The
10th annual club day was blessed with the first warm day for many
months and everyone went home tanned and exhausted after the best
ever turn out by Westbury and Westberries players. With slightly
shorter games to accommodate 10 teams for the first time, goals
were at a premium. The event opened with Pete Farrel presenting
the award for Badger's top scorer to Zeyn Mulla and Badger's player
of the year to David Parry. Just before the final Club Captain Chris
Poulsom presented Ed Minchin with the Young Player of the Year trophy.
In pool 1 on the
sand Team 1 was the 'Captains' team. They earned a 1-0 win against
Team 5 with a goal from Duncan Ogilvie, but lost 2-0 to Team 4.
Their two remaining games were drawn 0-0 giving them 5 points and
a place in the 7th and 8th play-off. Team 2 also played in three
goal less draws. Their high spot came when the goalkeepers were
rested and they knocked in three goals against Team 5 who replied
with one of their own. Ben Lipfriend cleverly jinked his way around
defenders to claim two of them. Chris Tomlinson, having injected
a short corner, picked up the ball when it ran loose to him and
worked his way past a couple of defenders to slip the ball in. Team
2 finished unbeaten on 6 points to go forward to contest the 3rd
and 4th place final. Team 3 had an identical record to Team 2, with
three 0-0 draws, whilst their win was by 1-0 against Team 4 when
Peter Ratcliffe netted. They qualified for the 5th and 6th place
final. Team 4 were the winners of pool 1. They won 2-0 against Team
1 with Terry Watts and Penny on target, 1-0 verses Team 5 when Richard
Beesley notched the only goal. Bees was carrying a sore foot from
stopping the ball on the sideline in the very first game, forgetting
he was only wearing his flip-flops and not heavy duty Doc Martins!
A 0-0 draw with Team 3 meant that despite losing 1-0 to Team 3 they
had sufficient points to reach the final. Team 5 earned a 0-0 draw
with Team 3, and despite having an equal part of the game against
Team 2 they finished losing 3-1. Their matches against Teams 1 and
4 ended in single goal defeats. Pete Murphy and Jon Jarvis shared
the goal keeping duty on the sand and the paucity of goals was down
to their goal keeping skills with many fine saves made and a few
pounds of weight shed during the course of the day.
Pool 2 on the water
Team 6 had a mixed bag of results. Ed Minchin scored when he poached
the only goal of the game from a goalmouth scramble in the 1-0 win
v Team 8. Owen Kemp struck from the edge of the D to equalise verses
Team 7 in a 1-1 draw. They also shared the points with Team 10 in
a 0-0 draw, but fell to a solitary goal in the match with Team 9.
Their 5 points qualified them for the 7th and 8th place final, but
had they avoided defeat against Team 9 they would have made the
final, a reflection of how close this pool was in terms of results.
Team 7 drew three of their games. 1-1 v Team 6 when Phil Cockram
scored a follow up from a short corner, flicking the ball in at
the right hand post after worming his way past several defenders.
They fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Team 8 to finish with
three points and a place in the 9th and 10th play-off. Team 8 won
the pool with two wins, a draw and a defeat. A 2-0 win v Team 7
came courtesy of goals from Terry Watts and Penny., They earned
a 1-0 win in the deciding game in the pool against Team 10. A short
corner strike from Michelle Jacobs deciding the issue. They drew
0-0 with Team 9 and lost 1-0 to Team 6 and had a total of 7 points
to top the pool. Team 9 lost their opening game verses Team 10 with
Max Longden getting a late goal in a 2-1 loss. A 1-1 draw with Team
7 thanks to a Chris Cutts tap in and a 0-0 draw with Team 8 was
followed by a late goal from Justin Chave who volleyed in at the
back post a team mate's looping shot. They reached the 3rd and 4th
place final with 5 points. Team 10 opened with a 2-1 win against
Team 9. Gary Roper scored a break-away goal and Sarah Griffiths
hit a short corner, a sort of 'bouncing bomb' that cleverly deceived
the defenders on the line. Then came two 0-0 draws against Teams
7 and 8. Their final game needed just a draw to get to the final.
This close pool finished with them losing 1-0 to Team 6 which put
them in the 5th and 6th place play-off with 5 points. Special thanks
to the two ladies who kept goal and excelled themselves with some
excellent saves.
The play-offs saw
a lot of tired legs, but still a lot of good hockey and hard work.
It was good to see a great turn out by senior men and ladies, but
the bonus of the day was the young players who supported the day,
some like Harry Jepson, having their first games in adult hockey.
9th & 10th place:
Team 7 edged this game with a single goal from one of their ladies
against Team 5
7th & 8th place:
Team 6 fell behind to an early goal. Alistair Jacklin said they
threw 'caution to the wind' in their efforts to get back in to the
game and conceded two more goals. Team 1 the Captains' Team wrapped
it up with goals from Dave Wornell, Pete Farrell and Duncan Ogilvie.
Duncan did contrive to miss a sitter (the source of this information
was Alistair), which would have made him leading scorer on the day!
5th & 6th place:
The opening goal for Team 10 came when Martin Palmer slapped in
a right wing cross, much to the disgust of Jon Jarvis in the Team
3 goal! Duncan Armsby squared the game midway through and then had
a chance to win it, but his half volley was blazed high and wide,
when scoring a goal looked the easier option! In the final seconds
Sarah Griffiths thumped a short corner onto the post and Mike Harvey,
who had injected, pounced to turn in the winner for Team 10 seconds
before the final whistle blew.
3rd & 4th place:
Team 9 claimed the third place spot when Alex Yuill scored the only
goal of a closely fought game.
Final: Teams 4 and
8 slugged out the final like two heavy weight boxers, or maybe two
base line tennis players. Chances were at a premium, and when it
looked like a goal was going in Carol covered her keeper by clearing
off the line. On the whistle the score was 0-0 and both sides settled
for finishing joint first.
Once again Club
Day was a massive success. Thanks to Dave Wornell for organising
the day and to everyone who umpired to make the day thoroughly enjoyable.
The comedy umpiring award must go to Mssrs Openshaw Senior and Junior,
with young Openshaw sitting on dad's shoulders and at one stage
blowing his whistle for him! Well done to everyone who took part,
with a good turn out of other halves and children to make it a family
day. |

Veterans:
The Veterans had their return game against O Bristolians at Coombe
Dingle. There was a lot of quality about the early movement of players
and the ball, despite s few sore heads from the night before. Tony
Webster engineered the opening goal, his pass was converted by Steve
Millman in a 'full on' dive (like footballers do when they score).
Steve made contact with the ball at the end of his slide to divert
it in. O Bs countered with an equaliser. Pete Farrell made the Champaigne
moment of the game with his superb pick up of a flighted 50 metre
pass that arced through the air. One or two passes went astray,
but there was still good pressure on the visitors goal. Alan Sparks
made great efforts to control an underpaced pass to the right. The
O Bs defender recovered the ball, turned and made a perfect pass
on behalf of Alan to the unmarked Tony Webster, who drilled the
ball past the exposed keeper. Tony called for improved consistency
in the passing in the second half. The comedy moment of the game
came at the start of the second half when the Westbury centre forward
hit the ball to the opposition on the restart, but cleared all the
defenders with a huge hit for a 16. Umpire Steve Puetz gave a comedy
green card for unsportsman like conduct! There was a lot of effort
from both sides with chances being created at both ends. A Steve
Millman right wing cross found Martin Palmer at the near post, but
he failed to make contact with a huge gap at the near post inviting
a goal. John Ludley was lurking at the back post and his shot hit
the inside of the left post and rolled to Martin who had a simple
tap in to atone for his error mere seconds before. O Bs in contrast
had hit the post once in each half, but the ball ran both times
to Westbury defenders. O Bs did score on a breakaway to make it
a tense last fifteen minutes. There were several very good scoring
chances for Westbury to wrap the game up, but each time the O Bs
goalkeeper pulled off great saves. The final whistle blew for a
deserved and hard earned Westbury victory. Thanks to Steve and Tom
Counsell for umpiring. |
Mace's
Maulers
v Tezza's Terriors was the first game
of a post club dinner triangular tournament, for the sturdier club
members, able to wield a stick after the excesses of the night before.
The game was fought mainly in the midfield and a 0-0 draw was the
final outcome. |
Mace's
Maulers
v Slidder's Sluggers: Game two (each game
being 25 minutes in duration) was a well contested game, with a
lot of good play from both sides. Paul Clark playing in an unfamiliar
left back role, pulled off the goal line save of the game (and proably
the season). With an open goal at his mercy Nathan Walkey having
gone round the keeper flicked the ball goalwards. Paul appeared
from nowhere and having a 'good eye' batted the ball away denying
Nathan a certain goal. With the match heading for a second 0-0 finish,
Justin Chave showed his class with a well struck winner for Slider's
Sluggers.
|
Tezza's
Terriors v Tezza's Terriors: The final
game saw Tezza's Terriors
score the first goal, well taken by Ed Minchin following up a team
mate's shot to score. The game swung the other way when first Justin
Chave scored for Slider's Sluggers, and then Justin rounded the
keeper, flicked the ball at goal and Josh Wanklyn edged it in from
centemetres out just to make sure (a lad with that predatory instinct
in front of gaol)! Tezza's Teriors wouldn't give up and deservedly
snatched a late equaliser from the stick of Ed Minchin. 33 players
took part and it was good to see Paul Mason, Terry Watts, Duncan
Armsby encourage the next generation of young players in David Parry,
Zeyn Mulla and Pete Ratcliffe. With Dave Dineley, Max Longden and
Ed Minchin who have all played first team hockey this season, the
younger lads can see what can be achieved. Well done to everyone
who took part. NB these intra-club goals have NOT been added to
the goalchart! |

1st
XI: A battling first team performance saw them share 6 goals with
Exeter University and come home with a point to finish 6th out of
12 in Premier 2. |
|
2nd
XI
: Neil Moon was under tremendous pressure to
pass the all time second team goal record. He needed 2 goals against
runners up Bristol University to pass Phil Curnock's long standing
102 goal record. At 4-0 down any chance of a result was looking
increasingly slim, but the seconds stuck at it and Phil Haslett
struck a short corner just on the stroke of half time. Neil then
bagged his two goals to achieve his personal milestone and give
the team the belief that they could match their promoted opponents.
The score was at this stage 5-3 to the students. The last 15 minutes
saw great Westbury pressure and Chris Hutton snapped up a chance
from close range to make it a one goal deficit. With time nearly
up a short corner was neatly deflected by Duncan Armsby to equalise.
A stirling effort from the seconds who must now regroup in Division
2 North and look to bounce straight back. |
3rd
XI
: The thirds closed their season with a win
at Mendip by 4-2. They too will be playing in a lower division next
season and will want to return to the Avon Division where they have
had a good late run, but suffered relegation as a result of early
season defeats and the difficulty in reaching the safety threshold
in a division where too many teams are demoted because of issues
in higher divisions! Rich Hill, Richard Beesley, Nathan Walkey and
Stve Millman shared the goals. |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers were also playing a promoted Yate team and fought
hard to get a result. Yate had all the opening play, but then came
a spell when Tom Sammes, Pete Farrell and Tom Colquhoun were denied
goals by good goalkeeping. At half time the game was still locked
at 0-0. Yate scored twice to put them in a strong position. Tom
Sammes banged in an excellent goal and Yate had to work hard in
defence to prevent Westbury from gaining an equaliser. |
Wizards:
The Wizards rounded off their season with a fine win at Weston-Super-Mare.
James Pope, Pete Ratcliffe and Liam Glorney were on target as the
Wizards finished in 4th place. f they hadn't taken the 3 points
on offer in this game they would have been three places lower and
Weston would have leap-frogged them, so that achievement shows what
a good result this was. |
Warriors: The
Warriors opened up an impressive 3 goal lead against a Yate side
who looked the team more in control of the game. Simon Hewit turned
in a James Goodman pass for number one. James then had two successive
shots at the keeper's pads, before volleying in the third rebound
for a great goal. Sam Parker then made it three with a well taken
goal. The call was to protect the lead in the second half. Yate
however had other thoughts and scored a minute into the second half
and then not long later. Yate took over the game and apart from
James Goodman, the midfield were stretched to running and covering.
Yate scored twice more to lead 4-3. The Warriors then stepped up
their game and a clever dummy by Duncan Ogilvie fooled the Yate
keeper and the ball ran nicely for Simon Hewitt to tap in for 4-4.
Then came more goal mouth action and and Andy Parsonage had a shot
that rebounded off the pads to James Goodman, who slotted it through
a crowd of players for 5-4. The final action of the game was a Yate
short corner and to the delight of Yate and the disappointment of
the Warriors they scored to make it 5-5. Joe Petch played well in
goal including one stop with his helmet that bounced back to the
edge of the D. |

Widgets: Dave
Holliday reports: What a way to end to the season!! Yate "B"
already Winners of our League ended their season with just 2 defeats
and we beat them both times!!! Truly
great performance by the guys. Team:-
Jon Jarvis, Chris Tomlinson, Simon Johnson, Brian Nichols, Phil
Simon, Austin Sheppard, Tim Lawrence, Dave Holliday, Tom Alger,
Gareth Nichols, Josh Wanklyn, Peter Thompson, Tony Webster, Mike
Harvey. 3 - 0 up at half time,
pegged back to 3 - 2, then 4 - 2, finally 4 - 3. Scorers
Webster 2, Harvey, Alger. Highlight
- Jon Jarvis finding imaginary patch of ice for his Bambi impression
- fortunately Tim on hand to prevent Yate scoring an easy tap in.
Prior to that Tim made brilliant run into their D to set up Mike
for our first goal. In fact
all our goals were following slick moves around the pitch; great
to see everyone keen to receive the pass and lay it off. Loads of
enthusiasm, brilliant team effort (again), and once again a thoroughly
enjoyable game to play in. Thanks
to Chris Cocks and Tom Sammes for umpiring (very well). AND
thanks to everyone who has played some part in making the Widgets
season so enjoyable and successful. We
ended up 5th in the League (out of 11); Played 20, won 11, lost
9, goals for 49, goals against 49, points 33. Probably
the highest position in the league the Widgets have ever attained
but more importantly the team provided the basis for the proper
development of our youngsters with several who started the season
with us now playing higher up the Club, just reward for a massive
investment of time and effort by many people to ensure that this
principle was to be achieved. Thanks
then to all, brilliant season, massively enjoyable and fun. Great
to see hockey being played with smiles. Big
celebration next Friday then we start all over again with Summer
League Devils and winter Badgers looking to provide further youngsters
who will be the backbone of the Widgets for next season. The Widgets
for the first time ever, finished higher than the Warriors. The
late Yate equaliser in the earlier game enabled the Widgets to overhaul
their points total in the last match of the day. |

XI: The 1sts staged a come back from 2-0 down with a Joe Thomas
goal at home to Exeter Hornets, but finished losing 3-1 with a late
goal from the visitors. |
|
2nd
XI
: The seconds recorded their best result of
the season winning 5-1 at Lydney. Max Longden, Phil Cockram, Reston
Smith, Phil Haslett and Neil Moon were on target. Neil's goal was
his one hundred and first for the seconds, having reached his ton
in a losing game a couple of weeks ago. He is now one goal behind
all time leading second team scorer Phil Curnock. Can he score next
week to reach this milestone? |
3rd
XI
: The thirds had a double disaster less than
2 minutes into the game. N Wilts had a two on one with goalie Martin
Hicks, they scored and Martin went to ground in agony. A paramedic
wa called and took him to A&E. Nick Coates took over in goal
and the thirds were 2-0 down at half time when I left. Result to
follow! |
Wanderers:
A 3-2 win was secured against Firebrands couresy of goals from Tom
Sammes, Zeyn Mulla and Tom Taylor. |
Wizards:
|
Warriors: The
Warriors second half of the season has mirrored last season when
they lost only once to top to champions O Bs. This time it was table
topping Yate who were the opponents and again the final score was
4-0. Yate secured the championship with their closest rivals losing.
It was always going to be a tough ask to get a result. The defence
worked hard throughout the game to keep out a very skillful side.
For twenty minutes it was a very even contest in midfield. Andy
Pound was called into action several times and made a great diving
stop to keep Yate from scoring. Ten minutes either side of the interval,
Yate took control of the game with two goals before and two after
the break. It was fifty minutes into the game before Westbury had
their first shot at goal from Liam Glorney. Playing four across
the middle, there still didn't seem a lot of space for the midfield
to prise open the home defence. Mike Harvey's trickery up front
went unrewarded. The team kept going and despite a lot of home pressure
held them to a respectable four goal advantage. If heads had dropped
it would have been many more. |

Widgets: Dave
Holliday reports; Won 6 - 1. Scorers
Newington (2), Parker, Thompson, Webster, Sheppard. The Widgets
used to be a "Youth Development" team. Notwithstanding
the obvious difficulties of getting the juniors to play when they
have school commitments which take priority, we are fast becoming
the "Temple Meads" side of Westbury Hockey Club - a place
where complete strangers often meet on a Saturday afternoon!!! Once
again a much changed team with 3 guys playing for us for the first
time and several others "passing through". Thus on Saturday
we put in a very un-Widget like performance. With lack of familiarity
amongst the players, gone was the crisp passing at pace, the one-twos',
the running into space to receive the ball, the vision, the team
work. Instead, against a very poor South Glos team, it was often
down the middle dross, with no imagination, vision or efffective
passing. Enough said, a win is a win after all with several highlights.
Simon Johnson played well at emergency right back, Austin Sheppard
was magnificent actually calming people down when tempers got frayed
, Tony Webster celebrated his 800th!!! game for Westbury with a
goal, and Peter Thompson scored his first goal for the Club with
a screamer into the roof of the net. Last League game next Saturday
- against Yate "B" - we will need to get back to our best
and hopefully end the season on a high. |

XI: Probably as hard a game to play as we have had all season. Again
we were completely dominant from the word go, controlled play yet
somehow managed to let our heads drop in the first half. Everyone
held together well and we went in 0-0 at half time with our guests
under no illusions that they were not on top. A quick reminder that
we had to keep cohesion in the beginning stages of the second half
in the shape of a few short corners from Swindon, well dealt with
by a Westbury team growing slowly in confidence. The game progressed
and became more open in spells then reverting to type as both teams
became cagey, not wanting to be the team to allow the other the
break that would settle the match down. Then we decided we had better
get the game back and spent 25 minutes camped in the Swindon 23.
Nothing came and nothing came, umpiring decisions came and went.
Finally after about 3 hours, and with a seeming 3 hours still to
play, Tim Hancock managed to convert our millionth attack and Westbury
recieved the rewards for 60 odd minutes of continued pressure and
faith in their abilities. Massively satisfying to see us grind this
result out, these are the wins that define champions, it was not
pretty, it was not flowing, but it was 3 points. We cannot win every
game 5-0. Excellent. |
|
2nd
XI
: The seconds lost 4-2 at Yate with Chris Cutts
and Chris Hutton getting the goals.. |
3rd
XI
: The thirds earned a point from a 2-2 draw
at Swindon. The talking point after the game was Matt Taylor's goal.
As Matt described it he hit it hard, it caught the edge of a defensive
stick, that shifted the ball upwards, hitting a defender on the
shoulder before finding the top of the net. |
|
Wanderers:
Pete Farrell writes: Unfortunately a 4-1 defeat caused pretty much
by disjointed play and too many of us trying to win the game on
our own. Not enough short sharp passing, holding onto the ball too
long (myself included) and attempts at playing the killer pass meant
that we turned over possession far more often than was healthy.
We started brightly and took a 1-0
lead from a well executed short. Tom Taylor finding the top of the
backboard with a fizzing strike. We thought we had secured a second
in similar fashion that would have made it 2 zip, Tom wheeling away,
arms aloft but as his celebratory "Yes!" echoed round
the Dingle it became apparent that it had been disallowed for crossing
the line above 18 inches. Umpire Krebs on the ball with his micrometer
ruled it out with not a sign of dissent from the Wanderers, though
this was not matched by our disappointment. Decision accepted we
got on with the game. Bristol UWE put together some good hockey
but it was disappointing that they scored with such ease, partially
due to the big hole that had started to appear in our midfield.
This is not a criticism per se as at times we had 6 forwards on
the pitch some of whom were pressed into action in the middle of
the park. Our natural instinct to get forward was matched by our
equally natural instinct not to make it back into position when
play broke down, and to a certain extent this made the counter attack
relatively easy for the oppo. That said they did what we failed
to do, and passed the ball simply around us to the player in space.
A learning point for all of us! In the second half we had opportunities
to score but couldn't quite find that little bit of space in open
play to make them count. Next week Firebrands D - always a keenly
contested affair and something to look forward to! Bring it on! |
Wizards:
The Wizards shared six goals at Imperial and came back with a point.
Alan Sparks notes: A 3-3 draw. A game that the Wizards had the possesion
and potential to win comfortably, but in the end it needed 2 goals
in last 10 minutes to salvage a draw from 3-1 down |
Warriors: The
Warriors were well worth their win playing some good hockey against
S Glos. Duncan Ogilvie celebrated his new job, by scoring four times,
having one disallowed and hitting the post. The first came when
Simon Hewitt whacked a first class cross from the right that Duncan
clipped goalwards. The goalkeeper saved, but Duncan used good footwork
to reposition himself to tuck in the loose ball. His second came
from a Martin Palmer cross come shot from the right, Duncan tapping
in at the back post. The third came from a ball banged into the
D and a clever deflection eluding the keeper. The Warriors lost
Martin Palmer to a torn calf muscle as Duncan made it three. The
second half saw the Warriors using the wings well with Mark Crofts
and Andy Cooper using the ball well. Andy Parsonage in his second
game was finding his touch. Mark Colton scored number four from
a short corner that he topped, but had enough movement on the ball
to deceive the defenders on the line. Duncan added his fourth from
another intelligent ball into the D, again clipping it past the
keeper. S Glos did get a goal when Mark Crofts couldn't unleash
his shot from a Westbury attack and the visitors broke away with
a four on none - well jsut Jon Jarvis to beat. Jon did his best
to shut all four out, but a slip to the left led to an inevitable
goal. The quality of hockey was a big improvement on the last game
and takes the Warriors to a seven game unbeaten run. |
Bdgers:
Duncan Ogilvie reports of the game at N Somerset.: In terms of possession
and territory, Westbury should have come out of this game comfortable
winners. With Zeyn terrorizing the opposition down the right with
his pace, good link play in midfield and composed defending, surely
there was only going to be one winner. It was therefore a surprise
to go in one down at half time thanks to a powerful lob from a short
corner that flew by the keeper's head. Still the mood was positive
and the second half started with a belief that the goals would surely
come. However a combination of last ditch defending and a tendancy
to push the ball onto the last defenders stick, meant that the goal
that would surely open the flood gates never came. |
