Comment: A good day for the teams in promotion contention. The firsts and Wanderers had excellent wins to maintain their top positions in their divisions. The seconds and thirds remain in close to the leaders in their divisions and the Warriors had a big 6 pointer and stay on track for a show down with Firebrands.
1st XI: The 1st XI were back to full strength for their crucial top of the table encounter with Robinsons, but it was the visitors who scored first. The match was a hard fought affair between two teams who are used to winning. The firsts came out ahead by the final whistle with a good 5-2 win and cemented their place at the top of Prem 3.
2nd XI : The seconds scored an impressive 5-3 win against Whitchurch, their 8th successive win of the season with Jon Jarvis getting a hat-trick.
3rd XI : The thirds had a close result in their match at Shepton Mallet and came away with a 2-1 win.
Wanderers: The Wanderers were also involved in a hard fought victory in their local derby with W Glos. Andre Norton was outstanding in driving the team forward, but it was Steve Millman's technical skills that carved out the win. His 4 goals consisted of 2 short corner strikes and 2 penalty strokes. That makes it 14 league wins out of 14 and 19 successive wins.
Wizards: The Wizards lost their match at Cheltenham but also lost skipper Duncan Ogilvie with a fractured finger. (Similarities with my recent injury 1) same type of break 2) same opposition)
Warriors: The Warriors had a potential banana skin of a game. If they slipped up against 3rd placed Ross they would have lost the opportunity to go for the league title. A sloppy first half was put right by a better second half performance in which Will Enderby excelled. Charlie Duggan scored with a powerful shot after a great run to make the game safe.
Widgets: The Widgets were without 8 players who played against the Warriors so well in December, yet everyone who played today played their socks off restricting Gloucester to 4 goals. Brian Callis, Andy Fox and John Fox had good games. Marcus Pine had a strong debut game at centre half and Martin Palmer turned play maker for a change in the midfield, whilst Chris Millman gave everything in his first full game for 5 years.
The Under 15s took part in two 7-a-side matches at Yate last weekend. George Banting was very pleased that they beat the previously unbeaten Weston U15s by 3-2. A second win was also notched up against N Somerset. The successful squad were: Sam Banting; Will Glynn; Max Crew-Gee; Greg Slater; Lloyd Davis; John Fox; Will Holmes. The team have been drawn from six different schools.

Match comments
1st XI: The first team brushed outside the freezing rain and Torbay in a comprehensive home win. Two early goals by James Frost established a good lead as the temperature dropped to about 2 degrees. Towards half time came a flurry of goals, the first a superb four man move finished off by Tony Webster. At half time the firsts were leading by 6-0. Credit to Torbay, they never gave up trying and for a long period in the second half they defended with great determination. However, the roller-coaster of continuous attack by the Westbury front line finished up with two more goals and a few near misses. James Frost completed his hat-trick, the middle goal setting a new first team goal scoring record. Next week is the top of the table clash with Robinsons.
2nd XI : The seconds seemed very pleased with their win at UW Swansea especially as the home encounter was a close run affair. Playing on a new water based pitch in Swansea the seconds were clear winners by 4-1. They are 3rd in their division, equal on points with the second placed team.
3rd XI : The thirds started well in their match against Gloucester, hoping to avenge the defeat they suffered away, earlier in the season. There then came a period when they were unable to dominate and Gloucester came into the game. The attack was too left sided and needed more variety. With a minute to go to half time, a quick attacking free hit was poorly directed. Gloucester broke away, earned a free hit and turned that into an equaliser. Andy Pound was not at all pleased as he walked to the opposite end for the half time team talk! The second half was all Westbury, with Gloucester limited to just a couple of shots. Alan Spark's team controlled the play and were well worth their win. 3-1 could have been a couple more, but the three points were most welcome.
Wanderers: The Wanderers and the Wizards slogged out a match that was like two heavy-weight boxers slugging each other punch for punch until one of them fell over. The first half was pretty even. Steve Millman was heard to shout shortly before half-time "At last a bit of hockey!" There were not many passing moves, but then the conditions were very cold and wet. The goals the Wizards let in were as much due to defensive mistakes as it was to attacking guile. The first goal was a muffed short corner. A defender elected to touch the ball that hadn't gone out of the 'D' (it was around the penalty spot), he mistimed it. With the ball now 'live' Steve Millman flicked it home. On the balance of play it would seem that the Wizards actually had more short corners, but both sides were not quite sharp enough in the D. The Wanderers eventually turned their position as league leaders into form on the pitch as they ran in more goals in the second half. Again some sloppy passing from the Wizard's defence set up a couple of goals. Nick Evans scored two on his return. Both teams were short of personnel and with the freezing rain, should not be judged too harshly for not putting the quality hockey that both sides are both capable of. The Wanderers reached their ton for the season and now have 101 goals.
Warriors: The Warriors had six Widgets in their side, against a Cheltenham side who looked very effective. The Warriors had to soak up a lot of pressure and Tom Counsell was a dominant figure at sweeper. Pat Tampkins and Brain Nichols worked solidly all match, and a word of praise for Andy Cooper, playing out of position at left back. The Warriors had 3 shots at goal in the first half and scored from all three. The first came from good work by Jamie Cranfield and Dave Holliday. Pete Thomas thumped home the cross. Tom Counsell slipped home the second from a short corner and Martin Palmer's superb run (as good as any from Dave Harris!) created a chance for Sam Parker to score just before the end of the half. Cheltenham pulled one back early in the second half, but Westbury immediately countered. A second short corner (we only had 2) saw Dave Holliday's shot rebound off the pads to Sam Parker, who 'roofed it'. This was a great performance, every one played above themselves to dig out a very good win. Sam Banting with two brilliant saves, stole the man-of-the match with Tom Counsell, Sam Parker and Dave Holliday a close second.

Match comments
1st XI: The first team triumphed at Ottery Crickets by three clear goals to continue their drive towards Prem 2. James Frost and Tony Webster were the goal scorers and have 63 of the 1st XI's 113 goals to their credit. James is closing in on the first team scoring record of 36 goals.
2nd XI : The seconds had a point to prove against Swansea Bay who beat them 8-3 in Swansea last October. This time it was the twos who were emphatic winners. 4-0 up by half-time they went on to score 6. Andy Pond was pleased with the clean sheet and was praised by his team mates for one blinding save from a short corner. Tom Colquhoun scored a hat-trick and took a little bit of pain in doing so. A sweeping move into the D enabled him to go round the keeper, wide on the right hand side of the D. With a narrow angle he shot at goal, the ball going in off a defender. However, he lost his footing and rolled over, his momentum taking him into the steel fence around the pitch. Swansea worked hard and were never out of the game, but were well contained in the second half.
3rd XI : The thirds had a tough game at Firebrands having lost 7-3 in October. This time they were always in the game. Each time Firebrands scored the threes equalised. Unfortunately they ran out of time to get the 4th equaliser and lost by the odd goal in 7. This result shows the improvement in their play and with a little more luck they might have claimed a point.
Wanderers: The Wanderers scored 8 against Gloucester last time out. This time they found a much more resilient Gloucester side. It was the visitors who dominated the play during the firsts half. Steve Millman hit a 'wobbly' short corner that sneaked in to give them the lead against the run of play. Ben Jones was dynamite in the home goal, pulling of a string of brilliant saves. Gloucester were awarded a penalty stoke which Ben finger tipped onto the post for a great save. The Wanderers were able to establish a 3-0 half time lead. Play was more even in the second half. This was a solid performance by the Wanderers who had strong performances going forward from Tom Taylor and Andre Norton. The Wanderers now have 95 goals in the bank, equaling last year's record...how about getting to the ton next week? Steve Millman is also close to the Wanderers record of 32 goals in a season (which I've held for 10 years) and there's no reason why he shouldn't get close to 60 goals this season!
Wizards: The Wizards gave second place Bristol University a scare by holding them until late in the game. One of the University goals came after a student's use of the feet out side the D was missed. The short corner that followed it was converted. Late in the game the University scored the winner. Will Halliday scored his first goal for the club.
Warriors: The Warriors turned in a much better passing game as they overcame a resolute N Bristol side. The Warriors were unable to convert their 6 first half short corners and should have turned round a few goals ahead instead of 0-0. In the second half Rob Hughes bravely challenged the goalkeeper and was booted into the air to earn a penalty stroke, which Martin Palmer duly converted. The second goal came from a skillful run by Sam Parker, who coolly waited on the right hand post, drew the defenders and put in a measured pass for a simple tap in at the far post. Dave Ratcliffe worked well down the right flank, and Tim Denner's covering in defence earned him the man-of-the-match award. The Warriors have only conceded 12 goals all season, 4 in one game. This is a testiment to their strong defence.
Widgets: O Bristolians couldn't raise a side so this must mean a 5-0 walk over for the Widgets. This is a shame, because it is a game they could have won for real!

1st XI: The first team entertained Marlborough the team that pipped them for the one promotion spot two years ago and went through Prem 3 like a dose of salts last season. The firsts were not at full strength but beat their prem 2 opponents by two clear goals. At one stage they were 5-1 up but Marlborough clawed back a couple of late goals. Next week the league restarts with a visit to Exeter.
3rd XI : The 3rds and the Wanderers , who were without a fixture, fought out a very competitive inter-club match. The Wanderers forced Andy Pound into a number of early saves, whilst Neil Moon was just off target with a diving effort at the other end. Terry Watts (guesting for the Wanderers) opened the scoring with a fine individual goal. The final result of 2-2 shows how well the Wanderers having been playing this season putting out a representative side plus Terry and Ger Openshaw. Both teams are playing well when their league campaigns restart next week. The 3rds are in a position to challenge for a top two or three slot. The Wanderers will be looking to go through the second half of the league unbeaten. The key to their success will be having a fully fit Tufty to knock in another 30 odd goals. (The goals in this game have NOT been added to the goal chart).
Warriors: The Warriors had a golden opportunity to win by a cricket score against a disorganised S Glos team. Former Westbury player Chris Evans is captain of their 3rd team and owned up that they arrive late and don't have the shape to contain opponents. They cramped the midfield and were guilty of a lot of stick tackling that was not blown up. Mike Harvey scored early on, and the home goalkeeper looked very suspect as two more goals trickled in by half time. The Warriors were sucked into playing the game down the middle, the halves and wingers were not consistently wide enough and passes were poorly executed. This resulted in a lot of lost possession. Dom Harris called it 'schoolboy errors' when he was on the bench. The supporters were a little under whelmed by the quality of play. Limbo slipped out of the cold into his car and read the paper. He missed the best part of the game when Mike Harvey, who was the best player on the pitch, put in three telling passes to the D which gave Gareth Nichols a hat trick in six minutes. There could have been a few more goals, but the goalkeeper woke up in the second half and made some good saves. Some sharper passing might have created more chances, never-the-less it is still 3 points towards the promotion push.
Widgets: The Widgets faced league leaders Firebrands, who revealed their heavy handed tactics from the start. Brian Nichols was harshly adjudged to have committed an offence. Brian was unaware which direction the hit was given and stood his ground thinking the hit was his. The opposing centre half immediately walloped the bal l and Brain rather than sportingly waiting for Brian to realise the hit was against him. Firebrands scored early and the same player was heard to tell his team, "Give them no mercy" which was more a reference to the physical challenges rather than the psychological advantage of scoring goals. The Widgets worked hard in defence and were passing the ball around well at the back. In attack they were unable to put any pressure on the Firebrands defence. Two goals were conceded in a minute just before half time. In the second half a few chances were created but the opposing goalkeeper pulled of three superb saves to deny the Widgets a goal. There were strong performances from Brain Callis, Steve Alger and Brain Nichols in defence and Dave Ratcliffe, Dave Holiday and Jamie Cranfield put together some good touches in their defensive midfield roles.
