Why Play Hockey?
Hockey is a game played by all ages. It is skilful, competitive and demands good levels of fitness. The rules are very clearly set out and unsporting behaviour is not tolerated. Therefore it is a game that encourages fair play and good manners. Many players play for 30 or 40 years. There are Veterans sides (over 40), Vintage sides (over 50) and Masters (over 60).
Hockey is also a very sociable sport, where players stop after the game to meet with fellow team mates and opposing players. If you plan to go to on to University it is an ideal sport to make new friends when you start your academic studies away from home. It is also an Olympic Sport and we can now look forward to hockey at the London 2012 Olympics.
Hockey is a game that can be played throughout your life, unlike football and rugby. They are collision sports, where your body (especially your knees and ankles) will, often for many people, not allow you to play competitively past the age of 30. Playing on artificial surfaces means that injuries associated with playing on bumpy grass pitches do not happen.
Westbury has also traditionally had a number of father and son combinations playing in the same sides, plus wives/girlfriends/daughters playing for Westberries Ladies Hockey Club, because this is very much a 'family game'.
