This is the first week where we fielded
seven teams with 6 wins and 1 defeat 43 goals for 6 against.
If we can maintain this form then we can look forward to another
outstanding season. Andy Griffin bought a club captain's jug
at the BBQ in recognition of a good days work by all the teams
on Saturday.
|
| 1st
XI: Frosty leapt to number one
in the goal scoring chart with an impressive 7 against Weston,
who are in a division above but clearly a class below the first
team. Newport await next week, and with 29 goals in the bank,
how many will the first team get in their opening league match?
Roper, Webster and Parish are appearing regularly amongst the
scorers showing that the goals can come from anywhere from the
forwards and midfield. |
| 2nd
XI: The seconds saw
off Weston on a pitch that look suspiciously like Weston sands
with the tide in. Goody opened the scoring with a thundering
shot, Moonie took a couple of shorts to find his range before
driving one in. Slider's goal was also well struck following
up his own short corner injection, he picked the ball up off
the pads, drifted right and fired home. JJ made a cameo appearance
to test his hamstrings and was unlucky not to score with his
first touch. |
| 3rd
XI: Weston thirds were
a very young side and let in 6 goals in each half. There were
hat-tricks for Lampey, Small and Catchpole. Lampey was reluctant
to claim his fourth goal when the keeper kicked it in, but there
is no such thing as an own goal in hockey. This wasn't really
a fair test for the thirds other than to exercise their goal
scoring skills. In fact there could have been more, because
one or two clear chances were spurned late in the game. The
real test will start next week against Cheltenham! |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers put 6 past Wotton with Tufty
claiming 4 and Ian Hipwell collecting his first goal for the
club. The main talking point of the match was Pete Murphy's
appraisal of Poker's presence in the defence which he summed
up by somehow clobbering him. Poker had to spend 45 minutes
in Cirencester A&E, but he declined any analgesics to kill
the pain telling the nurse "I'm drinking to night!"
Pete in the meantime will be in training to take on Ahmir Khan
in an ABA event over 4 rounds sometime soon!
| Nose chart (qualification
for this chart = a bloody nose) |

Taylor T, Brown, Croker.........whose
next? |
|
| Wizards:
The Wizards visited Wales and came back
the winners making it a run of 16 straight wins. How long can
they keep this streak going? Winchcombe may be a good test next
week when the league campaign gets going. Graham Brown scored
2 more and Cocksy playing sweeper contrived to get his first
of the season. It was alleged at the BBQ that he players sweeper
in front of his own centre forward!
|
| Warriors: The
Warriors had some strong performances in defence from TC (Senior)
and Brian Nichols as a much improved N Somerset side worked
hard. The Warriors midfield with Limbo making a gust appearance
converged in the middle of the park and running into tackles.
However, Pete Thomas's first of the season and two Martin Palmer
goals, gave them a three goal lead at the half. In the second
period the midfield passed the ball around and Rob Hughes showed
his potential with some skilful play. The outstanding player
and man-of-the-match was Will Lee, who, despite being right
back was providing some excellent attacking options through
the game in the style of a football wing-back! |
| Widgets: The
Widgets were a man short as they traveled to Lansdown. Lansdown
who had a young team out, sportingly gave them 2 men from their
squad of 12 to make up their numbers. Lansdown then brought
in a player who just played for a higher team to make up their
deficit. He proceeded to be the key factor in the game. The
Widgets actually took the lead early in the game as Jay Lutwych
scored his first of the season. Lansdown equalised quickly and
then took control of the game. Sam Banting who was playing his
first senior game in goal said that the goals he let in he would
have saved last season which is being a little harsh on himself.

A word of praise for Paxo, who played
three games on the trot for the twos, Warriors and Wizards,
winning all three games. Surely this must be a record of some
sort. Can any other goalkeeper claim three wins on the spin
on the same day?
|
| 1st
XI: Bees reported that it was a
long trip for a game that did not tell him too much in preparation
for the league matches to come. However it was three wins out
of three and 17-3 so far. |
| 2nd
XI: The second team
looked well in control of their game against Shepton Mallet
but let a two goal lead slip to 3-3. Moonie was on fire with
two strikes from short corners. JPS, who had earlier had a great
strike disallowed, scored the winner from the penalty spot.
Some sharp performances from Terry Watts, Moonie, JPS and Adam
Banting who had only got home at 5.00am after a night out on
the town! Ger shed his blood in the Westbury cause with a vicious
blow to the chin from a deflected ball. Is giving blood a new
Westbury trend? (There have been two bloody noses in the last
two weeks!) |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds returned
with a win under their belt from their visit to Shepton Mallet.
Sparky, James Lampey and Matt Taylor all opened their scoring
account. Rich Gee was commended for his work in goal. |
| Wizards:
The Wizards, who looked suspiciously like
the Wanderers, were far to strong for a young Wotton-Under-Edge
side. The 8 youngster battled away with some skill and determination.
Steve Carter scored early and then completed his hat-trick with
minutes to spare. Jay Rogers scored on his debut. Their goalkeeper
aged about 13 or 14 was the star of the game. The Wizards passed
the ball round well in a number of moves switching the ball
from wing to wing working it around the back line with good
control.
|
| Warriors: All
credit to Shepton Mallet who came with only 7 players to fulfil
the fixture. Their second team were invited to make up the numbers,
but to a man they declined. Fortunately 2 Westbury second team
players and a third team player turned out to give them 10 men.
As Andy Griffin pointed out that wasn't very 'club spirited'
by Shepton. The Warriors were well on top by half time leading
3-1, but lack of training and match play told, with some poorly
executed passes from tired looking limbs right from the start.
Graham Brown and John Bower performed consistently well throughout
the game. The second half play lacked any real cohesion, but
the greater experience of the Warriors midfield enabled them
to score 2 further goals. Martin Palmer scored his 600th goal
for the club in the last minute. |
| Widgets: The
Widgets started their season with the handicap of no goalkeeper.
Captain Paul Pritchard bravely donned a helmet and stood between
the posts. Tim Palmer reported that the team as a whole played
well and with a kitted keeper the goals would not have been
conceded. The Widgets managed to peg Shepton back to 3-2 before
letting in a fourth goal. Craig Smith and Jamie Cranfield scored
their first goals for the club. Jamie worked hard at centre
half to keep the Widgets going forward. |

XI: Debut goals for Johnny Parish
in a comfortable win against Lansown. Simon Baker reported that
there were many chances during the game and with a bit more
composure in front of goal the score might have been much greater.
No doubt, there will be many big scores to come. My prediction
for the goal chart is: Frosty 40; Roper 40. |
| 2nd
XI: The seconds entertained
Cardiff and notched 10 goals. This is the first time for 21
years that the seconds have reached double figures (something
the rest of the club has done regularly over the years). The
last time this happened was on the 12th February 1983 when they
beat Henleaze (now Yate) 10-0 (and I scored a hat-trick!) This
suggests that goals are going to flow in the seconds as well
this season. Moonie scored 5 and he is now only two away from
his total goals for the whole of last season for the seconds!
JJ is pleased that his side, which has been very 'mix and match',
have scored 17 goals in just 2 games. Once he has established
a settled side this could be the year of the seconds! |
| 3rd
XI: Limbo scored for
the seconds in a game that turned out to be very close, going
right down to the wire. |
| Wizards:
The Wizards continued their unbeaten run
into the new season, which now stretches to 14 straight wins.
Alan Christopher celebrated what seems like his 21st come back
with yet another goal to add to his large tally.
|
| Warriors: The
Warriors came up against a young Newent side and were far to
strong for them. Having said that, the Warrior's quality of
passing and control of the game was excellent. Gareth Nichols
and Tim Palmer worked well down the right flank and set up a
number of goals, and George Banting had time and space to makes
some telling passes. Graham Brown got a bloody nose for his
efforts but was able to carry on after a short break and was
rewarded with a goal for his pains. Gareth, Darren Caleffato
and Shep all managed to hit the same post in a five minute spell
in the first half. Paul Pritchard was making his debut as captain
and can feel that it was a job well done. |

XI: Bees reports: 8 - 1 to the
lads Good points: Frosty 4, Roper 3, Webster 1. Passing, work
and team attitude. Bad points: Tucker snapping his tendons in
his foot!! Cant wait for the league! |
| 2nd
XI: JJ was impressed
with the performance of his second team's 'mixed bunch' of players
that included veterans Millman, Cocks and Palmer. Yate had the
better of the opening minutes, but a great run by TC set up
Hugh Barnes for the opening goal. Yate equalised from the spot.
Neil Richardson, who had a superb debut game, put the twos ahead
and the team then dominated the rest of the match. Seven players
scored - all four midfield and three of the four front men.
Only TC missed out and was unlucky to meet a Yate goalkeeper
in outstanding form who stopped all his efforts. Tufty deserved
the goal he eventually got after hitting the post and the crossbar
with powerful strikes. I was pleased to get my goal for the
twos at the ripe old age of 51. |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds suffered
an injury to Tonka during the warm up which has put Tom out
of action for an extended spell. They were never able to recover
from this and lost the game. A yellow card also added to a disappointing
start to the season. Third team captain for the day Duncan Ogilvie,
scored the first Westbury goal of the new season. |
