XI: The first team suffered a disappointing defeat in their
opening league match. Trailing 2-1 they pulled a goal back,
but could not get a second to get at least one point. |
| 2nd
XI:
The twos had a comprehensive victory at Bridgwater.
Moonie is once again the early pace setter in the goal chart
with two more goals. Slider reports: A 5-1 victory against a
weak Bridgwater 2's side means we've yet to lose. We perhaps
should have scored more and we were somewhat messy at times,
but we did play some excellent hockey and scored 5 good goals.
Well done lads. Scorers: TC, Moonie (2), SLIDER, JPS.
Oh yeah, I must apologise to Moonie for nicking
his hat-trick with a 1-yard poach. |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds felt that their opposition
was bolstered by some quality players who tilted the balance
in the home team's favour. Tom Alger scored on his first outing
of the season and Limbo got the second. |
| Wanderers:
The visiting team from Bridgwater could not keep up with the
pace of the Wanderers. The goals were shared between John Ludley,
Steve Carter, Tufty and James Haynes, his first for the club.
The Wanderers had a lot of possession, and put in a number of
shots at goal, but had to settle for just four, when on another
day they might have been deadlier in front of goal. |
| Wizards:
The Wizards faced a couple of second teamers, but Duncan said
they were a bit knackered and could affect the result. A 4-2
win had Duncan in stitches, or was it nearly popping out of
his stitches on his return after his enforced lay off? He did
score two along with fellow veterans Mark Crofts and Pete Farrell. |
| Warriors: The
Warriors were a bit sluggish at first at seeing off the ten
men of Bridgwater. Brian Nichols caught the eye as a play maker
because he had little tackling to because of the limited attacks
by the visitors. Rob Hughes found some key passes at last creating
several goals and scoring 2 himself. Graham Brown provided penetration
down the right and scored one himself. Martin Palmer notched
4 whilst Shep struck from a short corner. Spare a thought for
Martin Eland who was a spectator for most of the game. |
| Widgets: The
Widgets with a number of new faces put up a lot of resistance
against Wootton Basset. A home player from their first team
dominated each time he was brought on. Never-the-less the score
reached 2-2 before the home team sealed it with two goals to
the one added by the Widgets. Jamie Cranfield scored twice and
John Fox struck the other one. |

XI: The first team were winners in this fixture last year but
were unable to repeat that result this time round against Prem
1 opposition. Meaks reports that: A
tough final friendly game before the league begins next week
against a Marlborough side promoted last year to Prem 1. We
matched them all the way until about the 50th minute when their
extra fitness began to pay off. 1-1 at the time thanks to a
powerful-ish flick from Mason, with more chances at both ends.
Then Marlborough scored a couple of clinical breakaway goals
when we lost the ball in their D.Overall a 5-2 defeat flattered
them a little but we were well beaten in the last 15 minutes
or so. Definitely a fixture to keep each year. |
| 2nd
XI: A well earned victory for the second team
against a Whitchurch side that will be facing our first team
in the league. |
| 3rd
XI: The 3rd XI went 2-1 down with Whitchurch
pressing hard in the firts half. Ian Hipwell picked out Limbo
for an equaliser on the verge of half time. Then a flurry of
goals from well worked attacks including a thumping reverse
stick hit from Ben Jones put Whitchurch on the back foot. They
were caught open at the back a number of times and on another
day more goals would have come. The visitors got a consolation,
but with the final hit of the game Simon Baker herad the whistle
blow for time as his shot hit the net. No goal was signaled
but it looked from the side as if he had struck first. Roger
seemed sure that time had run out. This was a solid performance
from the threes who loked sharp going forward. |
| Wanderers:
A close 3-2 defeat means a second successive win for last years
'star team', however the opposition was tough and the real measure
will be in the new league campaign strating in two weeks. |
| Wizards:
Losing 5-1 at one stage the Wizards were much more of a force
in the second half and edged back closer to finish just two
goals behind a strong Whitchurch team. |
| Warriors: Shep
scored first from a short and the Warriors could have gone 2-0
up. The home side had some highly talented youngsters with wonderful
stick skills. Stuart Horn kept out the first 3 shorts that were
powerfully flick high at him, but was decieved by a 'bobbler,
3 shorts and a stroke gave Whitchurch a half time lead of 4-1.
Westbury had a few chances and were unlucky to be losing by
three goals. For twenty minutes in the second half the defence
held firm. We were indebted to Barney Willia, George Banting
and Pete Murphy for playing in midfield with 10 players unavailable.
Pete in fact cleared off the line. The Whitchurch youngsters
scored 5 late goals each on coming from skillful stick control
and were individual rather than team goals. It wasn't that we
were bad, they were just too good. It seems that most of them
were off to the Welsh trials the next day! |
| Widgets: Played
2 won 2, what more can you say about the Widgets. Last season
they only won 2 in total, this year they've achieved that in
two weeks. Mike Harvey and Jay Lutwych made it 2 goals in 2
games a piece. Rob Hughes found the net along with John Fox
and debutant Nick Hudd completed the scoring. |

XI: This match was hastily arranged (on the
forum) after both sides were let down by opponents, and it was
Westbury who edged ahead by the odd goal in 9. Slider wrote:
Saturday saw a great start to our season with a stonking 5-4
win over a spirited and strong Robinsons 2/3's side.
The lads took a while to find their feet, but
the more the game wore on the better we played. 2-1 down at
half-time, we played an excellent second half and fully deserved
to lead 5-3. Robs got one back in the dying minutes, but the
lads held firm and finished by far the stronger of the two teams.Goals
came from, TC (2), Adam (a cheeky lob of the keeper), Moonie
and Gary.Team: Clint, Mace, Griff, Coates,
Billing, Banting Jnr, Tucker, Watts, Neil Derek Moon, TC, Catchpole,
JJ.

XI: The thirds found a sprinkling of 1st team
players in the Cardiff side and they proved to be just a little
too strong to get a result. Ben Jones got his first goal at
3rd team level for Westbury. |
| Wanderers:
The Wanderers had to search their dictionaries for the word
defeat after their 21 straight wins last season. |
| Wizards:
After a lot of effort to send eleven men across the bridge we
had to eventually had to cancel. |
| Warriors: With
the preceding match over running by 30 minutes, and the appointed
goalkeeper failing to show, the Warriors had a difficult start
to the day. The Robs goalkeeper kindly started the game whilst
Stuart Horn hastily got to the pitch as a late replacement.
After 5 minutes the heavens opened and the waterbased pitch
became unplayable. We then switched to the sand. Stuart arrived
and Mark Colton donned the helmet whilst Stuart kitted up, and
marshaled the defence to keep out several short corners. The
rain continued and the sand resembled Louisiana. Steve Alger,
Brian Nichols and Mark Colton showed why the Warriors defence
was outstanding in the waterlogged conditions. We lacked penetration
going forward with Alan Christopher looking the best of the
forwards. In the end it was a penalty stroke which decided it.
The keeper got a glove to it but in the style of a Shane Warne
slider it spun back and just crossed the line. The game was
played in great spirit by 22 extremely wet players. |
| Widgets: Well
done the Widgets, who opened the season with a great win. All
credit to Devizes for turning up with 8 players when many clubs
would have cried off. Sean LeMoir and John Fox were loaned to
Devizes and gave a good account of themselves. The opening goal
came when Tim Palmer fed Mark Crofts, whose jinking run led
to Sam Parker snatching a goal. Mark was the play maker in a
team where everyone performed well, and another great run by
him opened up a slap shot for Mike Harvey. In the second half
Jay Lutwych hammered his second effort for a superb goal. Stuart
Horn, who also made some crucial saves for the Warriors, was
called into action late in the game to preserve his second clean
sheet of the day. |

XI: The first team match against
Devizes saw the opponents take the lead and hold Westbury to
2-2 at half time. Two Devizes players contrived to knock each
other out of the game leaving the first team to coast to victory |
| Wanderers:The
Wanderers secured a win against Yate with the winner coming
from Pete Farrell whose new stick will hopefully see a lot of
use this season. Tufty opened his account for the season. Tufty
wrote: Not surprisingly little cohesion in the side in a scrappy
1st half. For a short while in the 2nd we took control and a
two goal lead. Never looked in too much danger despite conceeding
with 10 to go. Useful debut from Simon
? who played at sweeper and tackled and passed well. |
