A mixed bag of results on the second league weekend. Both the thirds and the Wizards moved to the top of their divisions with convincing wins.
1st XI: Meaks writes: How disappointed the team was on the final whistle just shows how far the side has come in the last few seasons. The first half was a tight tense affair with the best chance falling to Goody, their keeper didn't know much about the save. Mason used his Jedi powers to disperse Isca's defence to run unchallenged in a straight line from halfway into their D and pass the ball into the goal. Then the quality and sharpness of our play all but disappeared. Psycho got a deserved yellow and they equalised. I'm still not entirely sure why I got a yellow and Isca scrambled a winner. 2 goals in the last 10 minutes. Isca probably feel they deserved it, we feel they got away with a fortunate 3 points.Marlborough away next week.
2nd XI : Slider says: Bugger! 2 games, 2 losses, nil points. (even though the league website strangely shows us having won yesterday??!!??), but both have been spirited performances showing the famous Westbury never-say-die attitude. In truth, we were 2nd best for much of the game with several players having to play in unfamiliar positions and very few of us (Skipper included) playing anywhere near our best. Losing Straun after 10 mins to a nasty stick-in-eye incident, meant no sub and tired legs. A much improved 2nd half display earned us a JPS equaliser to their early goal. Then it was Westbury domination for a while, which perhaps should have nicked us a winner. Sadly, 2 breaks brought Somerset 2 goals and the points were theirs.Tim Dawson was clearly the best player on the pitch, having a storming match at sweeper. Shame, that as a unit we couldn't quite follow his lead. We'll get it right next week.
3rd XI : The thirds went top of their division with a demolition job on S Glos. Even playing short handed in the first half, the thirds took a commanding lead. Three hat-tricks were scored by Nathan Walkey, Alex Taylor and Tim Hancock in his first game back. Tom Taylor sank the other one as S Glos were sunk without trace.
Wanderers: Football is a game of two halves, this was a game of two pitches. Both N Bristol and the Wanderers took time to put any cohesion into their game on the water based pitch, and it was the visitors who put together the best move. Neither side looked likely to score. Then came a torrential downpour and the game had to be stopped because the pitch became a lake. The game was then switched to the sand pitch and then the Wanderers looked far more impressive, coming close with several stinging shots. The final 16 minutes of the first half was completed with the sides still deadlocked at 0-0. Then it was back to the water to leave the sand pitch for the Warriors. Goals did come in the second half when Rich Hobson struck twice, his first goals for the club. JJ returning from the heat of the Algarve aims to complete his ton of goals and then retire to preserve his body, having opted against cryogenically preserving himself! At the start of the game he needed ten, now its down to nine.
Wizards: There aren't many bigger results than Firebrands 2 Westbury 11. The Wizards were 3 goals up in 15 minutes courtesy of Crofts (swept in from a corner), Dom Harris (a thundering strike) and Fazza (after going round the keeper). Fazza's second came when Alan Christopher (taking a time out and lying down in the D) passed the ball from a prone position to Pete. Alan made it 5 at half time following a lot of good passing. The quality of hockey the Wizards served up was impressive. After half time Firebrands dropped a man into midfield and scored from a through ball. This woke the Wizards up and the flowing hockey was back. 'New boy' Doug Scott made it 6, and from the restart Westbury stole the ball and Dom Harris made it 7. Then came two from Martin palmer, the first exchanging passes with Mike Harvey, the second from one of the many surging runs by right back Chris Cocks. Fazza then completed his hat-trick. A great through ball give him the chance to beat the defender and goalie to score. Poker then took a ball in the throat and as last man was judged to have prevented a goal and a stroke awarded and scored. Mark Crofts completed the scoring to make it 11-2. This was an awesome performance by everyone in the side. The umpiring needs to be commended, and the home captain wished us the best and hoped that we would win the division. The game was played in a competitive but good spirited manner. Well played the Wizards top of the table already!
Warriors: Somerset Gryphons took a very quick 2 goal lead against the Warriors and then added a third. It was then the Warriors woke up and started to compete. Jon Bower, Graeme Brown and Jamie Cranfield had a lot of bite in midfield. Their approach work could not be turned into goalscoring chances and it is hard to recall the visiting keeper having to stretch himself despite having to face 5 or 6 short corners. The Warriors lost Jon Bower with a blow to his hand. In the second half they had the greater proportion of the play, but were unable to press the advantage into goals. Gryphons relied on breakaways and scored a late goal which Martin Eland came very close to saving, the ball was deflected just inside the post instead of outside. A hard working Warriors side, gave it a good go and their tenacity prevented Gryphons from running away with the game.
Widgets: The Widgets put on a good performance down at the seaside, with Jon Fox scoring an equaliser. Despite it being a very even game Weston just managed to sneak a winner. Will Glynn won praise in his role as sweeper from George Banting, because there was no one else to fill this specialist position. Next week's game v S Glos offers a real chance of the Widgets getting their first league result of the season.

1st XI: Meaks writes: Our first game in Prem 1 for a few seasons and we started with a 2-1 win. The first goal came off a couple of Gloucester feet before trickling over the line, Nellor claiming the goal as he apparently had touched the ball in the D about 5 minutes earlier. JP could have put us 2 up immediately after half time, Frosty having sold the keeper completely, but from the top of the D with an open goal Jon's new stick stopped working and the ball went wide.Gloucs equalised but we fought back again. A superb move down the right saw Psycho arrive at exactly the right time on the spot to put the ball in the at the far post. "A proper left winger's goal" says C. Poulsom. We may have rode our luck at times but our workrate and discipline was exellent throughout. A real team performance.
2nd XI : Slider's report: The seconds new season began with an encouraging 10 minutes of sublime hockey from the boys. However, in true Westbury tradition we then conceded a sloppy goal. Arse! For 20 minutes of the first half, we were then very poor, with slow passing and a distinct lack of movement off the ball. Luckily, the second half saw vast improvements in both efforts and skills, and we were nearly rewarded with a couple of near efforts from shorts narrowly missing the target. Coatesy and Tucker came closest to equalising and the skipper should probably have turned a rocket from Coatesy into goal. Shame. We probably deserved to get something from the game and certainly showed that we can compete and do well this year in this league. Bring on the Gryphons next week.
3rd XI : The third team looked very good value for their demolition of Firebrands. The Embers were once a team that played development sides and used to run in mammoth scores, now they have to battle it out with well balanced and experienced sides like the thirds. They came up short because Westbury were able to dominate all phases of the game. Nathan Walkey opened the scoring. Tonka drilled in a shot that had the spectators gasping! A top corner screamer (Sorry Tom I had my back to play and missed it). One unkind spectator called "Were you going bottom left and finished top right?" Nick ? scored twice on his debut and Christian Bell wrapped it all up with a well taken goal that gave him a lot of personal pleasure. This was an impressive performance by the threes on a hot afternoon. Had it not been for some good goalkeeping there would have been a bigger margin of victory.
Wanderers: The Wanderers played Firebrands at their new venue at Henbury School. The home side established a 3-1 lead and were well worth their advantage having played some very good hockey. The Wanderers never give up and as Firebrands began to tire in the heat, Westbury scored twice to bring the game back to 4-4. However, there was a twist in the tail, and in the closing moments of the game Firebrands snatched a late winner. The goals were shared out between Alex Taylor, Tufty, Geoff Rickard and Si Andrews.
Wizards: The Wizards could easily have been 5 or 6 nil up at half time against W Glos, but the visiting keeper pulled off a string of outstanding saves. Westbury's play was very good and there were some sweeping attacks with Fazza and Alan Christopher playing well in their wide roles. Early in the second half it was Bees, making his return from injury, who conjured up the vital opening goal. His well struck through ball found the perfect gap and Martin Palmer was on hand at the far post to sweep it in. Shortly afterwards, Mike Harvey snapped up a close range rebound to put us in the driving seat. Fazza then added number three. We took our foot off the gas and W Glos sneaked a goal. A good team performance was rounded off by a second goal from Mike Harvey. This one he blasted high into the net to seal an excellent start for the Wizards in the league.
Warriors: The Warriors came up with what can only be described as a massive win. On paper it shows clearly how huge the win was: W Glos 3rd XI 1 Westbury 6th XI 2. Will Lee accepted a call to the squad on the morning of the game and played well. The goals were scored by Dom Harris and Pete Thomas with W Glos getting their goal in the dying minutes of the game. This was even more significant as several regular Warriors from last season were on duty with the Wizards and several Widgets were drafted in. It hurt the home team so much, one player was seen to throw his stick down in disgust and kicking his kit bag. This has to go down as one of the biggest wins in the Warriors history. Well done to Pete and his team.
Widgets: The Widgets took the field with several youngsters against a Frys team who beat them comprehensively twice last season (8-0 and 7-2). Will Glyn showed a lot of skill and Will Holmes played with a lot of confidence after his successful first season last year. Frys built up a 3-0 lead, but Westbury did have a couple of breaks. From one of these Jay Lutwych placed his shot accurately in the corner. The rest of the game was played trying to contain a hard running Frys team. The Widgets can learn from this game, analyses their individual performances and come back stronger in subsequent games. Stuart Horn did well with a good number of shots he kept out, the pick of them was the head high shot he pushed over the bar. George Banting sweated blood in the Westbury cause and Staun Wilkins did his best to add some flair to the midfield. Frys ran in seven more goals to win 10-1. The important things is that the Widgets had a squad of 13 on a day when a good number of players higher up the club were absent.

1st XI: The first team had what is turning into a local Derby with Robs who are based at Coombe Dingle and Red Maids School on our own doorstep. Trailing 1-0 Westbury conceded two late goals. Next week the real business begins with Gloucester.
2nd XI : The seconds found themselves traveling to Whitchurch when the Welsh club were unable to raise a side to come to Bristol. The opposition had some quality about them and established a 3-0 lead. Moonie scored to give some hope. There was some frustration shown by the team that saw a card being brandished by the umpire and the seconds were unable to make further inroads into the Whitchurch score. The final result on a sticky afternoon was a 3-1 defeat.
3rd XI : In contrast the thirds were given acres of space in what must have been the the sloppiest marking by a home side in the history of the world! The damage in the first half was done almost single handed by Nathan Walkey. Nathan made his debut in October 1990 scoring 4 times for the Wizards at Stroud. After a 14 year break, by half time he had hammered in a hat-trick, two from identical shots. Whitchurch were denied a goal when Paxo made a couple of outstanding stops. Christian Bell scored just after the break and than Nathan matched his debut game by going round the keeper for his forth. Further goals followed at regular intervals from Gareth Nichols (2), Tonka and Alex Taylor. Alex was also denied a goal when his reverse stick shot hit the top corner of the goal and cross bar and rebounded back into play. Some spectators thought it should have been a goal. A later shot hit the post as well from a Westbury forward. It was at this stage that Whitchurch seemed to give up marking, Belly was in so much space unmarked he must have felt very lonely! He took up some great wide positions and was fed a lot of good ball, setting up numerous chances. Whitchurch did snatch a couple of goals, but came close to losing another 7 or 8 themselves. Along with the two off of the goal frame the home keeper pulled off a string of fine saves when Westbury often had a two or three on one with him. This was a good team performance with the ball being swung around the pitch very effectively. Next week Firebrands await in the first league match for the thirds.
Wanderers: The Wanderers had that rare taste of defeat at the hands of a strong Whitchurch side. Geoff Rickard scored the Wanderers goal.
Wizards: The Wizards scored two quick goals to take control of their game. Mike Harvey had the whole goal to aim at and duly scored when a short rebounded to him. Martin Palmer glanced a great Croftsy through ball in. The home team pulled one back, before a Mark Colton flick from a short was cleverly edged in by Duncan Ogilvie. In the second half the defence of Colton, Palmer T, Cameron and Croker dealt effectively with what the home team could throw at them, but on the occasions they got through Paxo, playing his second match, was in good form. Fazza scored straight after the interval when Duncan's square ball give him a one on one with the keeper. Duncan later glanced a Croftsy cross shot into the net. Gareth Nichols created a goal or the new skipper with his through ball. Then came two thumping short corner goals from Mark Colton. The first one was the perfect strike that would have beaten any keeper at any level. Not the strongest of opposition, but still a job well done.
Warriors: The Warriors found themselves up against the Veterans side from Whitchurch. A tough game ended in a 7-2 defeat. However, there was a goal from Martin Travis after a two year break from the game and a cracking goal from Jon Fox. This game was good preparation for the Warriors tough league game v W Glos III next week.

1st XI: Westbury notched up their 6th win in the Wotton-Under-Edge tournament. 2nd XI : The second team were not particularly stretched by the visitors and ran in six goals with Neller getting his first Westbury hat-trick
3rd XI : The third team out-classed Yate and scored 7 without reply with Christian Bell leading the way with 4.
Wanderers: Tufty reports: Matt Taylor took charge of the Wanderers for the first time and confidently announced his 12. There was then heard the pitifull cry of Mark Crofts saying "what about me?". Note to selection committee... counting is obviously not Matts strong point. The game was won comfortably 4-1. On a warm day it was nice to spend it at the beach! There were good performances throughout the team but special mention should go to the 2 new boys, Alex Payne at right defence and Rich Hobson at right attack. Rich showed a good touch and gave some good unselfish pull backs (he'll do well!). First half goals from Simon Andrews who was quickest to the loose ball after a tenacious battle between Mark Crofts & the goalie. In the second half Steve Millman finished a sweeping move that covered the length of the pitch. Yate pulled a goal back in a rare foray but the win was completed by Crofts and a short corner from Millman.
Warriors: The Warriors took 14 players to Devizes to play the home team's 3rd XI. Devizes took a first half lead, whilst the Warriors came close from a couple of short corners. Shep twice had to clear shots off the line, but Devizes turned round 1-0 up. After the break a home defender played an overhead tennis volley to stop a shot going in under the crossbar but the penalty stroke was not given! Mike Harvey then skillfully rounded the keeper but grubbed his push into the empty net giving a defender time to run and clear it before it crossed the line. A number of passes came up short because we hadn't adapted to the surface which tended to have a lot of friction, especially when sticks were in contact with it. Westbury had their best spell of pressure but it was Devizes who got a goal on a counter attack. The home team wrapped it up with a third, but the Warriors came close to getting a consolation goal from a series of shorts, but were just off target.
Widgets: The Widgets (who looked suspiciously like the same 14 who turned out for the Warriors) took on a young Devizes team. This time it was Westbury who opened the scoring when Dom Harris hit a long pass to Martin Palmer who flicked it in. Not long afterwards Jon Fox set up Huw Woodward for his first goal for the club. Huw showed a lot of skill and a fair turn of pace. His goal was a great reverse stick scoop into the roof of the net. As Westbury began to tire Devizes were able to press forward and scored a goal. Mike Harvey then coolly took control at sweeper and picked off a number of passes when the home team had 3s or 4s on 1 to hold out for a 2-1 win. Westbury even provided umpires at one end for both games. The 14 who managed both games were Banting S, Colton, Palmer T, Croker, Sheppard, Cooper, Goulsbra, Harris, Woodward, Banting G, Palmer M, Ogilvie, Harvey and Fox J.

Match comments
1st XI: Meaks reported that the firsts had a a stiff test away at Bath Buccs. With Westbury not at full strengths they still managed to give a good account of themselves against Buccs' National League squad. At the end of the game the home team then had a fitness training session doing sprints and shutles.
2nd XI : The second team opened their season at home to Cardiff seconds. In the first half Ben Tucker looked very sharp spreading the ball round quickly and accurately. The short corner routine was a bit rusty and Moonie was unable to get a strike on any of the half dozen earned in the game. When the goal came it was Limbo sweeping the ball in from the back line after it had been moved round the D with several slick passes. Westbury looked the team on top, but Cardiff still looked dangerous on the break. After the interval a poor back pass let Cardiff attack and from that move a mistimed challenge ended with a penalty stroke, which Cardiff duely converted. To make matters worse from another rare attack they earned a short corner and banged it into the corner. The seconds had good spells of pressure but were unable to covert them. Into the last ten minutes Westbury earned a free hit five metes out on the left hand side of the D. Tom Alger, with his back to goal, demanded the ball on his open stick. He stopped it, adjusted his feet and walloped in a superb reverse stick strike for the equaliser. One spectator unkindly said he's been practicing that for 15 years and its only come off once! Never-the-less it was a stunning goal. With time almost up and a few Westbury moves coming to nothing it looked as if a 2-2 draw would be the final result. Not so! Moonie who had hardly a sniff at goal, popped up on the far post to hammer home a cross from the right to make it 3-2. A good result for a team that had several Wanderers in the squad.
