Rule 1: Don't do anything else and miss club day, the weather is always glorious! Rule 2: Why not take your holidays when club day is on you are guaranteed a suntan! Rule 3: Don't go on holiday - see rule 1. Yes it was another scorcher for club day as the event was once again brilliantly supported by the men in red & green and ladies in and red & black.
In pool 2 Mrs & Mrs Armsby said it wasn't a goal fest, but there was a lot of good hockey played by four teams who were evenly matched. Both were full of praise for the goal keepers Mssrs Hicks and Eland for the men and Ms Palmer for the ladies playing in her first club day excelling as a representative of Westberries. Team 7 were bottom of the pool with 2 draws and one defeat. Jordan Pardington's goal earned a point against Team 6. They also drew 1-1 against Team 8, but went down 2-1 to Team 5, with Phil Cockram getting a consolation goal. Also on 2 points but a better goal difference was Team 8 who earned two draws, 2-2 v Team 5 and 1-1 against Team 7. Joe Thomas was on target twice in the first game and Penny was the scorer in the second. Their one defeat was by 3-2 to Team 7 with Richard Beesley and Struan Wilkins being the scorers. It was tight at the top of the pool as well with the place in the final decided by a goal difference tie break decision, as both Teams 5 and 6 had 5 points each. The runners up were Team 6. Joe Thomas showed his predatory instincts despite his impending rest to get his leg right with two goals and Mary Page added the third in their 3-2 win over Team 8. Joe scored in the 1-1 draw with Team 7 and they fought out a goalless draw with Team 5. The top team in the pool turned out to be Team 5. Their 2-1 win v Team 7 came when Alex Webber and Gary Roper set each other with a goal each. Gary scored twice in the 2-2 draw with Team 8, whilst Team 6 held them to a goalless draw. Pool 1: There were slightly less goals in pool 1, but there was a big difference between the experience in the team,s but lots of effort put in by all four sides to make it an entertaining pool. The opening game saw a strong Team 1 stamp their authority on the game with an emphatic 3-0 win over Team 2. Max Longden at 17 was given the responsibility of being Team 2's play maker and nearly opened the scoring. Team 1 were kept at bay by great saves by Ed West, but all that was undone when a defender's 'hospital pass' gifted Chris Cutts the ball on the penalty spot for him to pick his spot to flick in. Steve Millman flicked in number two and Doug Ward struck the third. Teams 3 and 4 played an end to end game but neither side could get the ball between the posts, the nearest was a Justin Chave shot that came back off the post. Teams 1 and 3 were next up and Team 3 opened the scoring. Umpire Chris Cocks played a great advantage, as he could have awarded a short corner but allowed Dave Wornell to reach the dead ball line and whip in a thumping cross for Alex Yuill to turn in at the back post. Team 1 showed their strength as Will Holmes, who looked a class player all day scored two well worked goals to give Team 1 a comeback 2-1 win.. Team 4 played well to earn a 2-0 win against Team 2. Justin Chave rounded off one attack with a well take goal. The second goal was probably the best of the day. Neil Richardson went on one of his trademark wobbles from just inside the half way line, left - right,t past just about everybody in Team 2 finishing with a simple push past the keeper. A brilliant individual goal that earned a high five from one of his opponents. The comedy moment of the game came when Nathan Walkey was stick tackled by his own player, but in the crowded D the umpire thought it was a defensive clatter of sticks and gave a short corner, much to the surprise of the Team 4 defense. Team 3 against Team 2 saw Paul Mason's precise shot find the net. Team 2 then managed to put their best spell of the day together and fine skills by Max Longden enabled Martin Palmer to tap in an equaliser to make it 1-1. In the last pool game Team 4 needed to win and Team 1 a draw to make the final. Steve Millman scored at the back post after a great cross from the right. Steve's second goal showed how the master of control was able to make time and space in a crowded D to flick in an excellent goal. Close to the end Steve Puetz celebrated the arrival of his baby daughter with a good strike for Team 4.7th & 8th place final: Team 2 v 7. Team 7 had the class and control of Armsby, Ludley and Cockram and Watts, but they couldn't find a way to get past a defense masterminded by Mark Crofts, Chris Cocks and Paul Croker. Harry Jepson had the best chance for Team 7 and Nathan Walkey saw his best effort of the day tipped over the crossbar by Pete Murphy. The game finished 0-0 and in Nathan's words neither side had the 'wooden spoon' as they both finished 7th!5th & 6th place final. This was a high scoring game on the original sand pitch. Pete Ratcliffe was on target witha hat-trick as Team 3 won 4-2. Hugh Woodward and Struan Wilkins scored for Team 6.3rd & 4th place final. Joe Thomas opened the scoring for Team 6 as they opened strongly in the bronze medal match. The game turned on a fantastic Chris Butt goal. Chris was top of the D, left hand side and struck a superb reverse stick shot to find the far corner of the goal. Neil Richardson capped a fine day of skill and running (does he ever get tired) with the winning goal.
The Final. Some of the recent finals have been games contested by tired players, but this one was a classic. Steve Millman scored his 5th goal of the day to give Team 1 the lead. They had all the pedigree of a winning side. However, the popular support was with Team 5, who as a younger less experienced side put in a great team performance to turn the game around. Gary Roper equalised after a goal mouth melee. The game was end to end with saves from Martin Hicks and Pete Murphy at each end of the pitch. If you were to write the script for how this game would finish you couldn't write it any better than it happened. A Team 5 attack saw the ball moved left and Michelle Smith was there to meet the ball on the volley in the middle of her stick and find the net half way up the goal just inside the post. A memorable goal to win the game for her team. The high fives showed the appreciation of her skill in scoring. There was barely more than a minute left and Team 5 won the day to complete yet another highly successful club day. The winning team was: Murphy, Roper, Geddes, Andrews, Glorney, Banting G, Aitchison, Webber, Taylor, Smith, Iles.
Thanks go to Dave Wornell for organising another excellent day. Special mentions should go to the five goalkeepers who must have lost a stone in weight between them on a hot day as they excelled themselves with their goal keeping skills. Duncan Armsby made his long awaited comeback after his awful injury, his first action since September. The standard of play and the competitive nature of the games was a testament to the commitment of everyone to play proper hockey. A number of young players were involved in the day Parry, Jepson, Pardington, Lawrence and Webber who all showed the progress they have made since entering adult hockey. Thanks go to everyone who umpired and it was encouraging to see younger members like Will Holmes and Max Longden blowing the whistle. Max had to make a crucial decision to disallow a short corner goal that had been worked around the D but didn't hit the backboard as it was still the first shot. The next similar event will be 2nd club 7s in September. |

3rd XI
: It all started like a competition to see who could present the opponents with the best comedy goal. It finished with some well worked goals by both sides. A 7-3 win rounded off the season. Nathan Walkey's two goals took him to 30 for the season. James Pearce-Smith scored twice his first coming from a dreadful defensive pass from Mendip. Matt Taylor scored after good work from Pete Ratcliffe. Steve Millman and Steve Puetz completed the scoring. |
Masters: O Bristolians arrived with a squad of 16 and were good value for their 3-0 lead mid way through the first half. Chris Cocks asked me what was' plan B' as he was clearly worried that a heavy defeat could be on the way and what was our strategy for damage limitation. It turned ot that Chris was in fact 'plan B'. Westbury upped their play after O B's domination of the first 25 minutes. A series of short corners saw Chris Cocks injecting. The ball went to the right of the D and Martin Palmer returned the ball to the back post where Chris expertly flicked in. Minutes later Austin Shepard's short corner shot came back off the pads to James Pope. James shot and the ball ran off the pads to Chris Cocks to tuck in. James Pope was caausing mayhem down the right during the first half and Alan Sparks and John Ludley were instrumental in moving the ball forward. The second half saw Brian Callis leave the game with a painful knee. Westbury changed their shape to a midfield diamond with Steve Millman coming on. There was still a lot of pressure to absorb from O Bs, but Mike Harvey in goal, Adrain Napper at sweeper (playing his first vets game), Chrius Cocks, Ernie Wise and Austin Sheppard dealt with everything thrown at them. Westbury played with a lot of belief in themselves, despite having only 4 of their first choice vets on duty. There was increased pressure as Sparks, Ludley and Millman were now calling the shots. Another great run by James Pope down the right a slipped square pass, a layoff by Martin Palmer and up from full back was Chris Cocks running across the face of the goal from right to left. His first touch was brilliant as he moved past the keeper and reverse sticked the ball in the goal - a quality finish. There was more to come! A short corner went to Steve Millman. Steve twisted and turned past defenders and keeper and flicked in the winning goal into the top corner. Well done to everyone who played at the top of their games. Team: Harvey, Napper, Cocks, Wise, Callis, Sheppard, Ludley, Sparks, Pope, Millman S, Palmer, Thomas P. |
There was also a very competative intra-club game. The red and greens of Ben Tucker had more of the attacking play but it was Si Andrews who scored for Dave Wornell's whites from a great pass by Pete Ratcliffe. There was more of the same in the second half. A short corner ran to Dave Wornell and his second shot was drilled in from a distance. 2-0 to the whites. Ben Tucker reduced the arrears from a short corner for the red and greens. Zeyn Mulla was looking sharp and his touch was the last as the ball trickled in to make it 3-1 to the whites. Ben Tucker struck another late short corner just before the final whistle. This was a good opportunity for a number of the club's promising youngsters to play alongside players from the upper end of the club. David Parry looked composed, Alex Maydew worked hard, Ben Herman played with a lot more confidence and those that have graduated to the top of the club lioke Max Longden and Dave Dineley showed what their younger club mates can aspire to with age and experience. |

1st XI: The firsts created a couple of chances but couldn't convert them whereas Bristol UWE had a lot of possession and turned it into a 3-0 win. |
2nd XI
: Great weather, great pitch….and a great game…... After a ridiculously short amount of pitch time before push-back, we started the first half surprisingly well. We hassled and chased down every ball, we looked solid in the challenge; we held our shape well and had better possession and territory than UWE for the first 20mins, so it was frustrating to leak a goal against this run of play via a UWE short-corner (drag-flick to the upper right). The heads didn’t go down however, we just carried on as before, with TC, Dineley, Frost, Webb and Harris all doing their level best to both disrupt the UWE backline and work hard to be available for our own attacking play, it was Harris (with a classic right-wing dash) that gave us our first short-corner….with the skipper duly agreeing to Masons request of ‘put it well and truly in the kennel please Ben’….1-1…. The rest of the first half seemed to go in double quick-time, with some great phases of play from both sides, if there was anything to debate it would probably have been that we gave the UWE forwards a bit too much respect and allowed their midfield to roam into space a bit too often, but with the clock ticking down towards half-time Barnes converted his first for Westbury this season with an acute shot from wide left of the goal to take us into the half-time breather.... We had ruled the roost in the first half, but the second 35mins was a different story altogether, UWE stepped up their game and forced us onto the back foot big-time. The pace of the game was relentless, fitness began to tell, and our lack of thought to transfer the ball and retain possession hurt us. Even so, UWE had to work very, very hard to break us down, and if memory serves me correctly, even though we gave them a few too many long-ball opportunities they never really troubled our goal from open-play perspective, but after long phases without possession - short-corners are almost inevitable - and they converted a couple to take the score to 3-2. The last 10 minutes is a blur, the energy levels were fast approaching zero but the team committed themselves and gave it absolutely everything, and some hard work in UWE’s half created an open-play move culminating in a Barnes half-volley into the roof of the UWE goal – 3-3. The whistle blew on a great game, and even though we had to fight back from a goal down - boy did it feel frustrating not to have won, after some reflection, on the first half performance alone - I really believe we should have taken this game. For those that are not in the know, the situation for us is this, we have to finish at or above 9th place to stay in North Division 2 for next season – and I think everyone understands just how important this is for Westbury HC. We are lying 10th on 22 points at present, with Devizes on 23 points and Bristol University B (our remaining game) on 24 points – so this Saturday it is a genuine ‘must-win’ game to be sure of completing the objective. I sincerely hope and ask for massive amounts of support…..the adrenalin will be flowing...and I am sure it will be a belter of a match! |
3rd XI
: Liam Glorney reports: The Westbury team arrived in good time at Firebrands' pitch ready to carry out their meticulous preparation prior to a eagerly anticipated game. We arrived at 4pm for a 5pm game but most of the team spent about 50 mins sitting on the bench putting the world to rights wondering if Firebrands would actually bother to turn up. 10 mins prior to push back there appeared to be a vaguely assembled Firebrands team consisting of about 9. Time to warm up... The game started with 11 vs 9 in our favour which we took advantage of fairly early in the match. After involving about 5/6 players in the build up Chris Mulloy strode forward to finish calmly and accurately from a couple of yards inside the D. Perhaps we thought it was going to be plain-sailing after this as we then seemed to continue to take advantage of the extra space, created by a lack of 2 Firebrands opponents, yet failed to turn this possession into anything particularly potent when approaching the D. There was some dogged defending from Firebrands when we created some scrappy sort of shots at goal but we didn't quite get it right. After about 15 mins Firebrands seemed to up their game slightly and created their goal about 25 mins into the game from their first meaningful attack, largely created by their captain. He held up the ball well on the left hand side and put a reverse stick cross in which was deflected in by one of their forwards. This was, from memory, their only shot on target throughout the first half. Bugger. This gave us a small kick up the arse though.... About 5/10 mins before half time we started to create a few more, slightly meaningful, chances and the stealth, guile and alertness of one Matty Taylor converted a chance from about 5 yds out approximately 33 degrees angle from the right hand post. Matt thought it was an absolutely stunning goal and was trying to inform everyone he knew about this afterwards on his futuristic mobile phone. It was alright... Half time came and Steve rightly made us aware that we were not quite at our best. We needed to put up a better fight in the 2nd half to stand any chance of holding on to our narrow lead. We improved a little overall, making better use of the width and more runs into space. We pieced some good moves together, using the pivot well on numerous occasions but as soon as we got into the D there was, on average, 6 or 7 Westbury players who all seemed to want to score. We were perhaps guilty of going for goal when there were people in better positions with more space and more clear cut opportunities. Further to this the Firebrands keeper was in good form blocking anything on the floor with relative ease. Despite overloading the D and a few short corners in the 2nd half we couldn't add to the 2 we scored in the first half. The work rate of the team was better in the 2nd half. Despite Firebrands fielding a 10th player in the 2nd half thus creating more opportunites our defence remained resolute and the stalwarts contained most threats presented to us. When the occasional ball did beat our defence Andy Pound was on full alert and kept out any sniff of a chance from Firebrands. Andy was a lot busier in the 2nd half and did the necessaries well. As the game entered it's climax (although there wasn't really much of one) we pressed the opponents back and pushed for a third goal which would have finished them off. We couldn't quite manage it but were able to keep the ball in their half for the final 5/6 minutes. This was enough and we held out for a narrow win. Not a vintage display by any means. The 3s were not at their swashbuckling best (had to get that word in) but team spirit and some much harder work in the 2nd half was worth it in the end.
7 points from last 3 games. 2 games to go. Keep it up 3s... |
Wanderers: Yes the Wanderers lost by 8-2, but they did lead 2-1 at one stage thanks to goals from Hugh Woodward and Si Andrews. Firebrands reached the break with a two goal advantage. In the second half the visitors showed a lot of great skills and scored four more goals. The Wanderers finished strongly and Pete Farrell drew a good save from the Brand's keeper. Both sides played good hockey and the Wanderers can take crediot from the way they contested the game. |
Wizards: Alan Sparks writes: The Wizards went from a youth oriented team to one largely of experineced players for the away trip to Yate (although we still had 3 school kids). Yate had a very good home record and the pitch and sun proved to be potential issues throughout the day. However the surface was very similar to our lower pitch so we had some experience with the bouncing ball. The styles of play were very different, Yate relied on strikes up the middle whilst the Wizards were moving the ball very effectively through and across midfield. We welcomed Phil Clear who had an excellent game at left midfield and scored the first goal. Nick Coates scored the second coming up late on the blindside from a free hit outside the D and crisply scoring off the near post. A couple of other good moves were not converted. 2-0 at half time and into the sun. Yate came out very keen and applied a lot of pressure. They managed a goal and the game looked like becoming tense before Zeyn Mulla and Tom Taylor took over. Zeyn had a great second half, able to create huge amounts of danger. Elsewhere we continued to be able to switch the ball around. Tom Taylor was able to convert short corners as the post was left uncovered, 2 from those plus converting a simple chance after a great run from Zeyn. Dave Wornell had the other goal, after a long period of possession opened up a gap for a hard 45 degree ball from the left and a nice deflection. So 6-1 win (Taylor T 3, Coates, Clear, Wornell) After having seen North Somerset and Firebrands our points target was 35, now need one more win for 40+ points |
Warriors: Credit must go a brave Yate team who turned up short handed, but prepared to give it a go. However, they found the the Warriors with a strong midfield of Pope, Millman and Spencer who called all the shots as the Warriors pushed forward with some great attacking moves. Alex Chatburn, despite a tight hamstring was lively down the right and created the opening for the first goal. A short corner switch with Steve Millman made it 2-0 and Alex and James Pope combined to split the visiting defence. The recipient of all three moves was Martin Palmer who scored a hat-trick inside a 10 minute spell, his first and third goal being scuffed in. Graham Aitchison and Alex Chatburn were the providers of the move for goal number four, with James Pope reaching out, collecting the ball just outside the post to tap in. A plucky Yate side had their moments and scored from a short corner. Alex and James were dynamic down the right and goal number five was guided in by Duncan Ogilvie. The second half saw more action at both ends of the pitch. Alex Chatburn created yet another goal which Martin Palmer jabbed in from close range. Yate pushed up and found a defender's foot on the line and scored from the resulting penalty stroke. James Pope found the net for a second time and Steve Millman scored the pick of the goals with his flick from a short corner. The game was played in excellent spirit and provided an afternoon of enjoyable exercise for both teams despite the large score line. |
Widgets: The Widgets made the relatively long trip to Midsomer Norton, but they made it a highly successful day winning 8-1. Justin Chave scored a hat-trick, Alex Webber got two, Tom Nash scored his first goal for the club and Geoff Rickard and Tom Ash completed the scoring. |

:Matt Taylor writes: We were hosting Fry's at Home this weekend and after the excellent Game the weekend before against UWE we were all up for it and had a couple of new faces to add to the 3rd team squad with the much talked about Liam Glorney and Chris Mulloy both of which fitted in very well and didn't disappoint!
We started a little slow but saying that still managed to move the ball around really well in places and when we used the wings we really threatened their defence. They were pressing as well and managed to gain a short corner and took it well which put us one goal down. Still with our heads held high we plugged on in true 3rds fashion and managed to win our own short corner. I should say since Tom Taylor has left, through injury, we have been struggling a bit to convert, that was until our top scorer and MVP Nathan Walkey stepped up to the plate and hit it so sweet it left the defence with the ringing sound of the backboard as it flew into the goal. So the first half down it was one a piece even after I tried to gift them a goal trying to do a cricket shot clearance and leaving a two on one with Andy Pound ...which of course was no match! The second half we started how we left off and seemed to have higher spirits and played the ball around like we know we can and created a few more chances. Eventually that payed off with another short corner and again Nathan Walkey stepped up to the plate and hit it just as sweetly as the first but this time Steve Puetz was running in with his stick firmly on the ground and flicked it into the goal 2-1. Fry's then pressed on and caught us off guard and had a free shot at the top of the D which made it 2-2. We attacked back though and I thought Alex Yuill was going to score a corker but to everyones amazement it ended up smashing a green house to pieces instead! With a new ball we started again and kept attacking and then Liam almost scored on his first outing with us but missed by inches to the relief of their goal keeper who was left staring at it as it brushed just passed the post..We then won another short corner and again Nathan stepped up, hit it and it came back to him of the keepers pads and as cool as a cucumber Nathan flicked it into the top left corner. 3-2. Again, not happy with being a goal up we decided to let them have another goal just to keep the crowd on their feet. 3-3. With the clock ticking we pressed even harder and stepped the effort up ten fold with everybody tryng their hardest and not giving up and we won another short corner. Feeling pretty confident Nathan once again stepped up and made it a hat-trick for I think the second time of the season...4-3 and even after Fry's still trying to score they couldn't get passed. It was such a solid performance for majority of the time and one we should all be proud of... But I think what won us that game was playing for one enother and work rate on and off the ball which when done properly we can beat any team in that League...A huge well done to all of you and a very big thank you to Penny and Ger for umpiring for us and all of the supporters.. With the season nearing a close lets play every game with that same work rate and effort and finish on a real high... |
Wanderers: James Holliday reports: Golden Hill was an appropriate name for the South Glos pitch on Saturday. The sun was shining and the pitch must have a family of moles residing under the pitch. Apart from the bumpy pitch, the hockey against South Glos was good…. Actually it was really good! The team this week had a few changes due the availability issues higher up the club, but all the players stood up to the mark. Mention must go to the young lads of Josh Wanklyn and Ned Holmes who played some great hockey. As a team, we played the better hockey on the day and tried to keep it simple by playing short passes and working for eachother and really wanting the ball. We played good consistent hockey this week and almost always had an outlet for the ball. We also earned more short-corners this week which was good as we haven’t always been able to manufacture this on game day.
The final result was a 2-1 win to the Wanderers. First goal came from a corner. Ball passed out of the 25 then smacked in to James Hayne who passed to Wanklyn. For a young lad…. He smashed it home and it was a great way to open the Wanderers' goal scoring account. He also assisted the 2nd goal that Moon finished in his own special way. Jarvis also assisted this week when he dived at full stretch and swept the ball from the attackers stick and didn’t leapfrog the ball like the week before!
In summary it was a great day, a great win and a great team playing great hockey. |
Wizards: Alan Sparks Writes: Not Hogwarts but the side the Wizards had these week had an interesting blend of youth and experience. They were playing against an OB's side with a lot of enthusiastic running. However the Wizards passing game across the width of the field just prevailed, with the good moves outweighing the times they broke down. Each side had a few short corners but the keepers were up to the task; however in open play the Wizards had the edge. In the second half Zeyn was very effective on the break, creating a superb chance that just eluded Alex Chatburn's stick and a great move through the youngsters down the right saw Harry's shot crash into the sideboard just wide. Early on there was a single, ultimately decisive, goal that even the scorer (Nick Coates) is a bit bashful about |
Warriors: Playing against the league leaders, Bristol & West, the Warriors were always in for a tough afternoon. It was welcome back Ernie Wise from the Falkland Islands and his strength was needed at the back. James Pope had his first run out for a month and was full of good attacking moves and unlucky not to get two goals. Toby Whitehead was our best player on the day and got through a prodigous amount of work. For the record B&W led 4-0 at half time, but we opened the second half strongly and deserved a well worked goal which Duncan Ogilvie swept in at the back post after good work by Toby and James. The final score was 6-1, but the 11 players on duty stuck to their task and kept the prospective champions to a much lower score line than might have been expected. |
Widgets: Andy Griffin reports: The Widgets came up against a very strong North Somerset team who were riding high at the top of the league table. North Somerset used their experience and dominated the middle of the first half scoring 3 goals in 10 minutes going in at half time 4-1 up. Some good saves by Mike Harvey kept the score down. The second half was a totally different game where North Somerset were outplayed by the Widgets winning the half 3-1. Goals from Andy Griffion and Dave Parry made the last 10 minutes very tense and North Somerset just hung on ! The second halve saw some excellent team work with plenty of commitment. A good game and great second half performance against a strong experienced North Somerset team.

1st XI: Andy Krebs reports: Getting off to the best of starts was an omen for this game. Neil Richardson's superb control deep on the left wing fired the ball across to Max Longdenwho found an open goal in front and drove well from the top of the D putting Westbury 1 up within 1 minute. Clearly the better team, Westbury got another goal in the first half but 2 well taken short corners undid the good work and the half time score was 2-2. Some superb hockey by Westbury in the first half dominating the game somewhat and the only real chances for Whitchurch coming from their short corners. The second half was the same in scope. Westbury the better team, Max with another goal, Hancock with the 4th making it 4-2. Two sleepy moments from various parts of the team ensured that Whitchurch got back into the game and the final score was 4-4. Terribly disappointing for all in the score, but a lot of good came from how we played. Encouraging times. Another 2nd team player "stepped up" into the first team this weekend and looked for all the measure, a first team player. Cockram played well in midfield and defence latterly. This club has more strength in depth than perhaps it realises.
Things to take from the game.
1. We can score well when we work the ball quickly.
2. We are better than almost any team in the league.
3. At times.
4. We must, to a man, retain focus for 70 minutes. Slight lapses cost goals. Especially at the back and in goal.
5. The youth of the team are getting better and better.
6. Consistency is key.
7. We play very well as a team.
8. We must know when to shut up shop and see a lead through to the end of the game.
All good encouraging signs for the team going forward. We have a crunch game next weekend against Truro in Truro. We can ensure our security with a win there. If we lose, we will find ourselves in a rather sticky situation. |
2nd XI
: Paul Mason writes: Westbury could be forgiven for expecting to cause Cardiff Medics (5th in the table) all sorts of problems, when we yet again travelled along the M4!!! Belief and spirit is alive and kicking in the team as we started the game with ‘steel’ that has become synonymous with the troops. Early attacking momentum was with the home-side, but as Westbury stuck to their task the Medics were unable to penetrate and Westbury too looked dangerous when in the opponents 3rd and resilient in defence! The first goal came from an unfortunate turnover, which I now name the ‘Village pass’ - for those old enough to remember. Westbury on par with possession and edging the chances, but a goal down. Cardiff followed up with a 2nd goal, converted from a short. At this stage Cardiff were breaking well, but never really managed to counter-punch with any authority. The 'tide' was starting to turn with Westbury creating more and more, going into half-time. A constructive half-time saw Westbury out the ‘blocks’ with vigour and momentum. Our movement going forward was superb coupled with a willingness to defend in numbers. Yet another Westbury short-corner saw routine; tango/beta/blue 24a neatly ‘scooped’ into the gapping upper section of the Medics goal. Westbury skipped with tails aloft back for the restart when to our astonishment Cardiff were breaking from their 16 hit and within ten seconds had scored!!! All credit to the umpires for listening/conferring and to us for calmly refusing to play on and ordering a stewards enquiry. The jury decided that the alleged high ‘hit’ from Mace was indeed a ‘scoop’ – they must have checked the archives from the last decade and realised I never, ever, ever hit the ball in the ‘D’. 2-1 Medics – we applied the squeeze – Medics scored from a short corner again! – we pressed again, never giving up on a game we deserved to get something from – Tom Colquhoun rolled a ball reverse style at 0000.2 MPH after a self-styled zig-zag in the ‘D’ 3-2 Medics – we charged again………. - Redemption beckoned as Richard Beesley in the dying embers stepped up for a short corner, as the final whistle went. Now, at this point I should have said something closer to ‘give it a tw** Bees, however as the keeper was doing an impression of a Swiss roll on every short, I said ‘ Drag flick it Bees’ He did, but his looped dam buster was not quite the outcome we had hoped. Suffice to say that was probably not the best call, but at least he did what he was told
Things we learnt:
1) Trying hard as a team should not be confused with trying hard to do it on your own.
2) We are far more successful a team when we move the ball early and get our heads up in the ‘D’.
3) We have only lost by one goal to two teams in the top five and beaten or drawn with the other 3!
9 points from the next three games is a realistic target with the form we’re in. We've played better in recent weeks, but we have set a high bar for ourselves - Devizes at home next week in a crunch encounter - all support greatly appreciated. Final score Cardiff Hospice (Medics) 3 Westbury 2 |
3rd XI
: Kento reports: Despite Bristol UWE's B side doing their best to confound a Westbury side with confusing car park directions, the squad came through with not only a full team but also two subs to boot. Andy Pound, with a glint in his eye, even told of his son's heroics in goal earlier in the day, keeping a clean sheet to help his school side to victory. This omen, or perhaps the subs or the team talk, seemed to improve Westbury's confidence as they started brightly, stringing passes together the likes of which hadn't been seen in weeks. This early pressure went unrewarded however and UWE started to get back into the match, eventually forcing a short corner that was duly dispatched. Westbury, not to be outdone, got a goal back through a short corner of their own before half time. The score remained 1-1 until the interval, with Westbury lucky to escape when one UWE striker, perhaps a little over-enthusiastically, missed the ball from all of a foot from the goal before kicking it in. He may have fooled himself, but he certainly didn't fool the Westbury defence. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Westbury's self-belief evident in the amount of pressure applied to the UWE defence. They held firm however, long enough for a swift counter-attack to restore UWE's lead. Once again, Westbury struck back from a short corner, even finding it within themselves to spurn a glorious chance of their own with the ball drifting across the opposition goal. Some late pressure and nervy moments at the back certainly helped keep the spectators on their toes, but the final 2-2 scoreline was richly deserved and a huge boost after a run of poor results.

Wanderers: James Holliday writes: The Wanderers were playing the team that is one place above us in the league. We weren't expecting an easy game as they beat our thirds the week before. They didn't give us any time on the ball and when we attacked they always had numbers behind the ball. At times we played great hockey going up the pitch but couldn’t get the goals that we deserved. Unfortunately the Wanderers lost 2-1. I think Rickard got the last touch on the ball for our goal before their defender slotted it past their keeper! Its been a really tough, hard season and OB's B's have gained 6 points in the last 2 weeks against Westbury meaning they are on 18 points and we are on 10 with 9 points left on offer! If you have played for the Wanderers or supported the Wanderers on the sideline, then can I say a big thank you for the effort and fun we have had on the hockey pitch this season, even when everything has gone against us. Please put a date in your diary and have a beer or two or three on Saturday 26th March to celebrate being part of.... or just knowing the Wanderers. |
Wizards: |
Warriors: Duncan Ogilvie reports: My memory of the game is already a bit of a blur (can't think why - but thanks to everyone that organised last night's Club social) so this report will be short and sweet.... Two reaonably balanced teams. The welcome return of Tom Taylor. A promising start. Our keeper skillfully deflecting a shot that was going wide into his own net. One nil down. Half time. Short corner to us. Of all the goals Pete Thomas has ever scored, well this was one of them. Game on. Alex Webber impresing in a forward position with his running and skill. Oh we've conceded again. Game over. Keep Calm and Carry On. |
Widgets: Andy Griffin writes Away against Firebrands2- 0 Wigets - Goal scorers Harry Jepson and Andy GriffinAn excellent team performance against an experienced Firebrands team played in an great spirit by both sides and well umpired. The main difference between the team was the pace of our youth players, Harry Jepson, Dom Andrews, Tom Nash and Pete Ratcliffe. Dom marked a tricky attacker out of the game and the guys up front, harry, Tom and Pete ran great lines all afternoon which opened up the play. Westbury went one nil up mid way through the first half following excellent work by Tom which was finished by Harry. Both Goalkeepers pulled off saves which meant the second half was quite a tense affair. It was good to see Nick Coates coming back from Injury. The game was settled with 5 minutes to go by a goal from Andy Griffin following a short corner. A great team performance.
