XI: The
seconds finished the season with a close win by the odd goal in
five, this after falling behind in the first minute. |
Wizards:
The Wizards
completed the season with win number 13. Chris Poulsom took his
club total into 3 figures with his first goal to join the ‘hundred
club’. |
Warriors: The
Warriors were saved from going 2-0 down in their final league game
by an incredible head high stick save on the line by Tom Counsell.
Austin Sheppard was probably the unluckiest man on the field.
On another day he could have score 5, 6 or even 7 from his shorts.
He came up against a keeper in incredible form. Sam Parker scored
a late equaliser. The Warrior’s disappointing 5 game run without a win meant
they finished in mid table taking only 2 points from their final
12. |

Comment:
Swindon ones and threes cried off, perhaps they don’t like driving down the
M4! The seconds and Wanderers made the journey in the opposite direction.
|
2nd
XI: The
twos lost 2-1, Duncan’s text message said that
the scorer was Griffin. The Wanderers were also
away at Swindon and the text message said Griffin 3, so I presume that our
club captain performed again getting a first ever hat-trick. (Which
turned out to be exactly as presumes) |
Wizards:
The Wizards
welcomed Simon Lloyd back to the fold and he responded with two
goals. That makes it 12 straight wins, and they remain unbeaten
over 17 games. The last time they lost was on 15th November
at Lansdown. |
Warriors: The
Warriors travelled to Cardiff. For the second week in
a row they conceded goals in the opening minutes of each half. The
team put up a spirited display and scored with a short corner at
the end of full time to make the score 3-2. Brian Nichols and Tim
Palmer gave solid performances in defence and Sam Parker looked
back to his early season form. Limbo’s running caused the main threat
up front. Paul Pritchard had to don the pads and made a couple of
good saves against a lively Cardiff side. The penalty stroke
that should have been awarded to us might have made it an even closer
finish! |

Wanderers:
The Wanderers won against Chippenham
5 - 1. Steve Millman acknowledged full credit to Chippenham for their part in an excellent and good spirited
game, he also took his season’s total to 30. |
Wizards:
Chris
Poulsom reported that theWizards won 6 - 2 away
at Stroud. He notes “I got 3 (1 x PF), Lutwych,
not sure who else, still a bit dazed from Friday night!! I thought
it was 5 - 2 but 6 - 2 was on the board
in the Duck.” Duncan confirmed that
6 goals had been scored. Mark Colton and James Perace-Smith
completed the scoring. |
Warriors: The
Warriors put up a good performance in the league match at Leominster. They conceded a goal after
2 minutes but equalised before half-time. They then conceded one
minute into the second half. The experience of the Leominster first team player was the
key to their victory. We pressured them and James Lampey
caused the type of problems to their defence that we have been missing
for several weeks. Brian Nichols (suffering from a throat infection)
earned the man-of-the-match award. |
Widgets: George writes The Colts (mainly 12-15 year olds with a few old
guys to make up the numbers) drew 1-1 with North Somerset (all 15-17 year
olds). Nichols G. the scorer, with young Webster having a potentially
winning goal disallowed on the final whistle. Enjoyable game, very
good performances by the younger players, many playing their first
11 a side game on a full size pitch. |

1st
XI: The first wrapped up their highly successful league campaign
with a fine display of hockey against a Lansdown
team needing points to finish runners up. The first were all over
their opponents who were rarely able to mount any sort of significant
attacks. A combination of missing James Frost, James Goodman and
Dave Harris who have scored 50 odd goals, some bad luck in front
of goal and some inspired goalkeeping by the visiting goalkeeper.
At half time the score was 0-0, but possession was something like
90% - 10%. When the goal did come it was ‘a cracker’. Tony Webster
in a two minute spell earned a green card for explaining the advantage
rule to the umpire, give Tommydom a bit of stick for
not passing to him and then struck a superb reverse shot to put
the firsts in front. Chris Poulsom moved
one nearer to his ton with a shot that took a deflection and bobbled
over the line. Rich Deakin, Phil Haslett and Paul Mason were at the top
of their game in a very good team performance. Tom Colquhoun completed
the scoring. |
2nd
XI: The
seconds played their rearranged match against Neath.
After weathering Neath’s opening attacks the twos were equal to
the task with Warren Smith being a tower of strength in the middle
of the park. They were unlucky when a shot cannoned back into play
off the post and then suffered a goal against during a period in
the game that was slightly against the run of play. A Neath
forward played a square pass behind his body to a team-mate who
slapped it in. The team were never out-played, but conceded two
further goals. |
3rd
XI: The
thirds played away at Bridgwater and found themselves 2-0 down.
They staged a spirited come back to tie the game at 2-2. They had
several chances to sneak a winner but had to settle for their first
draw of the season. |
Wanderers:
The
Wanderers waited for North Wilts who never materialised. Perhaps
they were playing in a different space/time continuum! |
Wizards:
The Wizards
were successful against Bridgwater winning by the odd goal in seven.
Duncan Ogilvie and Neil Callis, both scored twice
in their race for the Wizard’s leading scorer trophy!
|
Warriors: The
Warriors took a 2-1 lead against Old Bristolians
with another thumping short corner from Austin
Sheppard. Old Bristolians played half the match with a keeper (who was
a converted outfield player) spurning wearing any pads! He donned
the pads in the second half, but the Warriors who once again played
well in defence and midfield, were unable to pressure the D. Only
three short corners were earned, nullifying the advantage of Shep’s
striking prowess. Dave Ratcliffe, Will
Enderby and Brian Nichols were very noticeable
for the Warriors. Richard Gee made a number of excellent saves,
but in the end we were just not good enough up front to sneak a
result. O Bs are a well organised and skilful
side. We lost to the champions in both games by 3-2 pushing them
close, but not quite close enough. |

Comment:
It was
business as normal again this week with the 10th unbeaten
Saturday. The 30 goals scored on the day puts the total goals scored
this season at 499. A new club record.
|
1st
XI:The firsts visited Yatton
& scored ten without reply. James Frost scored a ‘magnificent
7’ which equals his last year’s goal tally and takes his club total
to 103. The firsts also passed their ton for the season. |
2nd
XI: The
seconds were held to a home draw by North Wilts and that is two
points that they could ill afford to drop. |
3rd
XI: The
thirds were back to form with Gavin Clifton back from injury. Gavin’s
4 goals takes him to 36. Can he reach 44 the third team record set
by Dave Money? His goal scoring record this year is testimony to
the attacking flair of the team he is playing in. Steve Carter told
me that the score was a little flattering because they had eleven
shots at goal with ten them going in! |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers
made the journey to Hereford and scored 5 without reply and then
took on Clevedon on Sunday. Our roving
reporter Steve Millman writes: I watched the game on Sunday. Our goals
were scored by Geoff Rickard and Jamie Dann, which gave us a 2-0
victory from open play! All 5 Clevedon
goals were scored by the same player from a very impressive short
corner routine. We took the lead but were comprehensively outplayed
in the first half, Ade Daniels in goal preventing a rout. The second half was
much more even and was a credit to the battling qualities of the
team, and to the introduction of Matt Weston! Young Jamie Dann really
got into the game and showed some of his great promise. Saturdays
Wanderers performance was one of the best of the season. We took
advantage of meeting at 10.00 for what turned out to be a 14.00
game by practising our corners, and then scoring from 3 of them
including one very slick effort. Hereford have a very mean defence so to score 5 was outstanding. |
Wizards:
The Wizards
were happy to take all three points from Imperial, but very worried
that they would be out-drunk in the bar by their opponents. Imperial
(who will be relegated) were celebrating with the vigour of a team
at the other end of the table. James Lampey
made it 8 goals scored in 5 successive games.
|
Warriors: The
Warriors took an early lead at Firebrands (there may still be a
steward’s enquiry on the goal). Firebrands were a very skilful side
and took full advantage of the umpire’s generosity in the second
half. Their late equaliser coming from an aerial assault, with all
the defence expecting a whistle that never came. To a man everyone
at the back was very angry and it came as no surprise that the umpire
reached into his pocket for a yellow. Dom Harris, Will Enderby
and Brian Nichols shared the man-of-the-match award in a game where
the defence & midfield were all stars on the day. |
