A
picture of Chairman Duncan Olgilvie with Angie Pearce, the England
Hockey Nominated Officer who visited the club to assess the club.
The following article went into the Evening Post. Westbury &
United Banks Hockey Club received confirmation yesterday (18th Feb
2010) from England Hockey that they had been recognised as working
towards providing a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club environment,
and as such have been awarded the England Hockey ClubsFirst Accreditation.
Not only does this make Westbury & United Banks Hockey Club
the first Mens Hockey Club in Bristol to achieve this accreditation,
it now joins an elite group of less than 200 clubs nationwide with
this award.
The Club will now be developing links with two of the three School
Sports Partnerships in Bristol, St Bedes and Ashton Park.
Chairman Duncan Ogilvie commented "ClubsFirst accreditation
really is a major landmark in the development of the Club. With
ClubsFirst accreditation we can now plan for success, rather than
merely hope for it!"
About the Club: Based at University of Bristol's Sports Complex
at Coombe Dingle, Westbury and United Banks Hockey Club are one
of the largest Hockey Clubs in the region running seven league sides
in the N4 West of England & South Wales Hockey League, five
Summer League sides in the Bristol & District Summer League,
a Junior side in Bristol Badgers (under 16's) League, a mixed side
(in association with the Westberries Hockey Club) and an occasional
Veterans side.

 |
| Here
is Ernie modeling the latest MOD outfit in readiness for the invasion
of the 'Netherworld'. This secret war effort is code named 'Operation
Underworld'. As yet it is uncertain whether a) there will be helicopters
available and b) whether they would be able to operate in the Netherworld
theatre of war!
|
 |
| Well
goalkeepers are an odd lot, and they don't come any odder or uglier
than this one. Any guesses who has taken off his protective game
mask to reveal his real one?
|
 |
| Coombe
Dingle was buzzing with Angels and Demons!
|
 |
| Did
anyone notice Harry Potter or did he give this one a miss. Count
Poker is zeroing in for some blood, but if he bites Pyscho, who
is likely to be more affected?
|
 |
| Good
job the Combe Dingle catering staff weren't here, or next Saturday
they might be serving up 'Heads on a Platter' for the post match
teas. And that is candelbra behind her head not horns with a nice
glass of Transylvanian Burgundy in the side (well it was actually
blue).
|
 |
| Duncan
played Stretch the butler, but he does remind me of someone from
a Dickens (or similar) period novel, but I can't quite place who
it was. Fortunately the butler didn't do it.
|
 |
| Jurgen's
glass is distinctly unblooded, which seems strange for a character
who has made a living as a Dracula look alike. Also in shot is the
Velma 'look-a-like', but there was no sign of Scooby and Shaggy,
although there was alledgedly plenty of 'ectoplasm'!
|
|
| The
parade of costumes. The winners were the head on a plate and the
Netherworld Force Commander!
|
 |
| Reminds
me of something from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne
or a monster from Stingray (younger readers will need to Google
these references to see what I'm on about!)

new veteran goalkeeper and former rock star Ed West.
|
 |
| Ed
was formerly a member of Zee Zee Top. Here he rolls into town for
a concert at a smaller-than-usual venue at the Tennessee Theatre,
with legends Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill. Ed will be appearing
at Trinity College, Cambridge, student union bar in October when
he sets out on his individual career. It remains to be seen if he
can achieve the heights of success he had as part of Zee Zee Top.
|
|
| Oh
well it may have been to wooden spoon, but the veterans gave everything
they had and didn't go down without a fight.

Fey was captain of the Cardinals on the day they secured their best
ever win, by beating Warlocks 'A' (West Wilts 2nd XI) 3-2. Martin
bought a Captain's jug to celebrate. Brian Nichols sits by, waiting
expectantly with an empty glass.

 |
| Westbury
legend Ian Thorne was in Bristol in April supporting his club Brooklands
in the National League play-offs for a place in the National League
Premier Division. Ian was a very happy supporter, as Brooklands
won all three games to qualify for top flight hockey next season.
Ian had shouted himself hoarse all weekend. He told me that he retired
from playing about 5 years ago as a result of injuries. He is still
obviously very active in hockey heping out from the sidelines.
