1st XI: (Match report from Psycho) A physical game that the umpires struggled to control. We played well and deserved to win, which one of the umpires confirmed after the game, we did all the right things, just couldn't score in their D which they packed full of players each time we attacked. A solid defensive performance but we did have one very lucky escape. I don't think many teams will go to Hereford this season and take any points from them, it's a long journey, it's cold, the pitch creates a lot of bobbling and they are a reasonable side. I think the home tie will prove who are the stronger side.
2nd XI: (Comments by Skip) A fiery encounter with the auld enemy ended in a 1-1 draw with JJ (again) netting for us in the 67th minute. The opposition were very physical, which we matched to their dismay. Some wayward umpiring (to say the least) aided W Glos to the opener, but we were by far the superior side and got our just deserts. The best "team" display we've produced this season with many names in the hat for man-of-the-match, which went to a deserving Phil Foster….selection is going to be tough this Monday for a relishing trip to Swansea Univ who lost yesterday. Let's get another win this Saturday lads and further push our promotion campaign...C'mon you red n' green!
3rd XI: 4 straight league wins for the revived thirds says it all with Gavin moving to pole position on the starting grid. Already the thirds look the dominating force in their division.
Wanderers: A moral victory for the Wanderers against Clevedon in halving last year’s deficit. How physical was it this time?

Wizards: The Wizards bounced back after last week’s defeat with a 1-0 victory against North Somerset.

Warriors: The Warriors too were winners after their heavy loss last week. This was based on some resolute defending against a skilful Gloucester team. Joint man-of-the-match Dave Ratcliffe carved out the opening for Pete Thomas to score mid-way through the second half. Martin Palmer picked up a couple of rebounds before scoring to make the game safe. Martin Eland (the other half of the man-of-the-match duo) made some good saves as Gloucester pressed towards the end. We also played the whole game without getting any short corners!

Comment: Well done to the top three teams who cemented their places at the top of their divisions with clear victories. The Wanderers and the Wizards look as though they took their opponents right down to the wire, but finished just short of any points.
1st XI: (Match comments from the Bees Good solid performance. No one lacked fight and commitment. Good clean sheet. Just got to keep going!
2nd XI: (Slider’s view) Missed flick by TC, missed open goal by JJ, wonder save from Clint. Top performance by the boys playing about 50mins of sublime hockey. We went a goal down then levelled within a minute. Scored from the 2nd half push back even though Franky had immediately hit it 40yrds off our own back-line! I got one of theirs sent-off (which was fun) and then their goalie was yellowed after up-ending JJ. Top of the league!
3rd XI: (A report from Sparky) The thirds had a scrappy but thoroughly deserved 4 - 2 victory against a West Glos team who tried to break as many rules as possible. Before the start our eagle-eyed club captain spotted that they were trying some illegal doubling up, bringing up a Vets team player into the threes. Given West Glos had played with 12+ in their earlier game, and their 4ths had also completed a game in the morning, this was clearly CHEATING.
Our first 10 minutes were the best, going 2-0 up and playing well. Our game got weaker as we started our rotations, often lacking width. However we went 3-0 up before conceding a soft goal just before half time. The second half West Glos resorted to crude stick tackles and hands in the back. Unfortunately they were often able to get away with it, especially in their defence. A breakaway allowed West Glos to get within one goal, whilst our proper hockey crafted some half chances from pretty moves.
We made the game safe with a (rather dubious) short corner strike near the end.
All in all a slight underperformance from most players, apart from the outstanding Phil Foster.
Wanderers: (Poker’s pointers) Not a lot can be said really, We went 1-0 up after 3 minutes and then proceeded to click into frantic mode. The pitch made the ball bobble a lot and this was addressed in the team talk, however little attention was paid and we ended up paying the price in the form of 3 points. Good strike from Jake Graham to get us the goal, need to get back into the groove the team was in a few weeks ago as we have Clevedon away this week. COME ON BOYS!
Wizards: (Dunc’s report) Disappointing result against a Lydney team we could, and perhaps should, have beaten. Too often we played into their hands by dribbling the ball onto a defender's stick when a simple pass would have been much more effective. Sam Parker impressed on the right wing and thoroughly deserved his goal. That's 6 in the last three games for him now.
Warriors:  The Warriors came up against vastly superior opponents and were comprehensively beaten by the technical ability of a well organised W Glos Veteran’s side. In fact they were so superior, they were far better than the ‘C’ team they put our against the Wizards last week. In fact having demolished us, 4 of 5 of their players then proceeded to play for their ‘C’ team. It looks suspiciously as if their team selection is a little bit iffy. Brian Nichols won the man-of-the-match award on a day when most of us were only second best. Dominic Harris summed it up by saying we should learn from our mistakes and improve our basic skills in the next game.

Veterans:This was a big game for the Veterans, their first time in the Veterans Cup against a Hereford side that play together regularly and were semi-finalists in this competition in 2000 and 2001. Six of the Westbury line-up having turned out for the Warriors this season! Hereford even had an England Over 60s international in their side as well.

A big game for the Vets then, and some massive performances from the players. Hereford had the better of the possession in the first half with Martin Fey dominating at sweeper, belying the fact that he hasn’t played competitive hockey for some considerable time. Brian Nichols, Steve Alger and Austin Sheppard were a solid back three and kept shots at a minimum for stand in keeper Mike Harvey. Throughout the game Mike looked the part of keeper and drew praise from the opponents for saves he made in the second half.

Westbury’s best chances came on their break-a-ways. Chris Cocks worked the ball down the goal line after a decisive pass into the D from Dave Ratcliffe, to slide the ball between the goalkeeper’s feet for Martin Palmer to score from close range.

Hereford drew level two minutes into the second half. Shortly after the cheers went up for Austin Sheppard’s powerful strike from a short corner. Amazingly the umpire disallowed it for not being stopped outside the D, when clearly it had been the perfect stop and strike. To make matters worse Hereford went ahead from a corner where their number 11 encroached 5 yards into the D and was not blown up for it. A rebound fell to Hereford who went 2-1 up.

The midfield worked hard to get us back into the game. Dave Holliday, George Banting and Mark Crofts battled away valiantly. Andy Fox made a cameo appearance as a spare pair of legs when the midfield were getting tired.

An equaliser did come from a smart move by Chris Cocks and Steve Millman. Tufty’s square ball to the penalty spot must have bounced. Martin Palmer was there to slap it into the goal, but it caught a wicked top edge and flew high into the air. The arc of the ball taking it over the keeper and down under the crossbar for a freaky goal. (I later claimed it was a deliberate flick over the advancing keeper, but no-one would swallow that!)

With less than 10 minutes to go Hereford were awarded a penalty stroke that put them 3-2 ahead. Westbury’s attacking options were by now restricted to the occasional break. Tom Counsell, who had been rotating into the back line during earlier periods of the game, came back on in a wide position on the left with about 2 minutes to go. From near the side line on the 25 he spotted Steve Millman’s run towards the near post. He drove the ball into the D. Its direction would have taken it out of play hitting the outside of the goal. Tufty had timed his run to perfection. His stick caught the ball with a cleverly judged deflection back across the face of the stranded keeper into the goal at the far post, this brought a loud roar from all our supporters. This was a sensational goal to cap a hardworking display from Steve.

Hereford still had time to hit the post before full time was called.

The penalty stroke competition to decide who went through to the next round, saw Martin Palmer and Steve Millman score (despite both of them having missed their last strokes). Hereford kept scoring as well although Mike Harvey was desperately unlucky not to save two that he got a touch to. Mark Crofts also succeeded from the spot, but the remaining two strokes were unsuccessful. Hereford scored all theirs to win 4-3.

This was a fantastic game to play in, and every member of the 14 man squad deserves credit for their effort and commitment to secure a 3-3 draw. Good luck to Hereford in the next round, they played a sporting game and looked a well-organised team.

Match comments
Comment: After last week’s close call, the club recorded 6 out of 6 and Andy Griffin celebrated with the first of many Captain’s jug. That makes it 22 points out of a possible 24.
1st XI: The first team won by the odd goal in nine against Robinsons. Frosty continues to score prolifically but I don’t know much else about the game.
2nd XI: The second team took time off from their mud-wrestling to snatch a 3-2 win against  Swansea Bay. Swansea twice equalised to get back in the game but each time the twos scored within a few minutes to regain the lead. The last ten minutes were played one short following a yellow card for a technical offence. The seconds did make things hard for themselves by poor distribution from the back in the closing minutes. Slider seems to have been giving master classes in sliding tackles, but the majority of them from variety of players were blown up as an offence. Perhaps staying on two feet to defend might be the better option!
3rd XI: The thirds are on a scoring binge knocking in another 7 to make it 39 for the season. Gavin Clifton was on target 4 times along with Sparky and the Taylor twins (Tonka and Matt!!!)

Wanderers: The Wanderers were pushed all the way by the Bristol University side they played and won by a narrow 2-1 margin. The importance of this victory was shown on the final whistle with yells of “Yesss” from several Wanderers as a collective sigh of relief.  The team worked very hard for each other and came close to scoring to make the game safe during their best spell of the game in the closing quarter.

Wizards: The Wizards lost Will Enderby in the first half to a nasty hand injury against West Glos, but they turned in a solid performance in the first Westbury v W Glos derby of the season and ran out winners by 3-0.
Warriors: The Warriors were 5-0 up at half time mainly due to three individual goals by Sam Parker from telling passes from the midfield. The team took their ‘foot off the gas’ in the second half and allowed North Somerset more space in midfield. Gareth Nichols won the man of the match, but the star of the game was the young N Somerset keeper who prevented Dominic Harris from scoring at least 5 goals in the game.

Match comments
Comment: Club Captain Andy Griffin had the money, in his wallet in his back pocket, in anticipation of an open league day ‘Club Captain’s Jug’. Andy was disappointed that we got so close yet did not quite come away with 6 of the best. However, 16 points out of a possible 18 on the opening day is still a reason to celebrate, especially with the Warriors notching up a win on their league debut. Andy wiil obviously keep his money ‘on ice’…it will happen soon!
1st XI: The first team worked hard to overcome a well-organised Bath Buccs side. The scorers look very familiar -  expect to see a hat full of goals again this year. With the start the first team have had this season, there is no reason why they shouldn’t come out top of the pile.
2nd XI: The seconds had the hardest task of the day and snatched a well earned win against Cheltenham. A JJ double was sufficient to take all three points.
3rd XI: The thirds have hit a winning streak after a few lean years, getting the better of Lansdown. Gavin Clifton being the third player to score a hat-trick for them this season.
Wanderers: Tufty reported that the Wanderers could have sewn their match up a lot earlier at Weston. Leading 1-0 at the half, the Wanderers allowed Weston to stay in the game with a second half equaliser, then let them pull it back to 3-2, before 3 late goals sealed the win. Geoff Rickard made his personal tally one goal in each of the 4 games he has played so far. A feature of the match was the excellent umpiring by the Weston umpires. Tufty felt that their control of the match and the decisions they made was excellent.

Wizards: The only blip on the day was the difficulty the Wizards had in taking all the points against North Bristol. Tim Denner felt that the opposition had more of the play. TC senior agreed and the Wizards were somewhat fortunate to share the points. Pete Murphy followed up his outstanding form during the summer league with another excellent display between the sticks.

Warriors: …And so to the Warriors first game. Sam Parker had the distinction of scoring the first Warriors league goal (although my earlier effort, which I clearly touched (Pete Thomas will vouch for me) was not seen by the umpire who gave a sixteen!) The Warriors grew stronger as the game progressed, leading 3-0 by half time. The quality of the passing and the movement to support the player with the ball was brilliant. North Bristol had no answer to the slick hockey we played. Steve Leighton was surprised we only scored 5 goals. Our dominance of the game made the winning margin seem even bigger. Sam Parker was man-of-the-match on a day when everyone was outstanding.
