Without doubt this
was the hottest and best attended club day, the seventh time the
club has gathered together to mix up the players and see what happens.
This time the ladies were split across all eight teams rather than
playing as Westberries. In pool 1 it was Team 1 who set the pace
to reach the final with two 1-0 wins on the water. Team 2 edged
into second place with Team 3 very close behind. Team 4 opened up
with a big win, but couldn't live up to that start and faded into
last place in the pool.
In pool 2 there
were a lot more goals. Team 8 opened up with a 3-0 win, the skills
of Moonie, TC and Neller showed up in the last 10 minutes when they
scored their goals. They then had a close fought 2-1 win against
Team 6. Team 7 caused a big surprise when they beat Team 8 3-2 in
one of the best matches in the pool. The vital scores were a combination
of Si Andrews who broke down the right and put in 3 accurate crosses
to James Pope who was at the far post to sweep in and identical
hat-trick. Team 7 also had the goal of the day in their defeat against
Team 5. Sam Parker cut to the left of the D and from the edge hit
a reverse stick shot that flew high into the air over the keeper
and into the goal. Even Team 5 shook his hand in celebration of
a marvellous goal. Team 5 recovered from their 3-0 defeat to win
both their other games. James Bladon returned after two years away
and notched a goal himself. Chewie scored two goals in his inimical
style, running into the D at speed and hitting unstoppable shots.
Helen too followed up her short corner and was pleased to bundle
the ball home in the 4-2 win. Team 6 played well in all their games,
Bengladesh international Hamble scored in his first game and showed
his stick skills. Cassie scored in their 2-1 defeat as they headed
for the wooden spoon match. In one game they were unlucky when the
ball came back off the post several times during one game. The comedy
moment of the day came when Nick Coates was moving forward with
the ball and Neller came in from Nick's right to win the ball (something
he usually does with ease). This time Neller collided with Nick
and bounced off him falling to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
It took him some time for Neller to get up, whilst Nick (as solid
as a rock) just smiled obligingly.
The 7th and 8th
place play off was and end to end game, with both side creating
chances. Nathan Walkey found the net with his clever stick work
going round the keeper, getting his feet round the ball and flicking
it into the goal. A few minutes later Nathan was the provider, ghosting
past the defence on the right he squared the ball for John Ludly
to score. 2-0 to Team 4.
The 5th and 6th
place final was a more dogged game with a lot of tired legs. It
looked as though the game was heading for a 0-0 draw, but Team 3
prompted by Bomber, had a flurry of late shots all stopped by the
keeper's pads. However, one rebound fell to Gareth Nichols who slapped
it home collapsing to the ground in the process. The result was
decided by this very late goal in favour of Team 3.
The 3rd and 4th
place match was very even. Team 5's best chances came from Helen's
short coners. Despite her lack of confidence she was on target with
three of them, one being cleared off the line. Team 2 looked dangerous
going forward and Deaks and Terry Watts had to be at their best.
The only goal came when Team 2 broke down the right and the cross
was steered in from under Kinger's feet by Debbie.
The final saw Team
1 going for a clean sweep in the play-offs for pool one teams. This
was a well contested game with both teams moving the ball round
on the drying surface. Team 1 had Ger Openshaw, Will Enderby and
Jimmer keeping tabs on Moonie, TC and Neller. Dom Harris was creating
chances for Team 1 but they were unable to find the finish to score
the vital goal. With the game moving into the final minutes, Team
8 had a series of short corners. From one of these Felix thumped
in a stinging shot for a 1-0 lead. A couple of minutes later a break
down the left was squared across the face of the goal, and Chris
Cutts was there at the far post to hit in the clinching goal.
Club day 7 was once
again well organised by Worny. The five goalkeepers deserve praise
(Kinger, Smurf, Sam Banting, Martin Eland and the ladies keeper)
and thanks too to Vanda and TC for doing the lion's share of the
umpiring.
The day was completed
at the pitch side with the Team Player of the Season and Leading
Scorers Awards. The Players of the Season were: Paul Mason (1st
XI), Tim Dawson (2nd XI), Gareth Nichols (3rd XI), Doug Scott (Wanderers),
Pete Murphy (Wizards), Sam Banting (Warriors), Fox (Widgets). The
Leading scorers were: James Goodman 9 goals (1st XI), Tony Webster
10 goals (2nd XI), Tony Webster 23 goals (3rd XI), Steve Millman
17 goals (Wanderers), Martin Palmer 21 goals (Wizards), Joel Chase
7 goals (Warriors), Dave Money 12 goals (Widgets)

XI: On a hot Saturday afternoon both teams looked energetic at the
start with Cardiff taking an early lead. They were strong performances
from Neller and Nathan Walkey and Smurf was in great form once again.
Westbury, with a mixed bag of players, not only equalised but went
ahead with two Tony Webster goals. A second half Cardiff attack
saw a visiting stiker put in a thumping shot that Smurf saved, but
a Cardiff player couldn't react quiclky enough and the rebound hit
him in the face. After a long delay Pete Thomas switched to play
for Cardiff. The visitors scored from the resulting short, then
Pete scored against Westbury for the second time in 8 days after
his gaol on tour, he cracked in a slipped short corner. Cardiff
looked the stronger side at the finish, and 22 very hot and thirsty
players trooped off to end the season. |

XI: A mixed bag of players took the field against
Stroud, and looked a little subdued in their execution with pace
and threats on goal being a little sparse in the first half. When
a goal eventually arrived it was Duncan Ogilvie whose snap shot
came to Gareth Nichols who squared it for Tony Webster to score
with his second effort after the first had been saved. Neller and
Limbo shared the sweeping duties and were rearely troubled, they
looked well in command of everything that came their way. A second
goal came from an excellent reverse stick Webster strike. Stroud
then managed to find a way past Moonie who had dealt well with all
their previous shots. A two goal advantage was restored when Tonka
struck from the edge of the D. To cap it all off Duncan Ogilvie,
who had seen his previous shot come back off the post scored number
4. Poker and Sparky turned out for Stroud, credit should go to the
visitors for not cancelling and making a game of it. |
Wizards:
Match number 5 for the Wizards v O Bristolians, saw the visitors
look very solid in all areas of the pitch and press the home defence,
creating a lot of chances. Sam Banting made three great saves in
rapid succession to stop O Bs from scoring. Si Andrews had a fine
game at sweeper in a half that saw OBs have the greater share of
possession. With the score balnk at half time there was everything
to play for. owever, it was O Bs who scored after a period of play
in which they played skillfully and effectively. This goal triggered
the Wizards responce and there was renewed effort to take the game
forward. It fell to Mark Crofts to equalise after a typical Croftsy
run and a smartly placed shot. With 10 mnutes to go the Wizards
'specila team' at short corners did their job yet again. Mike Harvey
injected the ball, Martin Palmer stopped it, and Mark Colton drilled
it it before any O Bs defender could react. Andy Cameron was on
hand to keep the one goal advantage when for once Sam was beaten,
Andy arrived at speed to clear oof the line. As the game drew to
a close the Wizards played some neat, well organised hockey. There
were strong performances from everyone who took part. Rob Hughes
showed he has added a lot of quality to his game to go with his
non-stop running. Thanks to Limbo and M'ud for umpiring when they
could just as easily have stayed at home and put their feet up. |
Feymous
writes: Ghosts of Easter past, present and hopefully future gathered
at Henbury School on Sunday April 1st to play a game in Bob Hayman’s
memory – between a Manager’s XI and a President’s
XI. Bob’s daughter Alison and her family looked on as 25 players
tried to shake off the rigors of the weekend (Richard Banwell and
Alex McDonald in particular seemed to have had a very rigorous weekend)
and produce a decent game of hockey, which in fact they did. The
first goal came after only a couple of minutes and the scorer could
not have been more appropriate. Dave Holliday anticipated a loose
ball at the top of the D and struck it (with just enough of a mishit
to make it lethal) past Neil King’s outstretched left foot.
It was a good start for the Manager’s XI but after a while
the President’s XI started pressing hard for an equaliser,
with Phil Haslett and Gary Roper unsurprisingly prominent. Andy
Griffin and Tom Taylor stood firm at the back for the Manager’s
XI whilst Brian Callis and a sharp-looking Phil Curnock were having
a battle royal down the President’s XI right.Brian seemed
to have got the best of this when he stopped a well-struck short
corner from Phil Curnock on the line. However shortly before half-time
Phil Curnock won a short corner when a Brian Callis tackle ended
in him tumbling to the ground (5.9, 5.8. 5.9….). This time
Phil had the sense to hammer it inside the other post for a well-deserved
equaliser. The second half continued to be end to end. Again the
Manager’s XI had the happy knack of getting a stick in the
way at the last moment to avoid conceding a goal – often the
stick belonged to Pete Murphy who was having an outstanding game
in goal. Just when it seemed that neither team would break the deadlock
the Manager’s XI produced a couple of outstanding moves to
score two goals in quick succession. On both occasions they managed
to bypass Neil King, with Steve Millman and Richard Banwell applying
the finishing touches. The President’s XI pulled one back,
when Martin Fey blocked a goalbound shot, only for the ball to run
across the D to Michelle Jacobs. Martin was to regret this as Michelle’s
flick flew past his ear into the roof of the net.Was there to be
an equaliser? The President’s XI continued to press, with
Chris Cocks doing his famous overlapping centre back routine and
Richard Beesley playing in a fluid role. Beesley then threw caution
to the winds, substituting Neil King and playing with 11 outfield
players. Would fortune favour the brave. Er, no. In fact the Manager’s
XI was to score a late fourth with Neil Callis taking advantage
of Neil’s absence. All that was left was to thank the umpires,
Bob Pearse and Ian Small, then assemble in the centre circle for
Tony Webster to say a few words about Bob and for the players to
give three cheers in his memory. Then team photos and back to the
Victoria to remember Bob in the way he would have approved of.A
most enjoyable day.

XI: The final league match of the season for the
seconds saw them 5-1 up at one stage but having to settle for just
a point when the home side pulled back to 5-5. There was a hat-trick
for Tony Webster. Psycho and TC were on target, TC's goal taking
him to the top of the 2nd team leader board.

Wanderers:
Well done the ten men of the Wanderers team who took on Cleevillians
and won 2-1. Fazza put the finishing touch to an outstanding bit
of team work for his goal and Neller's shot actually burst the net.
An unusual feature of the game was that one of the home umpires
sent his own son off with a yellow card in a show of 'parent power'. |
Wizards:
The Wizards put together some great hockey to see off a spirited
side from Bridgwater. The visitors scored first through Nathan Walkey
who was guesting for them and bobbled his shot past Smurf, as Bridgwater
only had ten players. Village flicked in the equaliser following
good work by Rob Hughes. Rob then set up Fazza who scooped the ball
over the keeper from close range. Chewie surged past a couple of
defenders before unleashing a powerful shot, head high past the
keeper. Tony Webster was unlucky to have a goal ruled out. This
was a very open game and Smurf pulled off some great saves. Credit
to the opposition who came one short and played a very honest game,
they even owned up to a foot in the D and gave us a short corner.
|
Warriors: The
Warriors wrapped up their season with a mammoth score of 8-3 at
Bridgwater. Pete Thomas knocked in 2 as did Shads. Martin Travis
scored twice as well and Cocksy popped in two of his own. |
Widgets: The
Widgets final match was technically a play-off for 5th place against
Bristol UWE. The interesting point in the match was the 'chase'
for leading scorer. Joel Chase was one goal behind dave Money and
became available when he discovered how close he was. The text from
Duncan Ogilvie revealed that John Fox scored twice and Duncan 'stole'
a goal from Joel. This has been a season of achievement for the
Widgets, who finished with a well deserved 50% record.

XI: The first team closed their season with a frustrating game at
Cheltenham losing by just a single goal. Meaks writes: This was
an ordinary game, played at an ordinary pace against an ordinary
opposition. It had a real feel of an end of season, nothing riding
on it game. Cheltenham scored from a dragged short in the second
half, we had chances to score in both halves but couldn't convert.
I can't really be bothered to say anymore about the game, apart
from Mason was awesome as usual and the Cheltenham clubhouse had
a touch of the Firebrands about it after the game.
Thanks to all those who have played
for the firsts this season, everyone who has stepped in has done
a good job for us. The second half of the season saw us with a 4-3-3
record, which is excellent for a first season back in Prem 1. We've
also had some excellent support from the rest of the club, the whole
team appreciates it. The opposition less so.Cracking night in the
Alma on Saturday night, there are very few clubs that would have
players from every team drinking together on a night that isn't
a club dinner. The funniest converstaion I had was about the merits
of those players who have put themselves forwards for indoor hockey.
Certain players in the list may not have transferable skills, no
names here obviously.

2nd
XI: The second team beat N Bristol 3-2 to finish
a very creditable 5th place in their first season in this division.
Terry Watts Slider and ? were on target. The seconds were ahead
of 5 other 1st XIs in their division. Slider says: To echo the words
of our esteemed 1st team skipper, this too was an ordinary game,
played at an ordinary pace against ordinary opposition. Much to
the captain's chagrin, it seemed that to many, this was just an
end of season, nothing riding on it game. As such we played well
below our usual high standards, our focus wavering and our efforts
diminished. Only with Straun's arrival in the 2nd half did we begin
to show signs of the battle-hardened Westbury spirit of old as we
began to play with more purpose, vigour and skill. Injuries
to Tim, Ger (before the warm-up?!?) & to the Silver Fox left
us with a hastily re-jigged side and warranted a brave 3-4-3 formation.
A sloppy pass from the skipper allowed North Bristol to attack and
some shoddy tackling handed an early lead to our already relegated
oppo. Gareth Nicholls (another excellent performance) scored a well-taken
equaliser before Tezzer gave us a half-time lead. On came Straun,
making a much welcomed return to bolster the midfield. Sadly. our
habit of handing back possession seemingly at will, allowed North
Bristol back into the game and but for an excellently worked 8-man
set-piece short corner routine finished with aplomb by the grateful
skipper, we'd have been facing an embarrasing draw. One more training
session for the boys and one more game to go. Another win and it
will be a very good season for the newly promoted 2nd team. 5th
in this tough league will be something for us all to be proud of,
but the job isn't complete yet... A storming victory in the depths
of Cwmbran this coming weekend will round things off nicely. |
3rd
XI: The thirds had a bit of a shock against Bristol
University with a squad of 14 fit and energetic students, losing
by 8 goals to 3. However the job had already been done with top
spot achieved 5 games ago. Injuries and unavailability will have
had an impact on this game.

Wanderers:
Well done to the Wanderers who were still in with a chance of promotion
going into this match. They took on everything N Somerset could
throw at them and snatched a very late winner. It then depended
on the result between Robinsons 'C' and Firebrands 'D'. Robs won
to claim 2nd place and promotion, with the Wanderers finishing in
3rd place. Again injuries and unavailability in the last month have
meant that they played a number of games at less than full strength,
so a top three finish has to be seen as a great success. The Wanderers
can now plan to make it into the top two for next season. Chewie
and Tufty were the scorers. Tufty's comedy moment came when he had
'a chat' with the umpire during the game, but found himself having
to follow the umpire into a neutral corner as the umpire kept backing
away whilst beckoning Tufty to come towards him. It's a bit harsh
on Tufty to make him run around on the pitch and then have to walk
half a mile to get a 'ticking off!' Tufty's view: Saturday was a
great performance from a severely weakened team. We took the lead
early when Poker(!) found Woodward in the D with a great early ball
from the sideline. They equalised when one of their many young and
quick players ran through half our side. Second half we were magnificent.
The defence shut out just about everything, and we attacked with
great movement. Only thing missing was the goal! We had a few very
good chances but their keeper was having a blinder and when we did
get past him from two late corners a defender cleared off the line
(one was from point blank range when Si Andrews deflected the 'far
post' pass) Just as it seemed we would have to settle for a point
we drilled in our final short corner under the keepers armpit. |
Wizards&
Warriors: With all the issues solved last weekend, both teams
were just playing for pride in the return league match. The Wizards
were never able to get into top gear and the Warriors can justly
claim this as a moral victory! The Warriors had to play the first
20 minutes with 10 men. Smurf was called into action very early
after just 3 touches in his last two games. He was certainly the
busier keeper throughout the game and pulled off some great saves.
Joel Chase opened the scoring, then with a full compliment of players
the Warriors created the better chances and Smurf stopped them going
2-0 up with a 'one on one' save. Leading into the break the Wizards
got more control into their game, but found that the physical barrier
thrown up against them stifled their attacking opportunities. A
penalty stroke was squandered when it came back off the post! The
Wizards having previously had just one green all season, were shown
5 throughout the match. In the second half the Wizards pressed hard
and Mark Colton's short corner was steered in by Alan Christopher.
Just when it looked that the Wizards would get the upper hand, the
Warriors re-established their lead, this time with an Adam Holmes
goal. A second equaliser came from another short, this time Martin
Palmer's flick was guided in by Graeme Brown. Shortly afterwards
Mark Crofts wriggled his way round the D and slotted home to make
it 3-2 Wizards. The Warriors had 5 minutes left to restore the balance.
The ball fell to Joel Chase on the top of the D. His flick caught
the edge of Cocksy's stick and flew high into the net to much jubilation
from the Warriors. Both sets of defenders excelled in this game,
Tim Palmer, Cocksy and Tim Denner for the Wizards and Will Enderby,
AJ, Dave Ratcliffe and Alex Payne for the Warriors. The Warriors
finished the league season with a three game unbeaten run.

Widgets: The
Widgets gave N Somerset a close run game. Going down 3-1 with Dave
Money getting the goal the Widgets staged a comeback in the last
15 minutes with a Brian Nichols goal to close in to 3-2 behind.
Despite some good attacks they couldn't squeeze an equaliser. |

XI: Our recent run of good form was fully tested against a Cardiff
already league champions. The first 15 minutes saw Cardiff dominate
possession without really creating too many clear cut opportunities,
the best chance hitting the top of the post. We worked ourselves
slowly into the game, regularly gaining 10 meters as Cardiff complained
about decisions. Our best chances in the first half fell to Mason,
the keeper getting a faint touch to a trade mark scoop ("it
was traveling") and Neller, who topped a clear shot from the
top of the D. After
half time the game opened up and both sides had chances to win it.
Kinger played a blinder, making 3 excellent saves. Overall this
was one of our best team performances, superb work rate, lots of
pace and skill, defensively strong (no shorts conceded) and good
discipline in the face of top drawer Cardiff whinging. |

XI: Griff writes: We had our furthest away game
this week, a trip to Yate on what can only be described as a lovely
spring afternoon. We dominated the game with possession and at times
played very well but at times we were defeated by the pitch. We
didn’t all adjust to playing on a bouncy pitch which bought
memories (for more senior members of the team) of playing on grass
pitches where it is important to play with a straight stick, the
good news is that the pitch is being re-laid in the summer. We also
lacked a cutting edge, to be honest we have had this problem since
securing the championship (save for the Robs game which was a matter
of pride). Goals in the first half were from Tony Webster from a
short corner and Nathan Walkey. Andy Griffin added a third in the
second half from a short corner. The final score was 3 -1. Another
good team performance.

Wanderers:
The wanderers found Bristol UWE, the bottom team a tough nut to
crack. Neither side ever really got control of the ball in what
was generally a scrappy half. Johan Lewis and Reston Smith were
the pick of the side in the first half. The Wanderers always look
dangerous at short corners, but today their touch was missing and
chances weren't taken. The second half saw the visitors take the
lead. This actually proved to be the incentive for the Wanderers
to play more positively. Inside a minute their best move of the
match saw Tufty's shot hit the woodwork and Doug Scott sweep in
the rebound, reverse stick into the roof of the net. Not long later
the same two players created the winner. Doug Scott powered his
way through, laid the ball left to Tufty. The return pass saw Doug
slide his shot in at the near post. Again Johan and Reston were
on song and Alex Taylor did a lot of running and harrying to keep
pressure on Bristol. It still took a sharp, reflex save at the near
post from Paxo to preserve the lead. Steve Puetz and Tim Denner
showed up well in defence and their was good support from the whole
team as their confidence grew in the second half. |
Wizards:
The Wizards secured their place as CHAMPIONS of Division 2 with
another outstanding performance against O Bristolians. Alan Christopher
started it when the ball was flashing across at the far post, Alan
swung his stick one handed, made an excellent contact send the ball
past the helpless keeper for a 1-0 lead. The Wizards stepped up
their control of the game. Poker's long ball found Charlie Knight.
Charlie surged forward like Moses with his opponents stepping back
like the Red Sea. he reached the 'D' untouched and unleashed an
unstoppable shot into the far corner. After the break, there was
more of the same. Mark Colton, Cocksy, Andy Cameron and Poker were
in complete command of their half of the pitch. Charlie, Croftsy,
Dom Harris and John Ludley shared the midfield duties and were moving
the ball around superbly. John Ludley carved out the third goal,
his chipped pass was volleyed into the roof of the net by Martin
Palmer. The show was completed when the skipper took the ball off
the pads from Croftsy shot to slide in number four. Well done the
Wizards, another quality game and a bottle of Champagne shared by
a jubilant team.

Warriors: This
was a make or break game for the Warriors who needed a win to keep
Firebrands out of reach and safe from relegation. O Bristolians
started the stronger side and were well on top for the opening ten
minutes when Sam Banting had to be at his best and Steve Alger turned
one off the line. Then the tide turned and it all went well for
the Warriors, when Rob Hughes cut across the 'D' from the right,
after a long run and struck a brilliant reverse stick shot into
the roof of the net. Joel Chase added a second not long later, but
O Bs pulled one back. It was then the combination of James Pope
and Bomber Harris who created the third goal. Bomber moved the ball
forward, laid the ball off to James Pope. James cut in from the
right and set up Bomber for a sweep in at the near post. Having
got on top the Warriors could not get the vital killer goal in the
second half and O Bs pulled two goals back to square the game at
3-3. The Warriors finished on a high note when Adam Holmes struck
the winning goal. Well done the Warriors winning against O Bs third
team.

XI: Meaks speaks: The firsts looked to continue their recent good
form against a Uni side who had won the first fixture earlier this
season. It quickly became apparent that having last saturday off
and a poor turnout at training had slowed both thought and body
and we looked off the pace. We did create the better opportunities
in the first half, a swing and a miss from Mace with only the keeper
to beat and a missed PS from Frosty, after he had been tripped from
behind when clear on goal, left it 0-0 at halftime.
We came out of the blocks in the
second half and started to gain the upper hand, restricting the
uni side to breakaways. A slick short corner routine (you don't
see that very often in a 1sts match report) finished with Frosty
slipping the ball past the keeper to put us 1 up. Straight from
the restart, Shads blasted the ball past a stationary keeper, 2
up. We had a third in 10 minutes after Neller scooped our second
stroke of the afternoon just over the keeper. He claimed he had
already sent the keeper the wrong way, just by using his eyes. After
that we played like idiots, giving the ball away too easily and
the Uni pulled 2 goals back. Kinger also made some good saves to
keep us in front. Fortunately when some decisions started to go
against them their discipline went, the umpires had had enough and
there were 3 yellow cards for verbals towards the end of the game.
Frosty flicked his second, our fourth in the last few minutes to
make the game safe . A scrappy game, not one for the crowd but now
3 wins on the bounce for the 1s. |

XI: Sliders says: The crock skipper, watching
from the sidelines nursing with yet another wound, experienced a
roller coaster of emotions as the 2nds came through a potentially
tricky fixture against a gutsy Uni side. We
were poor early on: lacking shape, energy and composure. Gradually
we found our feet though - the passing became crisper and with TC
& Gary swapping roles the shape returned. Terry and Gareth were
flawless, Gareth joining the 2's after a string of man-of-the-match
3rd team performances and Terry continuing his awesome form from
last week's trek to Leominster.0-0 at half time. We started the
2nd half strongly but as is common with Westbury sides, we conceded
a breakaway goal and were up against it... bloody students. What
a response though. JPS and TC were instrumental in our revival and
our reply was immediate. A well rehearsed (ahem) 'set-piece' short
corner saw Tim barge his way onto the ball and coolly bring us level.
Within minutes we had a penalty flick - I can't remember why, but
I was very happy to see TC give us the lead. We were awesome to
a man for the last 20 minutes, with our defence holding strong with
Bees, Ger, Platform and Coatesy all making a string of cracking
tackles and Clintus Shoutalotatus kept out whatever the students
threw at him. Father-to-be Moondog had the final say by combining
well with TC and slotting home the 3rd. Shame the lovely Nicki Moon
missed both the goal and his gay celebration. It all brought a tear
to the skipper's eye...Well done gents. Far from perfect early on
but resolute and determined thereafter. A great comeback from a
goal down and a joy to watch. Where was the vice captain though...?

XI: Griff writes: A game where we dominated with
possession and territory. However UWE played 10 men behind the ball.
We unfortunately could not break them down and often found that
the D was too crowded. We were one down to a (interesting,) short
corner. That was there only real attack of the game. The game cost
Ron £ 3.33 per touch. It was very frustrating in the second
half (Dave Holliday and Mrs Walkey were very frustrated supporters
and no doubt if asked will give their opinion). Nathan Walkey scored
a well deserved equaliser. It was a disappointing result but the
effort of the team could not be faulted.

Wanderers:
The Wanderers were up against Old Bristolians who had Richard Purchase
in their side who CV includes National League and National appearances.
He dragged flicked a stunning goal, although Tufty felt he countered
that goal with a scorching flick of his own from a short corner.
The Wanderers were always going to find it hard and were never able
to get a firm hold on the game. O Bs scored early on and at regular
intervals until they reached 8. Alex Taylor scored once and Tonka
made it 8-3 with a short corner goal in time added on for the corner
to be completed. O bs were well organised and too strong for the
Wanderers on the day. |
Wizards:
The Wizards gave N Bristol a master class in passing, possession
and devastating finishing. Alan Christopher struck first and Graeme
Brown a few minutes later. Alan went on to complete a first half
hat-trick, the second two were the result of long passing plays.
This was an aspect of the game that the Wizards impressed throughout
the game. Dom Harris, Mark Crofts and Charlie Knight were in impressive
form, Charlie in particular was spraying quality ball around with
ease. By half time the Wizards were 7-0 up, with 3 of the goals
coming in about the same number of minutes. Mark Crofts snapped
up two goals and Martin Palmer scored with is first touch in the
game. There was no let up in the second half and Mark Crofts deservedly
got his hat-trick goal. Martin Palmer scored three more to reach
4 goals, Mark Crofts and Dom Harris put it the telling passes. Mark
Colton popped in two from short corners to bring the total up to
13. In the final seconds N Bristol earned a penalty stroke to get
a consolation goal. The defence of Cocksy, Cameron and Poker were
well in control and Smurf probably had to pay £5.00 per touch.
This was a superb performance and three of the six points needed
to win the division.
