The Wanderers moved closer to the top of the table with a 3-0 win against Robinsons. Neil Moon, Steve Millman and Chris Stephen scored the goals that sees the Wanderers in second place in division 2 just 5 points behind O Bristolians.. |
| Intra-club |
26 Westbury members opted out of Christmas shopping and into a competitive pre Christmas run around. The balance of the first half was the skill and youthful legs of the whites midfield where Max Longden, Dave Dineley, Tom Sammes and Pete Ratcliffe were well in control, whilst the red & greens were looking good with James Pope, Alex Yuill and Sam Brewer attacking down the wings. The first goal could have gone to the whites, but they found Pete Murphy a barrier that they could not pass. The red & greens opened the scoring whn the ball was slipped to Nathan Walkey, who chipped it high into the net. The game still stayed very even and Doug Ward drew the best out of Pete Murphy. Doug went to his strong side, the keeper's weak side in a one on one. Just as he shaped to push the ball into the net, Pete stretched with a perfect reverse stick tackle to knock the ball away. At the other end Sam Brewer making a welcome vacation appearance (as did Max Longden and Pete Ratcliffe) received a pass on the right side of the D and hit a blistering shot high into the net from narrow angle. A third goal came right on the stroke of half time when Alex Yuill swept a right wing cross high into the net. The whites came out in the second half and gave it some wellie and kept up the pressure that led to Pete Ratcliffe drag flicking/pushing the ball with unstopable power from a short corner. The whites fully deserved the goal. The red & greens were having their moments going forward and earned a penalty stroke through Mike Harvey, but Mike wasn't able to find the target from the spot. Nathan Walkey had been causing the whites a few problems and finally found the space to get a shot in with one of his trade mark well struck strikes. Terry Watts was agonisingly close with a clever flick that just went over the cross bar for the red & greens. The whites who had lost Dave Dineley in the first half with a damaged foot then lost Duncan Ogilvie with a cut head. Duncan had several chances just prior to the incident but found Pete Murphy too big a target to beat. A deflected ball caught Duncan on the forehead, but he was planning some pre Christmas drinks later rather than paracetamol at the end of the game! The whites closed the gap when Andy Cameron picked up the ball on the 25 and drove to the top of the D before unleashing a delightful shot to score his first goal at Westbury (sadly it doesn't count on the goal chart). There was a comedy moment when the time keeper (me!) asked the umpiresd to blow for time. The game was being umpired by a player from each side for 8 and a half minutes during their spell off the pitch. With the watch counting down each 8 and a half minutes, there was still actually time for one more rotation. Fortunatley Mike Harvey was also timing it and pointed out there was still 8 minutes left. This gave both sides opportunities to create scoring chances again, but no more goals were scored and the match finished 4-2 to the red & greens. Thanks go to everyone who supported the event and to the players who blew the whistle, the majority of them doing it for the first time. Teams Red & Green: Murphy, Mulloy, Tomlinson, Sheppard, Yuill, Pope, Watts, Thomas P, Waalkey, Harvey, Palmer, Taylor M, Brewer. Whites: Hicks, Cameron, Montague, Ratcliffe D, Longden M, Dineley, Sammes, Ratcliffe P, Mulla, Ward, Ogilvie, Jepson, Holliday D. |

The end of the first half of the season training ended with a match between many of the Wednesday night regulars. The quality of the play for both sides showed how coach Joe Thomas's playing system is being put into action. The way that George Minchin and Dave Parry played shows that they both have great futures in the game. For the record two well struck Phil Beer goals, two from Alex Yuill and a strike from a narrow angle from James Pope won the game for the blues, but the reds played equalily as well and scored twice through Peter Bell and Terry Watts. These goals do not go on the goal chart! |

Another Christmas cracker for the thirds as they too go into the break on top of the table. Nathan Walkey scored a hat-trick and Chris Poulsom, Matt Taylor and Kyle Purkiss had one each. |

The Wanderers were disappointed to only earn a point in a 1-1 draw with Bristol Uwe. Neil Moon was on target. |

The Warriors were full of optimism for their game at Bristol & West having beaten the home team in a friendly in September. The Warriors took on the game on at a frenzied pace, full of running, hard work and determination. All fine attributes that are part of a winning formula. However, there are other aspects of the game such as guile, changing the pace, playing to the game plan and keeping the ball strong. Unfortunately there was a lot of the later missing. With some of the play being conducted if Usain Bolt was chasing us down, the ball was given away cheaply too often, and there weren't many periods of constructive play from Westbury for sixty minutes. Playing 3, 4, 3 the game was even in the first half, with Joe Petch making some good saves. At the other end it is difficult to recall many quality crosses into the D or saves made from the home keeper. Tom Taylor was feeling his way back from last week's calf strain and was the most creative player in the team. His two short corners were well struck, but just wide, and frustratingly just missing the stick of the injector. At half time the game was still deadlocked at 0-0, so there was still everything to play for. Maybe the game plan was wrong as indecision crept into the back three who have been our most consistent unit this winter. The first Bristol & West goal was left uncontested as the home forward was given the freedom of the D and Joe Petch tried valiantly to save but was well beaten by a good shot. There was a similar feel the B&W second goal. Joe made a great hands stop to a deflection that was going over his head to stop a third going in. With ten minutes to go, there was a more cohesion in the Westbury moves and James Pope began to carve his way down the right. Tom Taylor, felt his calf was strong enough to see him press up as the play maker and things began to look more like the Westbury team we expected to see from the start. A short corner was somewhat tamely hit back to the far post, but Toby Whitehead was alert enough to flick it in to bring us within a goal of B&W. Ed White was a whisker away from a late equaliser, but his shot was just the wrong side of the post. The home team had a better balance about the way they played and probably deserved their win as they played a more controlled game. What can we learn from this defeat? When we play both B&W E and F again ( we've lost 2-1 away to both of them), we can reverse those scores it we play with more control and make better decisions on how, where and when we use the ball. If we were of limited ability, then it would be fair to say we gave it our best shot, however, we have for more to offer than we showed today. We can learn from watching Tom Taylor who didn't try to get to the bye line in 9.95 secs, but did it in a sensible, skilful and assured manner, always in control of the ball and making good choices in the passes he made. We finish the first half of the season with a 50% record, but it could so easily have been 6-8 points more. |

Hosting the league leaders was always going to be a tough ask for the Warriors, S Glos look a much more organised club, their warm up was good and they look technically capable players. The Warriors warm up was almost non existent, yet they opened the game very brightly as if they were fully stretched and ahead of the pace of the game. Within four minutes the Warriors shocked the leaders with an opening goal. Several good attacks put pressure on the visitors and from one, James Pope's shot ballooned into the air off the keeper's pads. Martin Palmer flapped a couple of times at the ball, before pushing it at goal and seeing it trickle over the line off the keeper. S Glos were clearly in shock previously only once finishing on the losing side this season. They pressed upfield and two minutes later Martin Eland saved a rasping short corner, but was unable to stop the second shot. S Glos were now running the show and grabbed a second goal, again from a short corner, although this time the shot was a little tamer and went in off the edge of a stick or the pads. James Pope was having some good runs down the right and Dickie Edwards was working hard down the left. Pete Thomas was linking well in his role at the top of the diamond. However, it was S Glos who scored, this time from open play. There was still time left for Westbury to surprise the leaders. This time it was Toby Whitehead who had a slap at goal from the top of the D. Somehow the ball caught deflections, but still found it's way under the keeper and over the goal line. Pete Thomas was valiantly trying to add the finishing touch close to the goal line, but such was the confusion caused by Toby's shot that no one else got a touch before it crossed the line. This took the Warriors into half time with just a 3-2 deficit. The second half saw better play from Westbury, but the concern of the players battling in the middle of the park was that the forwards were unable to hold the ball up. S Glos converted another short corner, again the first effort was cleared, but their influential centre midfield recovered the ball and took his chance well. The game stayed at 4-2 for a long spell. Last season the Warriors would have collapsed against the teams in the top four positions, but the defence of Colton, Aitchison, Simon, Sheppard and Montague were shutting down many scoring opportunities. Martin Eland had a solid game in goal, but damaged his knee and was hampered by the injury for the last 20 minutes. (He struggled to drive his car from the pitch afterwards, so we hope it isn't too bad a knee strain). With Martin less mobile than he would wish, S Glos scored 2 quick goals with less than ten minutes left to put them a strong position. The Warriors didn't give up and Tom Taylor capped a fine game with a goal all of his own making. A free hit on the left side of the 25 was self hit. Tom 'wobbled' into the D and let fly with a blistering shot past the goalkeepers right ear into the roof of the net. A fine goal worthy of a good cheer and congratulatory high five. This was the last major action of the game. S Glos finished 6-3 winners, but the Warriors can be pleased with the way they contested the game and a three goal margin was a little harsh , as the team worked hard in midfield and defence. Thanks to Brian Callis and Martin Hicks for umpiring. Their confident control of the game enabled everyone to play in the right spirit. |
