1st
XI: 1st's lost 3-2. The first tried some new things in what was
a hard but close game, reports Bees, and are now ready to kick off
their league campaign. |
2nd
XI: 2nds
had a storming 6-1 victory away to Hereford. A mixed performance
saw some sterling attacking hockey and a pair of hat-tricks from
Jnr Frost and JJ. (Thanks to Slider for information) |
3rd
XI: Incensed
by an unflattering report last week in what was apparently a very
close game, the third team left no one in doubt about their superiority.
With 28 goals in just 4 games the 3rds could be the team to watch.
Six players shared the goals. |
Wanderers:
Not to
be out done the Wanderers knocked in 7. Steve Millman announced
his return from major brain surgery to his knee with no less than
4 goals. |
Wizards:
Tom Taylor
flew in especially to keep the Wizards unbeaten this season. Jet
lag didn’t inhibit his scoring prowess! It looks as though BUPA
may well be sponsoring the lower teams with Neil Callis and his
wooden leg getting on the score sheet again. Look out for Long John
Silver in Dunc’s next team selection! |
Warriors: The
Warriors had to pass Stonehenge on their away day trip and we looked
as ponderous as those standing stones. Basic skills were very poorly
executed throughout the team, even yours truly managed to skew a
penalty stroke wide of the post - that just about summed up our
lack-lustre display. We did have a makeshift midfield of 2 full
backs and a winger and it was difficult for them to get us moving
forward quickly. You can excuse man-of-the-match Sam Parker from
criticism, as he was the only player to consistently put himself
about. A word of praise too to Paul Pritchard who put on the pads
for the first time ever. His footwork was pretty effective throughout
the game. |

1st
XI: The first team improved on their last visit to Marlborough and
came a way with a draw. |
2nd
XI: Village
went to town for the seconds scoring the goal that earned a draw. |
3rd
XI: Don’t
know much about the third team game but a 4-2 defeat doesn’t sound
very close. (Sparky tells me that they were chasing an equaliser
and only conceded a fourth goal in the last minute.) |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers
probably had more of the game against Shepton Mallett, but two monumental
defensive errors gifted the opposition a 3-1 lead. Geoff Rickard
closed the gap to 3-2, but the Wanderers did not have the composure
in the D to turn possession into an equaliser. They had 10 short
corners but never actual got a shot on goal until the last one.
Clearly a short corner routine needs to be put into place before
the league starts. |
Wizards:
Duncs was
very pleased with his side’s performance and told us that he was
personally denied 4 goals because the umpire blew up before the
ball crossed the line giving the Wizards short corners instead.
Chris Cutts and Mark Coulton were credited with strong performances
by their leader. Neil Callis picked up a hat-trick after his return
from a rugby injury that only really allows him to run in straight
lines. Duncs put him out on the wing. So how did he get into the
D, he must have turned a few corners somewhere! |
Warriors: The
Warriors were let down by the opposition yet again. The squad of
13 plus Poker, Tim D and Ger had a very useful inter-club game instead
that ended 7-6 to the reds and greens. There were a lot of very
impressive performances. |

Comment:
8 wins
out of 8. If we continue with this form Andy Griffin might be a
bit short of cash after buying a jug each week. (For new readers,
it has been a tradition for the club captain to buy a jug if all
the teams win). |
1st
XI: The first team came back from 2-1 down to beat Premier opposition
for a second successive week. Wotton claimed they were eight players
short of their full side, but those may be hollow excuses. If you
don’t respect your opponents they will blow you away, and that’s
what the ones did. |
2nd
XI: The
second team came from a goal down with an equaliser from Moonie
that shot up into the air above head height. The Buccs goalkeeper
lost sight of it as is fell down behind him and spun into the goal.
(Moonie obviously found the turn on this wicket!) Tom Colquhoun
cracked a smart goal and Moonie went round the keeper but hit his
reverse stick shot wide of the far post before Buccs equalised.
A solo run from Billy Mason set up Martin Palmer (playing his first
full game at this level for 13 years) with the winner. Billy was
judged man-of-the-match with a landslide victory. |
3rd
XI: The
thirds reached 1-0 at half time against 10 man Wotton. In the second
half they ran riot with 9 more goals. Another captain’s hat-trick
– this time Sparky with his first ever hat-trick on a Saturday.
Steve Carter who donned the pads for this game was hard pressed
to justify letting Wotton sneak one goal! |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers
swapped goals with Bath Buccs but at 2-2 Gary Catchpole went off
with a hamstring problem (there were some unkind suggestions that
it was to avoid the hat-trick jug!). Strangely with an influx of
players into the club there was no sub. However the 10 men stole
the game with a Geoff Rickard goal. |
Wizards:
Kinger
described the only goal of the game against Stroud for the Wizards
as “Duncan scored from about that far out” with a gesture about
the size of a large trout. I wonder how many from further out may
have got away? |

Comment:
On this
day England had a hat-trick of wins. The football side beat Macedonia,
the rugby team beat France and the cricket team were establishing
a big first innings score to go on the beat South Africa on Monday
|
1st
XI: The First Team game saw Yate have the greater balance of play,
yet Westbury created the better openings in the first half. Yate
opened the scoring just before half time and Westbury equalised
just after. Yate seemed to tire in the second half and couldn’t
cope with the pace of Bomber Harris down the right. Frosty’s first
goal followed an excellent piece of skill by JJ. Further goals followed
as Westbury pressure increased. Yate did pull back to 3-2 but the
final goal from Baby followed an unselfish pass from Bomber. Yate
are in Premier Division One yet finished comprehensively beaten.
Andy Griffin caught the eye with a solid performance at the back. |
2nd
XI: The
Second Team came away from Yate with a clear cut victory, with Slider
claiming the opening goal of the 2003-4 season. |
3rd
XI: The
Thirds were strengthened by the inclusion of a few Wanderers, Wizards
and Warriors. Pete Thomas played a captain’s innings, opening the
scoring after 2 minutes. 3-0 up after 13 minutes Yate was already
in second place by that time. They did manage to pull a goal back,
but Westbury led 5-1 by half time. Some
very well taken goals and some poaching off the pads and post by
Pete for his hat-trick were just rewards for the excellent passing
game the thirds employed in the first half. However, Mark Crofts
second goal was full of luck. His powerful shot was well saved by
the goalkeeper only to hit the back of his own defender and ricochet
into the net. Umpire Village was adamant that Mark shouldn’t be
credited with the goal - but that’s just full back talk!
