Comment: Another quality inter-club game took place on the water. The team in blue opened up a 2-0 lead with two goals from Moonie and looked to be the dominant side. The Reds, playing with 4 forwards were stretched at the back. Goody pulled one back when the umpire played a good advantage when the ball was lifted into his body, but TC made it 3-1. Slider then pounced to put the blues 4-1 ahead. Tony Webster struck to bring the score back to 4-2 and then produced a cheeky reverse flick to make it 4-3. In the second half Andy Cooper put the blues further ahead with a clever scooped shot past Kinger, Village scored with a disputed goal and TC added his second whilst Tony Webster scored 2 more to make it 7-5 in favour of the blues, with time rapidly running out. The reds and greens then upped the tempo and a flurry of goals became an avalanche. Martin Palmer had a simple tap in followed by a hotly contested goal when Goody's hit bounced across the D before being steered in at the far post. Goody then stuck his second of the game followed by Ger Openshaw's thundering shot. To complete the rout Deaks appeared from full back to guide the ball home to make it 10-7. For those of us who play at the lower end of the club it was great to play alongside skillful players who help you raise your game. This was no exhibition match, it was fiercely contested and if you were wearing blue, it hurt to lose a game that you were in control of for 75% of the time. For the reds and greens it shows how quick break-aways can unsettle a side and help you build a winning score. Everyone competed to their maximum which made it a great game to be involved with. Thanks to Tony and Poker for arranging it.
Wanderers: The Wanderers (and guests i.e. Kinger and Webster) entertained Stroud 1st/2nd XI. Tufty told me immediately after the game that Stroud were by far the better side and looked very sharp going forward, yet it was the Wanderers who took a 3-0 lead in what was to be a high scoring game. The score moved on to 4-2, but with Stroud taking a competative hold on the game they worked their way back to 5-5. Chances were created at both ends in the final stages of the game. Just as time expired, the Wanderers earned a short corner. The ball was slipped to Tony Webster who drove it powerfully wide of the keeper for the winning goal. On a personal level, this completed Tony's hat-trick and took him to 42 goals for the season. Only the 4th Westbury player to pass 40. For the team it was win number 22 to complete a perfect season, something that has never been done before in the 80 years of the club's existence.
Veterans: The Veterans returned to competitive tournament play after many years (we used to run our own tournament and travel to Hereford for theirs) in the ladies club day. They notched up a win by 3-0 (10 minutes being the length of the game). John Ludley, Alan Christopher and Sparky were the scorers. Alan Christopher was in a scoring mood and hoping to attract votes from fellow Wizards for 'Wizard of the season'. He didn't disappoint and score 2 more in the next game against a Westberries '7'. There then followed a close encounter with George Banting's youth team when a Duncan Ogilvie goal was one of the two (perhaps three) crucial moments of the game. Cocksy missed a through pass, which he claimed was unreachable so he didn't chase it, leaving goalkeeper Stuart Horn to make his 'Champagne moment' of the game and the tournament, pulling of a superb save (his words not mine). In fact it was his only touch in all four games! The final game saw 7 tiring veterans against 10 'Amazons' where once again Alan (player of the year in waiting) Christopher scored the only goal. So the Veterans won the tournament (the previous best was a semi-final loss in their own competition many years ago at Passage Road). They won on the park, but also in their fanatasies when the young lady collecting the money for meal tickets, revealed that she was delayed because her bra and knickers had been hidden. This brought a flush to the faces of the veterans and probably a lot of strain on their pace makers as their over active (and probably underused) libidos were brought into play. The vets were very appreciative of the organisation of the tournament by Westberries. The question is, will they be invited back to defend their title next year?

The Wanderers 'came of age' with their 21st straight victory of the season. Add to that the 4 wins from the end of last season, that makes it 24 in a row. Gareth Nichols also had the 'key to the door' with a 4 goal performance. Further support came from Ben Jones (2), James Lampey and Ian Hipwell. A comprehensive win that shows how strong the Wanderers have become during the last year.

Not to be out done, the Wizards also recorded a big score. The regular Wizards were supplemented by Psycho, Mase, Webster and Kinger. Alan Christopher looked red hot on the right wing. His surging run from the half way line set Duncan Ogilvie up for the first of his 4 goals. Alan scored one himself with Tony Webster and Mark Colton completed the scoring.

The final league match saw the Warriors at home to the Widgets. The Warriors raced to an early 2-0 lead. The first goal came from a great run and powerful shot from Dom Harris. The second when Mike Harvey followed up Martin Palmer's short corner shot. The best scoring chance for the Widgets came from Joel Chase, who blazed his shot over the bar. The Warriors defence showed why they are one of the outstanding defences in any division, few have conceded less goals! The Widgets too put in a solid performance at the back and throughout the game few clear cut chances were carved out by the Warriors. The best move of the second half saw Will Enderby feed Pete Thomas, who slipped the ball to Sam Parker to score. The Widgets then had their best spell of the game and John Fox shot just wide. The Warriors, particularly down the right had good possession but never really looked likely to prize open the Widgets back line. When the 4th goal came it was a through ball down the middle that found Pete Thomas who shot into the corner of the goal. Dom Harris had an outstanding game causing all sorts of problems with his direct and forceful running. Brian Nichols commented that Chris Millman had a good game, making it difficult for him to mark because he made a lot of lateral runs. For both teams to be successful next season they need to be able to get to the bye line and provide accurate crosses, neither side did that today and most of the 45 degree passes to the D were snapped up easily by defenders. This was a good advertisement for the strength of the club, everyone worked hard, the Warriors had to dig out the win and the Widgets maintained the spirit and enthusiasm they have showed all season. The Firebrands result had not been posted at the time of writing, but it is safe to assume they won making the Warriors RUNNERS UP in only their second season of league hockey. This success has been achieved thanks to a brilliant defence who kept 10 clean sheets.

Westbury still managed to put out 5 teams on Saturday with another quality inter-club game. There was no quarter given with some crunching tackles and strong running. Worney (playing his second game of the day) had the unenviable task of marking Bomber. Kinger in the red & green goal was in brilliant form with some brave keeping as shots were blasted in at him from all angles. The red & greens had a lot of second half pressure but found themselves 2-0 down. Tony Webster had his easiest goal of the season with a simple tap in. Bomber pulled a goal back but the blue team held out as the blues pressed for an equaliser. (This game is NOT included on the score sheet).

Comment:
1st XI: Frosty scored 5 as the first team moved to 151 goals for the season. Chepstow's defence were made to suffer. Webster, Goody and JP added to their totals and there was a first goal for Slider at first team level. It just remains to be seen if Frosty can get the 5 goals needed to equal Dave Money's 52 in a season. Are there enough games left for him?
2nd XI:
3rd XI: The third team visited Cwmbran and lost 7-2. JPS and TC (Junior) got their names on the score sheet, but in attack terms the home team had the advantage. Sparky wasn't too down beat after this defeat, after all when our post league season opposition cry off at least it is the chance to have a run out on Saturday. These end of season games were often the way for young players to get a chance at a higher level. Sadly other clubs seem to stop once the league is over.
Wanderers:
Wizards: A somewhat mixed bag of Wizards recorded a victory with their team being drawn from across the club. The quality of Chris Poulsom, who can always be relied on to give 100% for whichever side he turns out for, shone through. His hat-trick decided the result.
Warriors: The Warriors secured promotion by traveling to Hereford and winning 4-0. Yet another clean sheet for the defence, that makes 9 league 'shut-outs'. Ben Jones came down from the Wizards to get his first hat-trick for the club. A source close to Poker revealed that his goal was an absolute 'cracker, (in fact the source was Poker himself!)
Widgets: The Widgets struggled to get their game under way. Minus an umpire and deprived of two players by illness there was a lot of frantic re-organisation at Coombe Dingle. Cocksy fortunately volunteered to umpire. Richard Gee was then seriously damaged in the warm up. He recovered to play a powerful game in the heart of the defence which battled stoically to keep out the Ross team, who sat third in the table. The Widgets were unlucky not to have a stroke for a stick tackle (on me). Dave Holiday, Marcus Pyne and Paul Pritchard worked hard to win the midfield battle. Joel Chase showed some good touches on the right wing and John Fox held the ball well in the first half, which ended 0-0. Ross scored from a defensive error, but the Widgets countered with a goal straight away. Paul Pritchard's powerful slap shot going in high up the net. Unfortunately Ross managed to turn their pressure into a second goal. This was another battling performance, from a makeshift team. Next season the Widgets will need turn enthusiasm and commitment, which they have loads of, into more attacking play.
Veterans: The Veterans were at home to St Ives from Cambridgeshire for a place in the quarter finals of the HA Plate. St Ives looked very sharp on the break and it took a lunging tackle from Jez Longden to stop them scoring as early as the first minute. St Ives had several early chances and were able to shut down the midfield giving very little time and space for Westbury to to create moves going forward. Against the run of play Westbury went 1-0 up from their first short corner. Tufty passed to Sparky who squared it for Alan Christopher to slide home. A few minutes later Tufty scored from the second short to put us 2-0 ahead. St Ives never gave up and pulled a goal back. Adie Dann gave another outstanding display in goal but the inevitable happened with St Ives not only equalising but then taking the lead. The visitors were well in command of the game, but with Sparky threading Ttufty a superb ball, Steve struck a magnificent equaliser to the delight of the large crowd. There were some unusual umpiring decisions during the game, but there was no doubting the quality of the opposition who scored the winner with a well taken shot. Westbury worked hard throughout the game, but were unable to control the midfield and were hurried into a lot of passes that didn't find their man. St Ives looked very quick when they broke forward and were well worth their win. We were well entertained at the 'Vic' afterwards. We can now look forward to next season when Tony Webster will join the OAPs in the vets!

Comment:
1st XI: The first team rounded off their league campaign in style, thumping in another 7 goals to bring their season's tally to 142. Bomber notched a hat-trick with Shadwell, JP, Webster and Mase completing the scoring. At one stage they were playing with 9 men due to temporary suspensions. Lydney, who needed to win to claim the 5th promotion spot for next year's restructured league must have been up for the game, but like everyone before them they were unable to restrain the free scoring forwards. Frosty didn't get amongst the goals, but it just shows that goals can come from anywhere. So Premier 2 will be the challenge next year. It is interesting to note that Marlborough are runners up in Prem 2 having gone from North 1 in successive seasons. Westbury have followed the same pattern, however the expectation will be for a third championship in a row.
2nd XI: The seconds had an unusual game with delays either side of Clint's departure and return for a technical offence. Moonie padded up, saved one short corner, but could not keep out a second one enabling N Wilts to take a lead. On returning to familiar ground up front Moonie then proceded to score a superb equaliser from a very narrow angle. His victory celebration included running to the half way line and doing a football style knee slide! This turned out to be the final score in a game that Ger described as somewhat agricultural.
3rd XI: The thirds came up against several Westbury old boys. Adie Daniels, who still turns out for us at veteran level, was in brilliant form stopping some incredible close range shots. At half time the thirds could easiliy have been three or four ahead. Their short corner team of Welding and Taylor were missing, and the 9 firsts half short corners came to nothing. There was a welcome return for Tom Colquhoun after a 5 week absence with a broken thumb. The thirds played with skill and tenacity against a N Bristol side that looked well organised with players with first team experience. Former Westbury stiker Lyndsey Cumberbatch snapped up a goal after a great save by Pete Murphy. A further 9 short corners were gained but none of them looked like going in. N Bristol spent most of the second half defending, leaving just 2 men up front. The thirds found it difficult to break down their defence. The effort put in was 100%, but the inability to convert at least one short corner ended in a 1-0 defeat.
Wanderers: The Wanderers took a weakened team to Newent to achieve their 18th win of the season. They found themselves 1-0 down and had to spend a spell with Nick Evans sidelined for an offence that was difficult to decipher. Worney was blown up after one attack hit a defender's foot because: "He almost fell over when he was running!" Goals from George Banting, Tufty and James Holliday established a 3-1 lead. Newent pulled a goal back to make it a nervous finish, but the Wanderers held out to get that record breaking win. No other team in the club has achieved this distinction. They also finished on 99 league goals for the season and have scored 120 in all matches.
Wizards: The Wizards were unable to match last seasons glory after their impressive championship season, and found themselves relegated today. A 3-2 defeat at Hereford consigned the Wizards to a quick return and a chance to regroup for next season. At one stage they found themselves not far from the top of the table, but with only 1 draw and 7 defeats since Christmas, they were unable to maintain that position.
Warriors: The Warriors continued to put pressure on Firebrands E with another closely contested game against Gloucester. The game was opened up by one of the rare decisive moves when Jon Bower split the visiting defence with a superb ball to Marcus Pyne, who hammered in a fine goal. Rob Hughes scored his first goal for the club just before half time. The second half was rather disjointed with chances being spurned. The Warriors lacked the ability to get to the goal line and cut in to create the best scoring chances. Their success this season has been down to their magnificent defence, who have kept 8 'clean sheets' in league matches. Once again Brian Nichols was the picture of composure at centre back and Will Enderby put in another strong performance in closing down attacks on the left side of midfield.
Widgets: The Widgets were understrength, with Sean Lemoir having to take on the goalkeeping duties. The left back was recruited the night before at the Panto. Dave Ratcliffe provided the only experience in midfield and Jay Lutwych was once again asked to fill in at left midfield. Jay in fact had the first scoring chance of the game but was denied by the home keeper. Cheltenham, with a vastly changed side from the veterans who played earlier in the season, built up a 4-0 lead by attacking down the right flank. Tim Palmer and Brian Callis were dominant but lacked support to keep out all the Cheltenham attacks. The home team's contribution to 'help the aged' was to knock Brian Callis over 3 times, the first when the forward dropped his shoulder into him to send him flying. In true Westbury style, the Widgets continued to play in the right spirit and not get drawn into a physical game. In the second half a superb steal and attack down the right by Martin Palmer set up Joel Chase for his first goal for the club. Cheltenham then scored two more, but with their first and only short corner late in the game Paul Pritchard's second shot was successful. In fact the Widgets drew the second half.
