Bristol's friendliest club could
only manage to fulfil one of 5 friendlies scheduled for today.
The rest of W Glos must have been
Christmas shopping! However, one of their members was under the
impression that we had called off the games. Well the proof of the
(Christmas) pudding is in the eating, and we served up 4 teams at
home who played each other in two very competitive and well fought
matches.
Alan Spark's team opened the scoring
on the sand based pitch, but Dave Wornell's team bounced back with
an equaliser. In a matter of seconds, Alan's team regained the lead
and added a third. Dave's team responded by pulling back both goals
to settle the match as an honourable 3-3 draw. Everyone who played
in the game agreed it was a high standard match and a credit to
everyone who took part. It shows the strength of the club that we
can put on matches like this. John Fox showed up well in the game,
matches like this are a good opportunity for young players to learn
from the experienced players.
On the water based
pitch Duncan Armsby's team scored first after some skillful work
by Mark Crofts. Mark later retired form the game with a bad back.
Gareth Nichols pounced on a defensive mix up to equalise and Neil
Moon's great run allowed Paul Pritchard to put Ger Openshaws XI
ahead. Martin Palmer and Chris Cocks combined to set up Pete Thomas
for an equaliser. 2-2 at the half. Nick Coates struck the goal of
the game from a narrow angle after Duncan's side had lost Tim Palmer
with a hamstring pull. Yet, the ten men with Terry Watts and Will
Halliday prompting from midfield gave Chris Cocks a lot of open
space and a disputed Mark Colton corner and a second Thomas goal
enabled the Armsby XI to win the match. Gareth Nichols and Sam Parker
played well going forward for Ger. |
| 1st
XI: In the only surviving
match the first team notched up a 4-2 victory on the new pitch at
Badminton School. The 1st XI built up a 4 goal lead before taking
their foot off the pedal and letting in two late goals.

XI: Missing 6 regular
first teamers for the rearranged match against Robinsons, the unbeaten
run for the first team came to an end. A disappointing result in
the short term, but there is still a return match when it will be
seen what a full strength team can achieve. Despite this set back
the first still remain near the top of the heap going into the Christmas
break. I've also heard that Newport have dropped out so the games
against them will be deleted from the league table. (The points
deducted from the void Newport games now puts the firsts in second
place.) |
2nd
XI
: In contrast
the seconds had a ding dong match with Whitchurch and came out on
top winning by 3-2. This was an excellent result and puts them in
a position to challenge for promotion in the second half of the
season. Devizes will win the division so the battle for second place
will be down to the team that holds its form together in the new
year. Jon Jarvis wrote: After the hassle of selecting a team for
this crucial match, the seconds recorded our 5th win in a row with
a hard fought 3-2 win over Whitchurch, which keeps the team 3rd
only 3 points behind Bath. Great team effort, all the players brought
up form the 3rds didn't look out of place, and the second half performance
was one of the best of the season. Goal scorers were Slider in the
first minute of the second half to level the scores, then myself
with 2, with the winner coming 8 minutes from time. This sets us
up for a great battle for the rest of the season to see if we can
finish as high up the league as possible. Well played all 12 members
of my team!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers won their match
in Bath with an unlikely pair of infrequent scorers. Will Lee and
George Banting both got goals in the same match.
|
Wizards:
The Wizards were not as sharp
as last week and had to settle for a draw in their rearranged league
match with Cheltenham. Cheltenham opened the scoring in the first
half when the Wizards had more control and time on the ball. Several
chances were missed before a series of good strikes from short corners
saw the visiting keeper make some good saves. An equaliser came
on the stroke of half time. Yet another short corner was earned
by the Wizards, this time it was slipped left and Ben Jones scored
his first goal for the club with a clever flick. The Wizards did
not move the ball round so effectively in the second half, and it
took some great saves by Pete Murphy in goal to keep a point. Alan
Christopher was not reintroduced into the side after rolling out
in the first half. His midfield prompting was missed.
|
Warriors: The
Warriors and the Widgets played out a hard fought league match.
There were two winners - firstly the Warriors, who somehow managed
to sneak all three points, secondly the Widgets who, to a man played
a massive game and nearly pulled off a shock result. The Warriors
rarely got going and found passing difficult. The Widgets closed
down the midfield and at times it looked as if they were playing
with 12 and the Warriors with 10. Gareth Nichols opened the scoring
for the Warriors, but with the last touch of the fist half Mike
Harvey grabbed an equaliser. In the second half the Widgets worked
very hard in defence and Jamie Cranfield was credited with driving
them forward in midfield. The Warriors defence held firm with some
good covering by Tim Denner and Brian Nichols who was later named
man-of-the-match. Brian Callis, Tim Palmer, Dave Ratcliffe and Dave
Holliday were excellent throughout the game for the Widgets, and
Stuart Horn in goal made several fine saves and controlled his D
very well. The Warriors were denied a goal from one short corner,
but Sam Parker steered in a Martin Palmer short corner flick to
take the lead. The Widgets almost snatched a last minute equaliser
when Jamie Cranfield just slapped in wide. |
| Veterans: The
Veterans had their second run out of the year and came up against
an O Bs attack which was just a little too sharp in the D. Pete Thomas
'stole' an equaliser early in the second half, and Tom Taylor drilled
in a short corner for 2-2. O Bs then scored 3 before Chris Cocks scored
after a great pass from Alan Sparks. |

Comment:
It seems Newport are a troubled
club, they've lost 5 first team players last week and were unable
to fulfil the fixture. A 5-0 walk over doesn't really represent
the type of result the firsts would have got. Perhaps we've reached
a stage where 8-0 might be a more appropriate score for conceding
a game! The firsts have now scored 103 goals if you count today's
fantasy goals! The upside of this is that the team remain rested
ready for the Slough cup tie on Sunday.

1st
XI: Paul Croker summed
up the cup match v Slough with his observations: I have never seen
a team so hell bent on disagreeing with the umpires. 3/4 of the
team were lucky to stay on the pitch in my book. Even their "waterboy"
wanted to get in on the action. After the game I said to a few of
thier players "well played, and what a good game." Their
response was along the lines of " Yeah we did our best, but
what can do you about the umpires", they were acting like they
just lost the game not won it!!! On the other hand though I thought
we were unlucky on serveral ocasisons with Gary Roper not able to
net two possible shots (which if this was any other game they would
have landed in the back of the net.) The team played well and at
times moved the ball across and up the pitch at speed and directly
to players. Slough found this hard to cope with. Also key to note
werePhil Meakin's 2 saves of the line - totally awesome! Neil Kinghad
another top game, moving out and claiming loose balls (hockey ball)
at the top of the D. Serveral first class clearances. All in all
the team did well and were unlucky. Was a good game to watch guys..
Well done one and all! |
2nd
XI
: The
seconds completed a double over Llanishen on a pitch that Andy Griffin
described as newly laid with piles of sand and grass making it an
unusual surface. The twos have a rearranged fixture for next Saturday. |
3rd
XI
: The
thirds were playing a Cheltenham team that beat them in the opening
day of the league season. Alan Sparks gave the side the lead. The
team looked very strong and must have felt confident of going on
to win. Cheltenham scored an equaliser and then claimed that they
got an edge to a ball that flew into the goal. However, the eagle
eyed umpire had spotted that it was a defensive stick and a corner
was awarded. Westbury then thought they had won the game. A free
hit into the D came back to Nick Coates who struck a brilliant shot
from the edge of the D. The umpire at first awarded the goal, but
then after talking to his colleague who quite rightly pointed out
that the original free hit was lifted dangerously into the D. Still,
this was a good result against one of the leading teams in the division. |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers keep their run
of wins going which now stretches to 15 games (including 4 from
last season) and means that they finished their first half of the
league with 10 straight wins. They have now scored 84 goals this
season and today's win completes a double over Cheltenham.
|
Wizards:
The Wizards looked in much
better shape for their game against Winchcombe. Ian Coles must thank
the goalkeeper who contrived to stop his short corner (struck somewhat
high up the pads in my view), but then, in falling over he turned
and kicked the ball into his own goal. BIZARRE! The game was sewn
up before Winchcombe scored a second late consolation goal. Alan
Christopher stayed on the pitch for the whole game doing well to
overcome some provocation when an opponent kicked him. This result
too, gave the Wizards a double over their opponents. Matt Taylor
had a storming game and worked back well on one occasion to clear
a dangerous cross at the back post. His quick passing down the right
was very decisive and opened up a number of good moves.
|
Warriors: The
Warriors played some excellent first half hockey to establish a
2-0 half time lead. Tim Palmer was outstanding in defence in the
opening half and Rob Hughes had his best game yet. Having Frank
Gibbs at centre half enabled the Warriors to find a quality player
who always made himself available for a pass. Martin Palmer on his
return after a six week absence due to a broken finger scored two,
the second being a superb solo run into the D with a reverse stick
shot (even if I say so myself). To ensure he didn't get a hat-trick
he was sent to the bench for the closing minutes of the game! Gareth
Nichols had a hand in two well worked goals with unselfish passes
to his unmarked team mates. A good team performance cements the
team's position near the top of the table. |
Widgets: The
Widgets came away from 'Ross-on-Wye did we go there' as Paul Pritchard
bemoaned as 11-0 losers. Sean Lemoir donned the pads for the first
time ever and made some good saves. The Widgets had to draft in
a friend of one of the players to make up the numbers so consequently
they were very light weight up front. It's a shame that some of
the kids who come on Wednesdays can't be called up to play. |
