1st XI: The first team lost 5-2 at Isca where Jonny Parish and Rich Hill were the scorers.
2nd XI: There were 21 minutes of added time as the seconds worked their socks off and kept their heads to earn a 2-1 win at home to Cheltenham with two well taken Tom Colquhoun goals. In the wise words of Hannibal Smith, the 2nd team think-tank 'love it when a plan comes together'... and sure did our plan work this week! After several good performances and huge efforts from the team but with no points to show, it was time for a change. Out went the old 4-4-2 formation and in came a fresh 3-4-3 attacking formation that allowed us to play with greater confidence, allowed us to pressurise Cheltenham all over the pitch and resulted in us creating a hatfull of goalscoring opportunities. 3-4-3 probably won't suit us on all occasions, but this time it worked a treat! The forwards worked harder than ever, the midfield dominated possession and tackled well and our defence held firm and rarely looked troubled. Our 3-4-3 formation allowed the defence to play higher that usual cramping Cheltenham for time and space and forcing them to turnover the ball on many occasions. Crucially the 3-4-3 provided greater freedom to our forward line and meant we broke at pace and in numbers, creating more chances than the previous few games put together. Tom Colquhoun took both of his goals superbly with his second goal providing us with the cushion we needed to prevent the nerves setting in towards the end. The team also controlled themselves impeccably in a game that boiled over on numerous occasions. Cheltenham lost the plot all round the pitch and ended up with 3 players in the Sin-bin as the final whistle blew some 20 mins late. All the while, Westbury stayed calm and relaxed, none more so than Will Holmes. Top work lads; the hunger and commitment shown by everyone on Saturday should inspire us to push on up the league now. The Westbury spirit remains strong! Thanks also to the crowd for their support.
3rd XI: The thirds worked hard to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Wootton Bassett. Jonathan Elms worked the ball into the D and played it to Bees, who had surged forward from sweeper to tuck the ball under the keeper. A good spell of Westbury pressure saw Nathan Walkey flick the ball in to equalise. Wootton Bassett looked a well organised side who moved the ball around well. They went 3-2 up early in the second half and went on to won 5-3. James Pearce-Smith got the third Westbury goal.
Wanderers: The Wanderers away, middle of the table match with Bristol & West finished with a 2-0 home victory.
Wizards: The Wizards shared six goals with N Somerset to earn a point. John Ludley struck twice and Ben Lipfriend once.
Warriors: The Warriors should in future wear hooped shirts, wear masks across their eyes and carry their kit in a sack over their shoulders with the words SWAG clearly written in capital letters, viz. Burgler Bill, because this match was stollen from the youthful Yate team that had at least 20 short corners. The home team had all the play, 75% possession to Westbury's 25%. The Warriors found it hard to keep the ball and get their forwards in the game. This should not detract from the magnificent defending that kept out the impressively skillful home forwards. Jon Jarvis (5 man-of-the-match votes) was an impassable barrier and Jez Longden (6 votes) covered avery inch of his own 25 yard zone, ably supported by Mssrs Ratcliffe, Wise and Cooper. Ten minutes before half time the Warriors had their ONE short corner. It slipped under Jez's stick. Dave Holliday backed up and slipped it left to Pete Thomas who hammered it through the keeper's legs for the only goal of the game. ONE shot ONE goal!!!!!
Widgets: The Widgets nearly pulled off a second successive shock. Away to top team O Bristolians they took an early lead. Austin Sheppard's short corner strike was going wide, but Chris Millman cleverly deflected it into the goal. O Bs found they had a game on their hands and finally managed to break through with an equaliser near the end. Another top class result for the Widgets who remain unbeaten in 2009!

Match comments
1st XI: The first team were put under constant pressure by a strong running, constantly rotating Bristol University team. The students were unable to find the net in the first half and Westbury's one chance from Pat Haynes' through ball was steered just wide by Joe Thomas. The University found their scoring touch and netted five times, whilst the first could only manage a consolation from Neil Richardson..
2nd XI: The trip to Leominster ended in a 4-1 defeat for the seconds. Duncan Armsby scored the Westbury goal.
3rd XI: The thirds came unstuck by a fast raiding City of Bath team. Three quick goals put them in the driving seat. Steve Millman reported that the thirds still played well, but having pushed up into the City of Bath half, the speed of the home attack caused all sorts of problems. Bath scored seven time with Steve Millman getting Westbury's consolation goal.
Wanderers: The Wanderers had an epic encounter with Firebrands. With the game tied at 2-2 and time running out, the Wanderers pushed up and in a last minute goal mouth melee a penalty stroke was awarded. There seemed some hesitation on who was going to take it, but up stepped skipper James Holliday, and with all the pressure on, he coolly placed his flick low and to the keepers left. The final whistle went just moments after the restart for a well earned 3-2 win.
Wizards: The Wizards won 2-1 at Bristol & West with Jamie Cranfield scoring twice.
Warriors: The Warriors had a return friendly against Yate. Having lost the away match 4-1, the Warriors won the home game by an identical score. Dave Holliday, Dom Harris and Chris Millman were the dominant force in midfield and Pete Thomas, despite having a stinking cold, had his best game of the season. Westbury were hungry for a goal, but a clearance off the line from a short and some good goal keeping denied them the lead. That was until Andy Cooper delivered the perfect free hit from the right wing a minute before the interval. Martin Palmer used the pace of the ball to find the far corner before the keeper could move. Dom Harris was in great striking form, getting some good practice from short corners. He had a second half one luckily deflected round the post by a defender. He then opted to try a passing movement around the D from the next short. Yate dealt easily with it and in seconds they had the ball in the Westbury net to square the match 1-1. It didn't take long for the Warriors to go ahead. Dom Harris had a great run down the middle, Dave Holliday found the telling passt and Martin Palmer nudged the ball under the keeper. Dave Holliday was again the provider for number three. He found James Pope in the D. James kept his head, went round the keeper and flicked the ball past two defenders. The final goal saw James Pope cutting in down the right bye-line. As he attempted to pull the ball back to his centre forward at the near post, he got a poke on the ball which flew towards the near post, hit the keeper and went in off of him. This was a fine team game and a well deserved win.
Widgets: The Widgets went into this game as the underdogs, facing a Somerset Gryphons side that were top of the table, and had run in fourteen goals the previous week! In the early minutes of the game Tony Webster struck twice. One was allowed and the other, a thundering short corner strike, was wiped out because the ball had not come of the D! The first half saw Gryphons press for an equaliser and it took a lot of good defending to keep them out. The second half saw the introduction of Harry Newington, and Gryphons just didn't know how to handle his pace. Mssrs Spencer, Ruxton and Alex Mason were on top in the midfield contest as Westbury pressed forwards. There were numerous chances to wrap the game up but the second goal would not come. When they did get the ball in the net, the Widgets found that the umpire had blown marginally before for a short corner. Adrian Napper, Jez Longden and Ernie Wise were marshalling their defence magnificently, and Jon Jarvis had to make a couple of save to earn his 5th ever clean sheet. At the final whistle the Widgets quite rightly gave a whoop of delight in pulling off what must be their best ever result in their not very long history. This was achieved by an outstanding team effort from everyone in the side. For the record the team line up was: Jarvis, Longden J, Napper, Ratcliffe, Wise, Ruxton, Spencer, Mason A, Newington, Clark, Ogilvie, Webster, Money

1st XI: The firsts got a cracking result at Gloucester winning 4-2, moving them to 10th place above Cardiff University and Bath Buccs. they are now one point behind Isca, and will be playing them in two weeks at Exeter. Joe Thomas notched a hat-trick and Andy Smerald got his first goal for the 1st XI.
2nd XI: The seconds had a strong line up against Bristol University, but fell to a single goal defeat.
3rd XI: Steve Millman reported that Bath Buccs didn't arrive because their 'charabanc' broke down!
Wanderers: A 3-1 win by the Wanderers at Weston puts them into 5th place in the division. Max Longden, Dave Wornell and Steve Millman were on target.
Wizards: The Wizards played well in their match against Frys with Clint Bryer making a welcome return between the posts. The game was still in doubt as the wizards pressed for an equaliser, but Frys scored a late second goal to win 2-0.
Warriors: The Wanderers took on top of the table O Bristolians and worked hard to contain the home side. The Warriors had the best of the first quarter, but O Bs scored from a short to lead 1-0 at half time. They added two quick goals, again from shorts at the start of the second half to lead 3-0. Heads could have dropped, but the Warriors stuck at their task and took the game to O Bs. The best the team could manage was to earn four short corners (there were no open play chances created). Dom Harris saw one well struck shot go wide, two were well saved by Steve Edge in the O Bs' goal and Mike Harvey picked up a rebound on the fourth and saw his push at the near post stopped on the line. O Bs got one more to win 4-0. Steve Puetz played well at sweeper and his defence kept out most of the O B attacks. George Minchin showed his promise as a player for the future. In the first half he passed back all the time, he listened to the half time advice and put in some very positive forward passes in the second.
Widgets: The Widgets had another 'returnee' in their ranks as Tony Webster made his long awaited comeback from injury. Playing Bristol UWE at Frenchay, the Widgets pulled off an excellent 2-1 win. Duncan Ogilvie continued his scoring run and Tony Webster celebrated his first game with the winner. This result moves the Widgets above the Warriors in the table!

Match comments
1st XI: The first team kept coming back in their match at Bristol & West in and end to end game that could of gone either way in the second half. Two goals from James Goodman was followed by a goal from Pat Haynes that tied it up at 3-3. Westbury looked very good going forward and saw a series of shots go just wide of the target. At the other end the defending was a little thin at times and it took some good saves by Andy Krebs to keep out the home forwards. Unfortunately a badly directed ball across the back gifted Bristol & West an easy goal. Westbury kept pushing forward and chances were made but not quite converted. Then came a penalty stroke, but James Goodman's flick went high and wide. The game finished up as a home win, but there was a lot of positive play going forward and it was good to see Stuart Blake and Straun Wilkins back in action at the top of the club.
2nd XI: The seconds had their game frozen out on the waterbase.
3rd XI: The thirds opened their game at Bristol & West when the 'Goal Machine' - Nathan Walkey got the vital touch following a goal mouth melee. Westbury had longs spells of possession, but were inconsistent in stringing three or four passes together, but worked well to get the ball back when they lost it. Tom Alger had a great run to the top of the D and fired in number two. Bristol & West counter this by snatching a goal back. A short corner found the injector at the near post who swept in in to reduce the half-time lead to 2-1. Westbury got the upper hand in the second half with Tom Alger getting his second goal and James Pearce-Smith adding to his season's tally. Steve Millman explained how Will Jones goal saw the ball pushed in at left defense (by Steve) Duncan Armsby moved the ball forwards and after several passes, Will Jones arrived from left back to score an excellent team goal.
Wanderers: The Wanderers defrosted the waterbase, whilst skipper James Holliday was away skiing. Skates and skis were not needed as the Wanderers constructed a 3-1 win against Bristol & West. Goals from Chris Poulsom, Tom Taylor and Geoff Rickard made it a good start to 2009 for Wanderers.
Wizards: The Wizards fell 1-0 down in their game against Bristol & West at Winterborne. A good team performance saw then equalise through Jack Chalk to earn a 1--1 draw and a good post Christmas workout.
Warriors: The Warriors took an early lead after Chris Poiulsom's storming run to the D, Martin Palmer thumping home the loose ball. Dave Holliday came agonisingly close to getting the second goal, but had his shot well saved. Dave Ratcliffe started the move that produced goal number two. Chris Poulsom worked the ball on and Mike Harvey finished it off. In the second half Chris hit a scorching shot to make it 3-0. The Warriors were well on top of the game with Dave Holliday in outstanding form in the middle of the park. Then came two well worked goals. Pete Thomas played a wall pass with Martin Palmer in the D and waltzed past a couple defenders to draw the keeper and slip it past him. Next it was a Joe Connelly/Palmer move that saw Joe play another wall pass at the top of the D that opened up a scoring chance. Joe, who had an excellent game, went to ground as he tried to flick the ball over the keeper. He recovered to his knees to cleverly flick home the rebound. This goal was the first of three that came in under ten minutes at the end of the game. Chis Poulsom was the architect of goal number six with a great run down the right and a cross that was finished of by Mike Harvey. Chris then got his second as the game reached the final minutes. Everyone in the Warriors played at the top of their game. The games was played in excellent spirit by both sides and excellently umpired by Martn Rees and Pete Farrell.
Widgets: The Widgets were in a mean mood in front of goal with Duncan Ogilvie grabbing a hat-trick. His second goal came from a Terry Watts run and a slipped pass from Terry. His hat-trick goal came from practically the same spot as he swept in a goal skillfully engineered by Paul Clark's great run and cross from the right. Dave Money put his scoring woes behind him and notched two goals himself. Chris Millman caught the eye with his work with the ball at right midfield in the second half. Harry Newington caused mayhem with his running down the left hand channel, but always seemed to end up with a reverse stick pull at goal rather than the open side thump at to get the goal he deserved..
Veterans: Twelve hardy souls turned out on Sunday morning at Failand against O Bs Vets and found the weather quite balmy compared to Saturday's chill! O Bristolians bossed the first 25 minutes of the half as the switched the ball around looking for the opportunity to make progress into the D. That was denied them by some outstanding defence by George Banting, Brian Nichols, Dave Ratcliffe and Steve Alger. O Bs managed just two shots, one stopped by Ed West (guesting in goal) and one that went wide right. Against the run of play, with what must have been Westbury's first real foray into the home D, Pete Thomas skillfully eluded his marker on the left wing and sent a perfect square pass to Paul Clark on the right hand side of the D. Paul picked his spot and fired in his first goal this winter with a scorching shot. Great play down the right almost saw Pete Thomas get a second goal but he didn't quite get the contact he wanted from Steve Millman's cross. The second half was much more even. Westbury twice had the ball in the net but John Ludley's effort had been blown prior to his shot for a short corner and Croftsy netted with the faintest of touches from his foot as he maneuvered himself to shoot only for it to be disallowed. Mark was also desperately unlucky not to get a goal from Steve Millman's short corner shot. The ball hit his foot just outside the post rather than his stick a little closer in. As is the way with these things O Bs, who were avery good side and fully rested, having not played the day before, sneaked a goal from close range with five minutes to go. The veterans played extremely well. Steve Millman and John Ludley were full of non-stop running, Spark was influential in midfield and Chris Millman played his first vets game and was unlucky not to get a goal when the keeper managed to block his close range push. Team: West, Banting G, Ratcliffe D, Nichols B, Alger S, Sparks, Ludley, Crofts, Millman C, Millman S, Cark, Thomas P.
