28th October 2009: The winter season has started with a mix of results. The first team opened up with a win against Firebrands, with a new captain, coach and line up. A much younger side plan to build up experience in Prem 2. The seconds have played some good hockey, but have yet to earn a point. Their efforts deserve better, but they have played first teams in every league game so far. The thirds have not had the successful start they had hoped for, but points have come their way as have some defeats. The Wanderers are also in the same position with new players coming into the club they have not yet established a winning run yet. The success side of the season so far are the Wizards. Last year they could not score goals, this year they are rampant with 22 goals in three games. Promotion could be on if this form continues. The Warriors and Widgets have struggled to score goals, but both sides have won a game each leading into the club derby. The Widgets, with an empahasis on youth were within 5 minutes of victory until 2 late, late goals secured a win for the Warriors by 3-2.
7th September 2009: The Summer League finished with the Bluebottles, Angels and Cardinals achieving 50% records. This can be seen as a positive achievement. The Bluebottles blooded a lot of youngsters in the 1st XI. They were unable to raise a side to travel to Bath Buccs on a Friday night and not only conceeded a walk over but lost 3 points as well. The Angles and Cardinals were both promoted in 2008 and were successful in winning half their games at the higher standard they were playing at. The Devils were one win away from 50%, but they did beat the league champions Bristol & West in the last game of the summer. A lot of youngsters turned out for Dave Ratcliffe's side ably assisted by some senior players.
16th June 2009: The Westbury Summer League teams have made a successful start. The 1st team reverted to the traditional name of Bluebottles opened up with four straight wins. The side led by Andy Krebs has included a number of young players. The 'A' team (now called the Angels) lost closely to Bluebottles, suffered a couple of big defeats but beat Bristol & West. They are being challenged by being a 2nd XI playing the top local clubs. The Bishops (formerly the 'B' XI) have won and lost their opening games in equal measure in thier first season in Division 2. Their opening win against Chippenham was a good start to their summer campaign. The 'C' team have been rebranded The Cardinals, and played their first games in Division 3 for the first time in their short history. A close defeat in the opening game was followed by three straight wins and three clean sheets, showing that the side can compete in this division. Finally The Devils have taken up an unfamiliar place near the top of the table following 2 wins 3 draws and just one very close defeat. Young players are the cornerstone of this side, apart from when GCSEs have kept them revising!

The Veterans team wound up the 2009-10 season with a win at home againts Old Bristolians.

Pete Farrell was named Clubman of the Year for 2009-10 for all his stirling work on running the newly formed Badgers team (above). (Below) Duncan Ogilvie was made a Life Member in recognition of his outstanding work in achieving ClubFirst Accreditaion for Westbury. Full story in press release below.

A picture of Chairman Duncan Olgilvie with Angie Pearce, the England Hockey Nominated Officer who visited the club to assess the club. The following article went into the Evening Post. Westbury & United Banks Hockey Club received confirmation yesterday (18th Feb 2010) from England Hockey that they had been recognised as working towards providing a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club environment, and as such have been awarded the England Hockey ClubsFirst Accreditation.
Not only does this make Westbury & United Banks Hockey Club the first Mens Hockey Club in Bristol to achieve this accreditation, it now joins an elite group of less than 200 clubs nationwide with this award.
The Club will now be developing links with two of the three School Sports Partnerships in Bristol, St Bedes and Ashton Park.
Chairman Duncan Ogilvie commented "ClubsFirst accreditation really is a major landmark in the development of the Club. With ClubsFirst accreditation we can now plan for success, rather than merely hope for it!"
About the Club: Based at University of Bristol's Sports Complex at Coombe Dingle, Westbury and United Banks Hockey Club are one of the largest Hockey Clubs in the region running seven league sides in the N4 West of England & South Wales Hockey League, five Summer League sides in the Bristol & District Summer League, a Junior side in Bristol Badgers (under 16's) League, a mixed side (in association with the Westberries Hockey Club) and an occasional Veterans side.

The cast of Wake's Progress who performed the comedy written by Martin Fey in January 2010 at The Alma Tavern.

Here is Ernie modeling the latest MOD outfit in readiness for the invasion of the 'Netherworld'. This secret war effort is code named 'Operation Underworld'. As yet it is uncertain whether a) there will be helicopters available and b) whether they would be able to operate in the Netherworld theatre of war!

Well goalkeepers are an odd lot, and they don't come any odder or uglier than this one. Any guesses who has taken off his protective game mask to reveal his real one?

Coombe Dingle was buzzing with Angels and Demons!

Did anyone notice Harry Potter or did he give this one a miss. Count Poker is zeroing in for some blood, but if he bites Pyscho, who is likely to be more affected?

Good job the Combe Dingle catering staff weren't here, or next Saturday they might be serving up 'Heads on a Platter' for the post match teas. And that is candelbra behind her head not horns with a nice glass of Transylvanian Burgundy in the side (well it was actually blue).

Duncan played Stretch the butler, but he does remind me of someone from a Dickens (or similar) period novel, but I can't quite place who it was. Fortunately the butler didn't do it.

Jurgen's glass is distinctly unblooded, which seems strange for a character who has made a living as a Dracula look alike. Also in shot is the Velma 'look-a-like', but there was no sign of Scooby and Shaggy, although there was alledgedly plenty of 'ectoplasm'!

The parade of costumes. The winners were the head on a plate and the Netherworld Force Commander!

Reminds me of something from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne or a monster from Stingray (younger readers will need to Google these references to see what I'm on about!)

Richard Robson, captain of W Wilts Veterans recieves the trophy from Duncan Ogilvie as winners of the 3rd Westbury Veterans' Tournament.

Westbury's new veteran goalkeeper and former rock star Ed West.

Ed was formerly a member of Zee Zee Top. Here he rolls into town for a concert at a smaller-than-usual venue at the Tennessee Theatre, with legends Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill. Ed will be appearing at Trinity College, Cambridge, student union bar in October when he sets out on his individual career. It remains to be seen if he can achieve the heights of success he had as part of Zee Zee Top.

Oh well it may have been to wooden spoon, but the veterans gave everything they had and didn't go down without a fight.

Westbury Devils 2009, the team that beat the league leaders Bristol & West in the final game of the season.

Martin Fey was captain of the Cardinals on the day they secured their best ever win, by beating Warlocks 'A' (West Wilts 2nd XI) 3-2. Martin bought a Captain's jug to celebrate. Brian Nichols sits by, waiting expectantly with an empty glass.

Tom Taylor is pictured here receiving the Bob Hayman Award at the club AGM.

Westbury legend Ian Thorne was in Bristol in April supporting his club Brooklands in the National League play-offs for a place in the National League Premier Division. Ian was a very happy supporter, as Brooklands won all three games to qualify for top flight hockey next season. Ian had shouted himself hoarse all weekend. He told me that he retired from playing about 5 years ago as a result of injuries. He is still obviously very active in hockey heping out from the sidelines.
