The
annual club day wasn't blessed with the sunshine of the previous
seven, but 76 hardy souls braved the opening rain to have
another thoroughly enjoyable, if tiring afternoon. This year
the captains team reappeared , whilst the ladies of Westberries
were spread throughout the seven teams in the same way as
last year. This year goals were in short supply, but that
has to go down to some outstanding goalkeeping provided by
Kirsty Andrews, Sam Banting, Pete Murphy and Martin Eland.
Martin in particular was in brilliant form in every game.
The captains team went unbeaten in every game, but found goals
difficult to come by. Neller scored their two goals in their
1-1 draws, their other four games ended goal less. Team two
chalked up one win and the almost obligatory 0-0 draw. They
lost three games, two of them by very close scores. Team three
earned two 0-0 draws, lost three games but finished the day
by beating previously unbeaten Team seven. Becky stepped up
in the D to hammer in the only goal. Team four opened up with
a hard fought win against Team three with Tufty getting a
goal and their Westberries full back scored from a short.
They were 2-0 down in one game and Moonie pulled it back to
all square, his second goal coming with him lying in front
of goal with the ball within reach enabling him to score.
They were the only team not to have a 0-0 game, but did draw
1-1 twice, whilst two 1-0 defeats kept them down with the
pack! Team five notched up two wins with Jamie Cranfield flicking
the ball over the almost unbeatable Martin Eland to win 1-0
against Team two, whilst Dave Dinely hammered in a well struck
goal in their 2-0 win against Team three. Max Longden showed
his reflexes when he reacted quickly to score when Paddy Haynes'
shot came back to him off the post to get an equaliser against
Team four. Team five finished in a creditable third place.
Team seven went unbeaten until their final game. They opened
with two 0-0 draws, were 2-0 against team four with two Martin
Palmer goals but were pegged back to 2-2. Two wins courtesy
of goals from Joe Thomas and Shads v Team two and a single
well taken shot from Shads against Team five put them in a
well earned runners-up spot. The team of the day was undoubtedly
Team six. They only conceded one goal and knocked in nine
of their own. On a low scoring day, their nine goal scoring
\put them deservedly at the top of the table. Worny knocked
in the only goal in games against Teams four and three. They
actually knocked in four against Team three. They won four
of their games, had a 1-1 draw, plus a 0-0 result against
the runners up. The rain that threatened to make it an uncomfortable
day never really became persistent and the day ended overcast
but reasonably dry. The hockey maintained the usual high standard
served up at club day. I've already mentioned the outstanding
goalkeeping and once again it was good to see youngsters like
Dave Dinely, Peter Ratcliffe, Max Longden and Ned Holmes show
their skills. The ladies contributed to the success of the
day and knocked in at least three goals. Well done to Worny
for another first class club day. If anyone wants their goals
added please post them on the forum.

XI
: A mixture of players from the upper end of
the club were involved with a goal 'fest' at O Bristolians. Limbo
2, TC 2 Joe Crill and Neller were on target for Westbury, but O
Bristolians countered with seven goals of their own! |
|
Wizards:
With O Bs only able to muster two teams it fell to the mixed bunch
of players from the Warriors and Widgets to masquerade as the Wizards.
They even had the check to take a very early lead. Tom Taylor banged
in a free hit from the right. AJ found himself in an unaccustomed
place in the opposing D and met the ball. His attempted shot was
mis-hit, but this completely surprised the keeper who could only
watch. wrong footed as it trickled over the line. This was AJ's
first goal for the club, and only his second in club hockey. The
first half then became to JJ show as he threw himself at everything
that O Bs could throw at him. In front of him Brian Callis, Brian
Nichols, Dave Ratcliffe and AJ needed to be at their best to keep
out a strong running O Bs team. Add a little bit of wayward finishing
and at the interval the Wizards were still amazingly 1-0 up having
had two shots at goal. The second half saw both side press forward,
the visitors having more chances, but Pete Thomas was unlucky not
to score on three occasions. O Bs at last found a good finish with
a fine individual goal to square the game up. There were good chances
at each end, but the game was decided by Pete Thomas. His first
shot came back to him and he made no mistake with the second. O
Bs pushed hard for the equaliser during the last ten minutes. They
finished the game with a flurry of short corners but could not find
the net. Well done to the players who conjured up this win against
a very good opposing team. Tonka was in control in the middle, James
Pope was full of running. Dave Holliday and Jimmer made telling
contributions and Peter Ratcliffe is rapidly gaining experience out on the pitch. |
3rd
XI
: v Wanderers: With O Bs reduced in number the
selected teams played each other at Coombe Dingle. The PC brigade
will say these goals don't count, but you never know they might
change their mind, because this was a very good game of hockey.
(* To date the goals have not been added). Considering many had
been at the dinner, there was still a lot of strong running and
good passing. The Wanderers took the lead when a well worked passing
move ended with Will Jones driving the ball in from just inside
the edge of the D. A first half equaliser came from Bees. There
was a stinging cross shot and newly crowned 'Life Member' Bees volleyed
it in at the far post. AJ in goal was showing that he can do the
job and made several saves. Jimmer cleared a Bees short corner off
the line and Peter Rose was unlucky to see his shot come back off
the post denying the wanderers an equaliser. The thirds relied on
the pace of Bees and Griff up front! The Wanderers had Tufty up
front to hit as a target man. The second half was pretty even with
both teams creating chances, especially when they tired after their
late nights and lack of sleep. The thirds then took the lead when
Bees took possession on the right and delivered a square ball for
Griff to tap in. The comedy moment came when Bees lofted a pass
from the half way line to Griff in the D. Griff shaped to pull the
ball down out of the air and beat the keeper. However, it was still
coming to him at rocket like speed and he decided that his head
might just intercept the ball before he could get his stick to it,
so he took to the deck as quickly as possible, much to the laughter
of the crowd and his team-mates. As the ball hurtled past him, you
could see he took an inelegant, but never-the-less wise option!
The Wanderers had several short corners to equalise and it was with
the last of theses that Tufty hammered in an equaliser. The Wanderers
came closest to winning very late in the game but AJ (who kept goal
for the Wanderers in the first half and swapped with Smurf in the
second) pulled off two good saves. The score ended 2-2 and honours
were even. |

Despite
a verbal confirmation of three matches on Tuesday, no Cardiff teams
traveled to Bristol, and although we were advised 3:30pm at Sophia
Gardens the 3rds found no one was expecting them. Griff explains
in his report how they did their best to overcome the problem.
|
|
3rd
XI
: On a wet and windy day we arrived at Sophia
gardens with messages from Slider to say Cardiff had not turned
up in Bristol, Enquires with a Cardiif player on the slidelines
who was watching a re-arranged cardiff league match who made frantic
phone calls to discover there had clearly been some "cock up"
with the Westbury - Cardiff fixture. We had no opposition, however
as Cardiiff clearly have similiar pride and spirit as Westbury (and
to maintain the good relationship that we have between the clubs)
the team who had just played were persuaded (read told) to play
again whilst reinforecements were called up. During the course of
the first half a number of good youngsters arrived on their mountain
bikes to replace some of the walking wounded! We had a mixture of
players including the up and coming Banting jnr, Holmes and Dinely.
We played some good hockey in the first half and went in 2-0 up
with goals from Chris Cutts(from a short) and Dave Dinely. Sam pulled
off some good saves. The second half saw Cardiff score two quick
goals. One of thier youngsters was a welsh international who plays
in the 1st team. He scored a third . we had an opportunity to squeeze
an equaliser before Cardiff scored a fourth just before the end.
The real difference between the two teams was the Welsh international
(he was very good and quick for 16) ! Cardiff took us back to the
Conway Arms for a beer and organised tea. Their was a disco at the
pub in the evening but we decided not to stay, our youngsters were
not part of the decision making progress as when asked if the wanted
a drink -one of them replied "can I have a pint of strongbow"
- all three were given a coke ! |

Widgets:
S Glos came needing a win by two or more goals to secure promotion.
The Widgets could have pulled together a side to spoil the party,
but in true Westbury spirit and fairness it was a typical Widgets
side that actually started the game quite strongly. Dom Harris had
the first shot of the game. His reverse stick sweep went narrowly
wide. The Widgets fielded seven veterans with three of them over
60. The S Glos forwards had just a little more speed and were able
to link up a few more of their passes urged on by their supporters
eager to see them win. The opening goal came when Westbury failed
to clear. The S Glos forward turned and hammered in from close range.
Then came a gift when a square pass from one Widgets defender to
another was intercepted and finished up in the goal. The visitors
were playing the better hockey by now as the Widgets found it hard
to string their passes together. S Glos scored a third before the
interval. In the second half the Widgets worked hard and contained
their opponents to just one more goal. There wasn't a great difference
between the teams, but S Glos had more urgency in their game and
got the result they wanted to claim the runners-up spot in division
3. Napper sportingly bought them a jug of lager to help them celebrate
their promotion. |
Legends
v Academy: The
hardy Westbury players who had turned up at 2:00pm and hung around
along with the 4:00pm squad, assembled into two teams - red and
green (Academy) v black (Legends). A very good match ensued with
both side playing excellent hockey on a wet blustery day. The Legends
opened with a bang with Limbo setting up a square pass for Slider
to sweep in. Limbo then had a one on one with AJ (playing only his
second ever game in goal). AJ won this one and later in the game
pulled of an outstanding save from a Limbo flick. The Academy had
a very good first half with Reston Smith controlling the middle
of the park. Village looked sharp, and Graeme Brown was in fine
form on the right wing. Village banged in an equaliser, then followed
up with a short corner strike that Jamie Cranfield cleverly steered
in at the near post. Limbo found success against AJ to equalise.
The Academy took the lead when the ball came to Village who put
in a delightful flick over the top of Smurf to give them a 3-2 advantage
going into the break. The Legends asserted themselves in the second
half and scored seven unanswered goals. The Academy came close to
goal but couldn't beat Smurf. It was still an end to end game but
the Legends were quick on the break with Limbo and Tufty linking
well up front. Croftsy equalised soon after the restart. Limbo made
it 4-3 and Tufty banged in his customary goal, both of these were
thumping strikes from the top of the D. Croftsy swept in a pass
at the far post. Limbo completed his hat trick with a deft flick
after one of his 'trade mark' runs. The final goal came from Slider
who completed his hat-trick. AJ still managed to save shots from
Limbo and Nick Coates. There were good performance all over the
park. Special mention should be made of youngsters Max Longden and
Will Glynn who played very well. Jamie Cranfield added a lot of
passes to his usual hard running game. Once again the club showed
how it can play meaningful intra-club games which gives players
from lower down the club a chance to excel with quality players
from the higher sides. |

XI: The first team finished their season with a disappointing defeat
against Gloucester. Psycho bagged a hat-trick and Neller added another,
but the let in 6 and with Team Bath Buccs winning they drop to 4th
from bottom. It now remains to see how many come down from the National
League to finalise how many teams are relegated from Prem 1!

XI
: The seconds entertained champions Gloucester
and gave them an exhibition in scoring goals on a wet day. An excellent
win for the twos. |
|
3rd
XI
: Griff writes: On a very wet Saturday the 3rds
played against Bath Buccs F (Bath Uni 2nds). We went one nil up
and had opportunity to get a second. Buccs scored twice in the first
half to take a narrow lead in a competitive first half. The second
half saw some clinical finishing from Buccs forwards and with a
tiring 3rd team, they scored 5 quick goals ! However Westbury dominated
the last 10 minutes scoring two goals (not sure if this was related
to the Ladies national league game being moved to the sand based
astro and the fact there were 30 girls watching) ! Final score 7-3 |
|
Wanderers
v Wizards: The final battle of Westbury for the season was closely
monitored by three Somerset Gryphons players to see that fair play
was observed having a vested interest in ensuring the Wizards lost
and therefore not overhaul them. In very wet conditions it was the
Wanderers who opened brightly and Straun Wilkins could easily had
two goal in the first 5 minutes before the Wizards could even muster
some action at the other end. However, both shots flashed inches
wide of the goal. Dave Dinely stepped up a gear and looked in a
class of his own. Tufty set him off down the right, he cleverly
attacked the D with Tufty supporting him for the square ball. Dave
did it brilliantly, a slipped pass to Tufty was a certain goal.
Dave's final touch somehow went completely astray, trickling to
wards the goal. Somehow the ball caught a foot or a stick and trickled
back to Dave who coolly reversed it into the goal. The Wizards put
up an excellent rear-guard with Jez Longden, Cocksy, Jimmer and
Will Glynn looking very strong. Joel Chase and Max Longden up front
had a generally lonely time as the Wizards spent most of the match
keeping the wanderers at bay. JJ pulled off some great saves to
deny the Wanderers a second goal. At half time the Wizards still
felt they had a part to play as there was still only one goal in
it. Both sides put together some good hockey on a wet and slippery
day when getting a good grip on the stick was made difficult by
the conditions. The Wizards did create a couple of chances as the
game neared its end, but surprisingly Joel Chase, their top scorer
was benched for the last five minutes! The Wanderers finished as
worthy winners by 1-0, although the Wizards gave it a good go but
despite some determined play could not carve out the type of attacks
that would have given them the opportunities to equalise. Across
the teams there were good performances from Will Holmes, Si Andrews,
Will Jones and George Banting. It was good to see Andy Griffin back
after illness. |

Warriors: The
Warriors traveled to O Bristolians who need the three points to
secure second place in the division. O Bs established a 3-0 lead
despite some dogged defending from Mssrs Openshaw, Nichols and Bower.
In the pre-match preparation AJ was coerced into putting the pads
on, having never played in goal before. His first touch was a superb
save with his hand to a hard shoulder high flick, unfortunately
it fell to an attack to tap home. AJ played well and was judged
man-of-the-match by a mile. The Warriors put pressure on the home
team and had four successive short corners. They even had the ball
in the back of the net, only to see the short corner given for a
preceding offence. In the second half the Warriors took the game
by the scruff of the neck and pressed the home team back into their
half. Martin Dash was controlling a lot of the play from the middle
and was well placed, unmarked in the D to score only to see a shot
at goal rather than a slipped pass to him from a forward! The shot
was saved the opportunity lost. Bomber Harris had been playing well
despite being marked (and often 'clobbered') by three defenders.
At last he rode a tackle cut down the bye-line and pulled the ball
back for Martin Palmer to sweep in for a well worked goal. O Bs
had a good spell in the middle of the half and earned a penalty
stroke which they scored from. Westbury finished the game strongly
and deserved a second goal. With Brain Nichols and Martin Palmer
on the bench with ham string pulls for most of the second half,
and Dashy playing on with a strained groin, it was a whole-hearted
effort by the Warriors to hold the eventual runners up of this division
to 4-1. In fact the second half was drawn 1-1. The team have played
well in the last six games since Dashy came up from the Widgets.
The midfield has been creating more scoring opportunities. Earlier
in the season the ball rarely reached the opposing D. If the team
plays like this next season then they have a good chance of doing
well in division 3. |

Widgets: Clifton
Ladies switched to the sand pitch because the water was unplayable
and played their National League match at the expense of the Widgets'
game. It should be replayed in two weeks, subject to confirmation. |

XI: The first team picked up a very important point at home to Cheltenham.
The visitors opened brightly establishing an early lead. The first
team fought back with goals from Joe Thomas and Psycho. The firsts
were within minutes of winning, but Cheltenham grabbed a late equaliser.
With one game to play, Bath Buccs
are effectively the only team who can overhaul the first team and
they are away at Cheltenham next week, while Neller and co wind
up their season at Gloucester.

XI
: The seconds shared eight goals in their match
with Cheltenham. Tezzer's tomb: In terms of goals scored this was
a game of two halves, in terms of our performance level we were
generally good throughout. We traveled to Cheltenham with just 11
players - Chris Butt dropping out on us minutes before we had to
leave due to car problems. We started the
game on fire; playing some great hockey and pinning Cheltenham back
inside their half with some excellent passing moves. Paddy Haynes
eventually opened the scoring for us with a goal after 15mins…Great
stuff…..then it all went a bit weird. Because of our dominance
we were playing very high up the pitch which left us open to the
long ball tactic. This coincided with Cheltenham being forced in
to launching aerials in an effort to get out of their half. This
tactic paid off for them, they broke four times and scored four
goals! It was one those periods where everything Cheltenham hit
went in.We went into half time 4 – 1
down and looking a bit confused. We had clearly been the better
team and yet we were trailing by three goals - bizarre. The message
at half time was clear; this game was not over. If we could get
one goal then we would get two or three more.We started the 2nd
half well, this time dealing with their aerials much more confidently.
From here on in we dominated. With 10 minutes gone Moondog put in
our second, with about 20 minutes gone Moondog put in our third
and then with 30mins gone Moondog popped up again to slam in our
fourth making the game level with 5mins to go. In the last minute
Moondog slammed in a fifth goal from a short corner however there
was a slight delay as the umpires conferred before the ruling it
out deeming the initial shot to have been dangerous. Damn it!The
game finished four all, it was a great come back for us, but it
is another game we should have won. I find myself thinking that
a lot this season.
Ah well on to Gloucester city next week. Final Score 4-4

: Griff writes:
It was the local derby for the 3rds who were away against Robinsons.
Robs had the better of the first 15 mins and took an early lead.
The 3rds got back into the game dominating the last 15mins of the
first half, creating a number of chances. Just before the end of
the first half, Tom Alger picked up the ball just outside the 25
and drove towards Robs "D" before beating a player at
the top and before striking the ball past their keeper. In the second
half the 3rds again had the better chances, but found themselves
behind before two strike from Gareth Nichols. For the equaliser
Gareth beat the defender before skillfully taking the ball past
the keeper and slotting it home. A good competitive game and it
is always nice to win a local derby ! This win leads to next week's match v Team Bath Buccs with the winner
securing third place. This has been a good season for the thirds
who have stayed consistently at or near the top of the table all
season.

Wanderers:
The Wanderers could have been well ahead of Firebrands by half time.
Geoff Rickard and Straun Wilkins
were denied by good saves from the
opposing goalkeeper. Doug Scott, Straun and Will Holmes worked the
ball around well in midfield in the first half. The Wanderers lost
Fazza early on with what looks like a broken finger. Will Jones had
to clear on Firebarnd's effort of the line and the score stood at
0-0 at the break. The second half opened perfectly with Dave Dinely
slipping the ball for Tufty to strike it high into the net. Then it
all went pear shaped. Westbury conceded a quick equaliser and then
Firebrands, who fielded ten men throughout, took the lead. The Wanderers
pressed hard for an equaliser, but they were caught on the break and
Firebrands scored a third. The Wanderers are guaranteed 4th place
which follows up last season's third place.

Wizards:
Well done the Wizards who were so on top in their match at N Bristol,
that goalkeeper JJ didn't touch the ball and sweeper Jez Longden
had to 'sweep up' twice. Jamie Cranfield opened the scoring. He
popped at the edge of the D and whacked in a well struck goal. A
second followed when a short corner was switched right, the ball
was squared across the face of the goal and Croftsy pounced to score.
Then came number three. This time it was Croftsy who delivered the
ball from the right to Jamie Cranfield, who slipped it to Max Longden
whi coolly slammed it under the diving keeper. In between each goal
Croftsy and Jez had a goal disallowed. In the second half N Bristol
were able to put some pressure on the Wizard's defence and JJ was
called into action to make several vital saves. JJ was elated with
this his first ever 'clean sheet' since donning the pads and observed
this was the first time he had finished on a winning side this season!
A draw against the Wanderers next week would enable them to pass
Somerset Gryphons if they are unable to overcome O Bristolians who
are in second place.

Warriors: The
Warriors gave another determined display at home to N Bristol. They
should have been one up but a penalty stroke was saved, yet within
a minute a goal did come. The ball was running out of play over
the back line. However, Harry Newington used his long legs and reach
to square the ball for Martin Palmer to atone for his error from
the spot by bundling the ball in from close range. The Warriors
played some very good hockey and Harry was too much for the visitors
to handle. He put in some thumping crosses that weren't far away
from being turned into goals. However, N Bristol who looked a better
side than their A team were able to work the ball around well and
scored twice by half time. In the second half the visitors threw
a screen, sometimes of ten men in front of the ball as the Warriors
searched for an equaliser. Late in the game a breakaway by N Bristol
led to them scoring a third. Jon Bower was in great form throughout
the game and there were strong performances from the whole team. |
Widgets: The
Widgets put up stiff resistance in the first half to shut out the
O Bristolians forwards. Brain Callis was covering well and Adrian
Napper used his reach to get in some important touches to break
up the home attack. Peter Rose and Chris Millman were playing well
on the right. O Bs took control of the second half and scored four
times, the last was a little lucky because the Westbury keeper decided
to leave a ball that got a late deflection past him. The Widgets
worked hard throughout the game and made the home side work very
hard for their win! |

XI: The first team played Cardiff University in a match targeted
as 'must win', to ensure that the team stays away from the bottom
of the table. Unfortunately the firsts could not find the victory
they wanted even after taking the lead, and are now fifth from bottom,
just 2 point ahead of Team Bath Buccs and Swansea Bay. Relegation
is going to depend on how many teams drop down from the National
League. The firsts have two tough games left against Gloucester
(2nd place) and Cheltenham (4th place). |
|

XI
: The second team earned a point at home to
Team Bath Buccs. Trailing 2-1 into the closing minutes it looked
as though they were heading for a home defeat. With just seconds
left Reston Smith won the ball in the D, hit it out to Limbo at
left midfield. Limbo sprinted forward attacking the top of the D.
He slipped the ball left to Paddy Haynes who made it to the bye
line, cut back inside and squared the ball across the face of the
goal, where Moondog slid in to push the ball in at the far post.
An excellent team goal. It shows the high standards that the seconds
set for themselves, in that they were disappointed and felt a draw
was not enough! They are now 4 points behind W Wilts who are in
second place. |
3rd
XI
: For 68 minutes the thirds were in the driving
seat at home against N Wilts. Nathan Walkey in the very first minute,
stole the ball from a defender just outside the D and advanced into
the striking zone where he delivered the perfect start. With Chris
Butt, Cuttsy and JPS driving things forward it was all Westbury
for the first half. However, it took until the last minute of the
half for goal number two to arrive. Tom Alger waltzed past defenders
and tucked it under the keeper. In the second half it was more of
the same. Gazza and Chewie had several chances to score. JPS did
get number three from the penalty spot after a foot on the line
from a short corner. Goals number four, five and even six should
have come, but didn't. Sam Banting had to make some important saves
as the game was winding down. Then came a fluky goal which deflected
over Sam's head and in. In less than a minute N Wilts had a second.
There was just 40 seconds left to play and what feels like a big
win for the thirds finished up as a close 3-2 score line. Grif said
before the game, that the thirds were often at their best in the
first half and let it slip in the second. Today they won the first
half 2-0 and lost the second 2-1! |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers won their local derby with W Glos by four goals to
two. |
Wizards:
The Wizards earned a point in their 2-2 draw at N Somerset. Will
Holmes was man-of-the-match in a game where Joel Chase scored twice. |
Warriors: The
Warriors at last got something from a game. Their play during the
last month has deserved more. Imperial at the start of the game
scored in under a minute. The Warriors pushed forward with Dashy,
Dom Harris and Graeme Brown looking very positive when using the
ball. It took until just before half time for the Warriors to equalise.
Martin Palmer and Ger Openshaw had been very unlucky not to get
a goal. It fell to Harry Newington to get it. Harry had the ball
on his reverse stick at the edge of the D and scooped it high in
the air, over the keeper and under the bar. A stunning goal! Imperial
scored again in the second half. Westbury upped the pace of the
game and Imperial were forced to play a long ball game to a lone
striker as Westbury pushed for an equaliser. A visiting defender
stopped a shot on the line with the help of his foot and a penalty
stroke was awarded. With the regular taker on the bench, Martin
Dash stepped up to take it. He coolly drilled his first penalty
stroke for 17 years in to the square the game at 2-2. There was
still time for Imperial to get 4 successive short corners. Mike
Harvey dealt brilliantly with each one to preserve a well earned
point. Harry Newington was man-of-the-match, playing one of the
best games we have seen from him full of pace, control and well
executed skills. |
Widgets: The
Widgets came up against a N Somerset side who were just too strong
for them. They conceded 8 goals with Chris Millman getting a consolation
goal. |
