview with Geoff Twentyman has been split into two parts below Part 1 Part 2
We're grateful to Kate and Helen for taking time out of their busy schedules to spend time with us. We hope you all enjoyed this session, It’s not every week you get to see gold medal Olympians and we had 2! Our Academy goes from strength to strength with over 200 children registered in the U8-U14 age groups. Our U14s are now successfully feeding into the senior Westbury Men's teams and Westberries Ladies Saturday sides. Our U16s boys side continues to thrive in the Badgers league and our recently launched U18s boys played their first competitive match against a combination of our Men’s 1sts and 2nds. We have some photos, the recording from the BBC Points West News programme and the audio recording from BBC Radio Bristol here which we wanted to share with you all. BBC Radio Bristol Interview BBC Points West covered the event
We are pleased and very excited to announce our plans to establish an Under 18’s side at Westbury & United Banks Hockey Club. We are making this move in order to improve the transition of our junior players into senior hockey. There will be an increased focus on performance and we hope to give our promising young players every opportunity they need to achieve their goals on the pitch – from Westbury & United Banks Hockey Club 1st XI, county, regional and even international level. We plan to form our U18 squad from the New Year with three dedicated training sessions and three friendly matches against local teams. This will provide the platform to enter the relevant local Leagues and at a national level, the England Hockey Championship, in the 2018 / 2019 season. The development of an U18 side will provide the platform for this age group to compete competitively against both local and national opposition, and through a structured training program in line with the club’s 1st XI, will provide a pathway and opportunity for players to make the step up to gain selection for the 1st and 2nd XI senior men’s teams. Ben Rogers, our newly appointed 1st XI coach, will run the coaching program for the U18s, and the U16 / colts will continue to be run by Joe Thomas. As a player, Ben has played for Wales having gained over 50 senior international caps and played in several European Championships and World Cup Qualifier tournaments. Additionally, he has played in the England premier league for a number of seasons and recently has played and coached in the premier leagues in Japan and Singapore, as well as having coached university and
Both the club (and of course his family!) are thrilled to say that G Nicholls has been selected for England Hockey's Futures Cup!!! What does this mean? G Nicholls has been selected as one of 18 boys (16 Outfield and 2 Goalkeepers) to represent West Hockey at the U15 Futures Cup. This is a tournament held in St. Albans just before the August Bank holiday weekend. He will play against teams from the North, East and South of England plus Scotland and Wales. We wanted to take this moment to wish him all the best on this fantastic achievement and we are all rooting for him! The Under 16s under the guidance of Mike Small completed their season Sunday by winning the Bristol U16s' 11-a-side tournament at Bristol & West's Winterborne pitch for the second time. The league had already been secured for a third successive season with the team losing just once. On the way they set a club goal scoring record with a 17-0 win at Weston-Super-Mare. As games progressed they proved to be the dominant team scoring goals in their next four games within the first couple of minutes to wrap up victories against Weston (4-0), Westbury U14s (2-0), Cheltenham (3-0) Cirencester (5-0). The game verses Cheltenham had a back story. In the England Hockey Cup a Cheltenham team made up of elite players from Cheltenham Public Schools beat Westbury 16-1 and went on to win the competition. The Cheltenham team on Sunday was a more realistic club side. Westbury were always in charge of the game and wiped away the memory of that heavy defeat with a well deserved 3-0 result. The Cirencester game needed to be won because three sides were still in
