XI: There was great jubilation
on the water based pitch when Tony Webster scored what turned
out to be a late winner against a Whitchurch side who put their
5-0 defeat of last week into some sort of twisted context, by
chasing the league leaders all the way to the finish. In some
quarters there was wonderment at how Whitchurch can lose to
a Torbay team thrashed 8-1 by our firsts, but the consensus
of opinion is that their national league squad players must
turn out occasionally for their twos. So with this being their
strongest line up, as witnessed by their fighting performance,
the three points were richly deserved. Twice Whitchurch came
back to equalise and even after going behind they had a series
of late short corners. Kinger and Co. stood resolute and the
points were duely taken. This was clearly a 'six pointer' and
a key moment in the first team's charge for a second successive
promotion. |
| 2nd
XI: The seconds found
Bath University a tough nut to crack and came away with a 4-3
defeat. One bright spot here was the return of Tim Hancock after
several winters of playing cricket (down under I presume). Tim
scored one of the goals and it will be interesting to see how
long it takes him to recapture the form that secured a place
in the first team during his previous spell with the club. |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds swept
away Wotton-Under-Edge. Having rediscovering how to score last
week, they banged in another seven this week. Small wonder that
Limbo looked pleased as he took his tally of goals into double
figures. |
| Wanderers:
The Wanderers turned in a star performance
against a determined O Bristolians team. The opening goal was
right out of the top drawer. Rich Batchelor used his pace to
attack the left side of the defence. His pass to Tufty enable
Steve to sweep in a pin point cross to Worny, who was coming
in at speed on the right hand side of the D. Worny's slap flew
high into the net for a stunning goal. (More about Worny's shooting
later!) Steve Carter's miss-hit short was deflected in by Rich
Batchelor. In the second half O Bs had most of the possession
and pressed strongly. The home defence weathered everything.
Paxo, who had to make several cracking saves during the first
period was not seriously called into action in the second half.
A small crowd (well Dunc, Mike Harvey and I are somewaht vertically
challenged) were treated to two fantastic goals from Tufty.
The first one came from both Tufty and Rich Batchelor swapping
passes at speed to open up the O B's defence. Thirty seconds
later, Tufty met the ball with a first time strike into the
roof of the net. The aging maestro, ever aware of his adoring
fans, rushed to the side line to share a high five with his
son, who had only just been cleaned up by mum after playing
in the mud! (Mud pies for tea Steve?) This was an excellent
result with a good all round team effort. In the closing stages
the pace of Rich Batchelor once again carved out a simple shooting
chance for 'goal ace' Worney, after another amazing run. With
the simplest of hit ins, Worny played his joker and shot wide
of an empty goal. However, the captain can feel that it was
a job well done today, and his has scored in each of his nine
games!
|
| Wizards:
An Alan Christopher goal earned a point for the Wizards at Gloucester.
|
| Warriors: The
Warriors could have learned a thing or two about attacking at
pace from the Wanderers (except that they played before them).
Both sides seemed to lose their momentum the further into the
attacking half of the pitch they went. However, the greater
experience of Frank Gibbs and Jon Bower gave them the edge in
midfield. Mike Harvey opened the scoring and Shep got his short
corner striking 'spot on' to score his first of the season.
In the scond half the Warriors only looked threatening down
the right when Jon Bower joined the attack. Frank Gibbs capped
a strong game with goal number three and Mark Coulton, having
controlled everything at the back in his sweeper's role, joined
the attack to score number four. The main incident of the game
came when a N Somerset player was so insensed by Jon Bower's
influence on the umpiring decisions that he earned a telling
off from his own captain and a green card. This came as a great
surprise that Jon, a Clark Kent look alike (you know - quiet
- unasuming) should be the cause of such great anger from his
opponent!
|
| Widgets: The
Widgets were up against it because one of their key players
somehow managed to be at Combe Dingle for 3.00pm instead of
the race course at Hereford, thus he never came under starter's
orders. A reduced field of runners and riders lost by 5 furlongs
to none. Tim Palmer revealed that everyone worked hard and they
had control of some parts of the game. An early goal and one
before half time meant that they became odds on favourites to
lose and that was confirmed with three more conceded in the
second half. The Widgets have been hampered by shortage of personel
for several matches, and it might be time for some thought to
be given to giving them a helping hand. It won't do team morale
a lot of good if they keep losing. Brain Callis and Sam Banting
were jointly awarded man of the match. |

XI & 2nd XI: The first and
second team both had their matches abandoned at half time. |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds secured
their first league win with an 8-2 victory against Shepton Mallet.
This moves them off the bottom of the table for the first time. |
| Wanderers:
The Wanderers continued their string of
powerful performances with an excellent result against great
rivals W Glos. The 6-2 winning margin suggests that they were
well on top.
|
| Warriors: The
Warriors had to draft in 4 Widgets to travel to Ross and were
unable to break down their deep lying defence. The Warriors
dropped to third in the table.
|
| Widgets: The
Widgets achieved better success in front of goal scoring three
times, but in conceding five they were unable to take any points.
Last week they moved off the bottom of the table (in spite of
not playing) because Cheltenham D have an inferior goal difference.
This week they stayed second from bottom because Cheltenham
lost again. |

The firsts, Wanderers and Warriors are
now all top of their respective divisions.
|
| 1st
XI: The first team swept aside
Torbay, the team that denied them promotion two seasons ago
in the play-offs. This makes the average score in the first
three matches a round 10. Tony Webster made it a hat-trick of
hat-tricks in successive weeks. |
| 2nd
XI: The seconds bounced
back to form with a decisive 5-1 victory against the students
from Swansea. They dominated the opening 20 minutes and scored
3 quick goals. Slider felt that they were average opposition
and Simon Baker said that they lost control of the game for
a spell in the first half, but worked hard in the second half
to score a couple more. JJ gave himself a 30 minute run out
and scored his first of the season. |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds are finding
life a little tougher with a close defeat at Gloucester. It
was such a memorable game that Chris Cutts and James Holiday
couldn't remember who scored their consolation goal! Limbo reported
that Greg South was the scoring, this being his first goal for
th club. |
| Wanderers
& Wizards: The Match of the Day saw
the Wizards leap into a 2-0 lead before the Wanderers had even
drawn breath. I was told that Duncan Ogilvie swept in the opening
goal PDQ, this was Duncan's 100th for the Wizards. The Wanderers
then got into gear and scored the 8 that the Captain of Vice
predicted. The Wizards finished strongly and scored the last
goal of the game. Both teams had late short corners disallowed.
The Wanderers have now scored 8 in each of their three league
matches. Andy Griffin scored three and I'm told Worny's was
a roof of the net job!
|
| Warriors: The
Warriors were on fire in the first half and a captain's hat-trick
from Pete Thomas helped them to a 5-0 lead. In the second half
Martin Palmer had his finger broken from a deflected pass from
Shep. (I've now had it manipulated back into shape and splinted
on Sunday morning!) Sam Parker created mayhem down Cheltenham's
left side of defence. Sam Banting performed well on his Warrior's
debut. |

| Comment:
A mixed bag of results today with some
high scores going both ways.
|
| 1st
XI: The first team made it 2 out
of 2 and a goals for column of 22. The first attack of the day
saw Bomber Harris cut down the right wing, Shadwell's tricky
skills earned a short corner, which was put away to start the
ball rolling. Tony Webster scored a PB with 5, whilst Frosty
continued his scoring run taking him to 26 goals in 6 games. |
| 2nd
XI: The seconds run
of 5 straight wins (6 if you count the last game of last season)
came to an end at Swansea. Leading 2-0 it seems they took their
foot off the gas. Pete Murphy who has earned his elevation up
the ranks after some outstanding games, could not put his finger
on where it went wrong. JJ wrote: with all the players unavaliable
this week due to injury and various activities the seconds only
travelled with one recognised half who had flu!!! It was very
difficult to chose a formation to accomodate the players but
no one felt they played well against a team we should have beaten!!
Going 2-0 up very early on was good, but then it went down hill
fast. We tried to get back into the game in the second half
but they always seemed to edge one goal further ahead! I hope
this is the only blip for the season. |
| 3rd
XI: The thirds were
unlucky to go 3-0 down having dominated the play against Firebrands.
Sparky had a chance to open the scoring but the keeper saved.
Firebrands had three chances and took them all. Greg South and
Gary Catchpole looked in sharp form pushing forward, but the
luck in the D deserted the third team forwards and they trailed
4-1 at the half. It never pays to let Firebrands have too much
of a lead and the second half saw them add only 3 more thanks
to some cracking saves from Steve Carter in goal. |
| Wanderers:
The Wanderers returned triumphant from
their trip to Gloucester with Ian Hipwell scoring his first
hat-trick for the club. That makes 16 goals in 2 games, and
just a minute, who is it next week....why the Wizards. - Watch
this space!!!
|
| Wizards:
The Wizards long winning run came to an
end against the student s from Bristol University. Alan Christopher
scored the Wizard's goal to give them the lead. Tufty reports
that Andy Griffin continued his comeback with another impressive
performance.
|
| Warriors: The
Warriors put last week's dismal form behind them and turned
in a powerful performance to beat N Bristol by 5-0. Mark Colton
pointed out that he scored with his first and last touch of
the game (although technically his first touch was injecting
the short corner that he finished off). Brian Nichols had another
solid game in the centre of defence, Dom Harris and Jon Bower
were in dominating form in midfield. This was a team effort
in which everyone played very well. |
| Widgets: The
Widgets gave a good account of themselves but ended up losing
by 3-1. |
| Veterans:
The Veterans travelled to Plymouth to
play Marjons of Plymouth. The team put up a valiant effort,
but the combination of loss of squad players, no subs and some
quality players on the opposition saw them 4-0 down by half
time. Westbury did have the first chance of the game and at
times played some neat passing moves, but Plymouth whittled
away at the defence and built up a commanding lead. At half
time the skipper changed the formation to combat their extra
man in midfield, and this kept them at bay for some time. They
did strike in a short corner and a stunning 'roof of the net'
goal to go 6-0 up. Adie Dann in goal then turned in a super
show to stop everything Plymouth threw at him. His agile saves
drew praise from the Marjons vets. TC (Senior) and Steve Alger
also managed to conjure two fantastic goal line clearences.
The long journey wasn't all in vain, because Pete Thomas nipped
in with a goal after good work down the left wing by Mike Harvey
and Martin Palmer. Pete then managed to get another. This time
Pete Farrell's short corner strike somehow managed to come to
a stop exactly on the goal line via a defender's foot for the
Warriors captain to tap in. We actually drew the second half
2-2! There were a few stiff bodies at the end of the match.
We were fairly beaten by the stronger side who play regularly
on Thursdays. We gave a good account of ourselves and never
gave up.
