XI: The first team returned from Cheltenham with a point which maintains
their position in 5th place in the Premier Division. Joe Thomas
and Shads scored the goals. |
|
2nd
XI:
The seconds took all three points in their home match v Cheltenham.
More from Slider soon. Here it is:
Wowzers! What a team performance this was. Coming into the game
with a couple of regulars missing, we spoke about discipline and
individual responsibility in all areas of the pitch and by jingo
did the lads do their jobs yesterday. Bees,
Warney and Catchpoley came in to replace the absentees and all performed
excellently under consistent pressure from a strong Cheltenham side.
Early on we struggled to gain possession as Cheltenham began strongly,
but once they began to sit back in a unnecessary half-court defensive
strategy we were allowed to pass more freely and hence our confidence
grew. On Ger's orders, the skipper took responsibility for marking
their playmaker and Reston moved into the middle with Village. We
went into half-time at nil-nil and asked for everyone to dig deep
in the second half. Boy did we play well second half. Each player
raised their game and we won practically every tackle . A swift
counter attack saw us sneak the lead through TC, nicely rounding
the keeper if I remember correctly. Paxo saved a short corner into
the valiant Ger who stopped the deflection on the line with both
stick and thumb... sadly that was the end for Ger... off he went,
thumb broken cursing his misfortune and a long evening in hospital
awaiting him. Changes were needed - Reston dropped to the back,
Limbo moved top diamond and ran his socks off in the middle, Village
sat deeper and controlled the middle with ease. Another break saw
Moondog make it 2-0 with 10mins to go. Cheltenham didn't know what
had hit them, better structure and more discipline had reaped its
rewards. TC then tucked into midfield in a pre-arranged plan and
we defended stoutly before earning a last minute short corner. 1
short, 1 goal with Moondog finding the corner with ease. 3-0 and
game over. This was an awesome win against a very strong side but
sheer determination to work hard for each other and sticking doggedly
to the gameplan worked wonders. We've moved 3rd now with a crunch
clash with top of the table Gloucester City to come next week. MAN
OF THE MATCH votes were shared between 8 of the team including Reston
2 votes, Warney 2 votes. The winner this week was decided with Ger's
vote from hospital making it 3 votes for the skipper. Cool! Ger
though gets a special award for bravery even though Terry said he
cried like a schoolgirl in hospital (I may have made that up). We
wish Ger a speedy recovery. |

XI: With the game tied at 1-1 a spell of Westbury
pressure caused all sort of panic in the visitor's D resulting in
a rash challenge that turned into a penalty stroke. JPS made no
mistake from the spot and the thirds were back in the driving seat.
The team were playing well, whilst Robinsons drove forward as a
unit but lacked the right pass, with 6 or 7 of their through balls
shoot over the back line beyond their own sticks. The game's comedy
moment came when Robinsons pressed forward only for the lights to
go out! Someone had turned off the wrong switch as the sand pitch
bereft on any players was lit up! It took a Bees hone call and ten
minutes for the lights to 'boot up' before the game could continues!
Robinsons still found the final pass eluding them. In contrast Nathan
Walkey and Hugh Woodward were causing trouble down the flanks. Nathan
cleverly wormed his way into the D and slipped the ball back to
Chewie to thump between the goalkeepers legs for 3-1. The break
had not done any harm for Westbury as they turned in a short corner
from JPS to complete a merited 4-1 win. |
Wanderers:
The wanderers fell to their second league defeat in a close game
against Firebrands. Fazza scored for the Wanderers, but the home
team who played well snatched the winner in the second half. |
Wizards:
The Wizards gave it a good go against N Bristol. Martin Rees cleared
the ball off the line from N Bristol's first attack. The visitors
scored twice in the first half, but Joel Chase slipped the ball
to Jon Fox who found the perfect reverse stick touch to guide the
ball past the keeper and over the line. Poker made a vital block
to stop a certain goal. N Bristol's second goal came after Martin
Eland had pulled off a brilliant point black diving save, but the
ball ran to a N Bristol player who tucked in into the net. The second
half saw good hockey played by both sides. Then came two penalty
strokes in as many minutes. Cocksy back foot stopped a goal, but
Martin Eland pulled off a save from the penalty stroke. At the other
end Westbury were awarded a stroke and Joel Chase gave a master
class in scoring. The game was end to end, with Will Holmes having
a good game down the right. N Bristol put together a very slick
passing move that ened with a wellplaced shot to give them a 4-2
lead. A green card for Westbury was followed by a yellow. The ten
men stuck at it, but N Bristol added a 5th. As the player returned
to the game a second yellow was issued and the last quarter of an
hour was played a man short. There was a lot of good play by Westbury
who gave it everything. |
Warriors: The
Warriors played in a scrappy match at N Bristol. The pattern of
the game was the same as last week, with some excellent defending
and some positive movement in the middle of the park. Pete Thomas
for the second week in a row received some good ball. His one cross
flashed across the goal, but no one got a stick to it. N Bristol
scored from a short corner. As the game wore on there were more
mis-directed passes which prevented Westbury from building any sort
of movement to pressure the home side. Mike Harvey had a good first
half. There were some neat touches from Pete Ratcliffe and Max Longden.
Max was given a bit of a hammering by his marker earning a damaged
finger that needed an x-ray at A&E, but proved to be bruised
and not broken. Westburys few shots all came from shorts with Max
coming the closest hitting a rebound from his dad's shot. Jez also
cleared a shot off the line. Once again the team worked hard and
JJ in goal was in superb form. His double save was outsatnding,
he also made a brilliant diving save only to see the ball run to
a home forward who scored. The team plays well in the defensive
two thirds of the pitch but come unstuck when everything gets tight
at the other end. It was good to see Pat Tampkins back in action
after a long lay off with injury. |
Widgets: The
Widgets found O Bristolians a much stronger and better organised
team than the side they have become used to playing. OBs ran in
seven goals. Shep struck a consolation from a short corner. |

XI: The first team recorded their 4th league win of the season.
Their 50% record places them in 5th place in Premier 1. Tim Hancock
struck twice and Frosty scored once. |
|
2nd
XI: The seconds were victorious at Bath Buccs
with goals from Slider, Village, Chris Butt and Stuart
Blake on his debut. |
3rd
XI: Third team returned to their winning ways
with a good result awat at N Wilts. Tommy Alger, JPS and Nathan
Walkey were on target. |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers had a bright opening to their local derby with W Glos
establishing a 2-0 lead with goals from Tufty and Jimmer. There
followed a period when the team went off the boil. Things then brightened
up as the Wanderers reasserted themselves and Tufty scored again.
W Glos pulled a goal back but Croftsy scored number 4. Late in the
game W Glos score once more but the points were in the bag and a
good result was achieved to wipe out last week's disappointing score. |
Wizards:
Somehow N Somerset were unable to raise a first team, although they
did field a second side. With a team, pitch and umpires likely to
stand idle the students from Bristol University were up for a second
game after playing their 'B' v 'C' team derby. The students ran
out winners, but the Wizards were able to have a competitive game
against a side that were fast and fit. Joel Chase scored a consolation
goal in a 3-1 defeat. |
Warriors: Imperial
scored early against the Warriors and then found the Warriors' defence
in a resilient mood with AJ, Jez and Dave Ratcliffe threw a barrier
that shut out Imperial. The home side scored a second goal, both
their goals came from short corners. There was a lot of good build
up play, but in the final third of the pitch the Warriors could
not conjure up the telling passes to open up good goal scoring chances.
In the second half Max Longden who had a fine game won a hit out
wide. Pete Tomas took it to Jamie Cranfield who struck from the
edge of the D to score. Imperial scored a third goal. The Warriors
worked very hard and it was good to see Paul Pritchard turn out
despite suffering a bad back and remind us of what he is capable
of. With two minutes to go Jez Longden struck a perfect short corner
shot to make it 3-2, but time ran out. At least we won the second
half! Imperial rotated their umpires at half time which may have
infringed rule 8.4 c) A “temporary” umpire must not
be part of rolling substitutions with players and must not be replaced
at half-time by a player who has participated in the first half
of the game. |
Widgets: The
Widgets battled out a 3-3 draw with N Somerset who are top of the
table. The Widgets surged into a lead and then swapped goals with
the home team so that the game was tied 3-3. As time expired N Somerset
had a short corner. They managed to get two more corners and on
the last, there was a frantic goalmouth scramble as the home team
had several goes to sweep the ball in, whilst the Widgets defenders
were stretched to stop them scoring. The umpire blew for an offence
and a point was secured |

XI:
Tezza's tale: Skipper Duncan was away this week, so Ii stepped into
the breach to take the reins as captain.
We were also missing our main man Tim Dawson so in came Chris Cutts
and Warney. This meant we had new players in the team and some usual
players playing out of position. Not ideal for the visit of top
of the table side 'Cardiff and UWIC'. In fact, Duncan's last instruction
to me before the game was "i'll take a point fella, i'll take
a point". The warm up was efficient but
we was lacking in any passion or emotion. The
game did not start well for us, in fact we were awful for the first
ten minutes. We gave them far too much respect and quickly found
ourselves 2 nil down.
After about 15 minutes, we settled down and realised that these
boys aren't actually anything special. We relaxed and started to
play some good hockey and finished the half the stronger side.
The consensus from everybody at half time was that this game was
far from over. We were in fact the better team and we were more
than capable of still winning it.We started
the second half on fire and it set the tone for the rest of the
half. After about 10mins Hugh picked the ball in their half and
magically beat three players before slipping the ball to Lambo who
neatly finished. The fight back was on.
We continued to push forward looking for that equalizing goal which
left us exposed; Cardiff had several chances to score on the break.
With seven minutes to go will still needed that goal. Then the magic
happened, while on the halfway line Moonie whispered in my ear "Tezza
we need to think about going three up front here". So i made
the call, Warney stepped off and Lambo came back on, it was all
or nothing. Ger was heard muttering I am "I am not sure about
this..."
With the extra forward on we pushed forward penning them back. Eventually
we won a short corner with 30 seconds to go. Up stepped Moon Dog,
who ghosted around the number one runner and smashed the ball under
the keeper and into the goal. Get in! The final whistle went and
it felt as good as win!Ger won the man of
the match award with an awesome defensive performance. With
a full side out and a decent start we would have beaten them by
a couple of goals. Maybe that opinion is a bit biased but who cares!
|
3rd
XI: The thirds played a belter of a game against
a strong Devizes side. Devizes scored in the opening minutes from
a short corner. A slick move ended with Nathan Walkey getting the
equaliser. Things were all square at half time. A deliberate back
stick by a Devizes defender allowed TC to score from the spot, but
Devizes countered with a quick equaliser of their own. Smurf pulled
off a great save only to see the ball fall to a visiting forward
who rifled it in to take the lead to 3-2 which is the way it ended.
There were a lot of good performances across the team which was
not a t full strength due once again to unavailability. |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers found Bristol University, the new league leaders,
too hot to handle. With a number of Wizards drafted and several
players playing in positions they were unfamiliar with, the defence
predictably leaked a substantial number of goal. Whilst Alex Taylor
on his return got one and Tufty two, the students ran in ten goals.
|
Wizards:
With the Wizards weakened by calls from above they took on Firebrands
and caused a shock by scoring the only goal of the first half. In
fact it was the only Westbury shot of the half! A smart Will Holmes
cross was deftly deflected past the keeper by Jon Fox. Firebrands
opened the second half with a goal from a short to tie things up.
A second goal from another short put them ahead. The Wizards' defence
played another storming game. Mike Harvey in goal made some crucial
saves and Poker, Reesy, Cocksy, Will Glynn dealt with everything
that Firebrands were able to throw at them from open play. Will
Holmes had a good game along with Dave George who harried the home
team in midfield. The Wizards lost one of their midfield at half
time who had another engagement. Playing one short did not help
the cause! |
Warriors: In
an end to end game neither side really got a grip of the game, and
passing moves were at a premium. At half time the score was 0-0.
W Glos managed to turn two of their attacks into goal, but the Warriors
were out of luck with their shooting. Harry Newington had a strong
game and Max Longden showed his growing potential. |
Widgets: The
Widgets were unable to repeat last seasons result (a comfortable
win) against Weston. Dave Money scored a consolation goal in a 5-1
defeat. |

XI: The first XI secured an important 2-1 win against Bristol University.
Mace and Goody scored the vital goals that pushed the firsts up
to 4th place. |
|
2nd
XI: Slider says: 9 points from the last 3 games
and we're only 3points away from the league leaders.
In truth we've played far better the last 2 weeks, with our structure
and game plan being much improved and each man carrying out his
individual responsibilities far better over the last few weeks.
As a team we've excelled. The Uni boys were
quick and never tired but for large periods of play we controlled
possession and should have created one or 2 more chances to kill
of the game. GOals came from a slipped left Nichols short-corner
strike and from Dawson playing a 'high-sweeper' role was found lurking
on the edge of the 'D' to roof it with ease.Man-of-the-Match votes
were shared by the skipper, Reston, Terry and Ger with the Vice
Captain Terrrrrence Wattttts deservedly gaining the award with a
tremendous performance. Onwards and upwards we go... |
3rd
XI: The thirds were knocked off the top spot when
City of Bath won their first game of the season with JPS getting
both the goals. Griff summed up the game in three words: Match report
- A poor performance ! |
Wanderers:
The Wanderers also slipped off the top of the table when they fell
to a 4-1 defeat to O Bristolians. Tufty scored the consolation goal. |
Wizards:
The Wizards conceded a first half goal against W Glos. JJ was playing
his second game in goal and pulled off one superb save in the opening
half and another in the second. Unfortunately the ball went to a
W Glos player who grubbed his shot and saw it trickle over the line.
The Wizards surged forward with some strong counter attacks, but
their penetration into the D was poor. Passes were intercepted by
the experienced W Glos defence who counter attacked and scored three
goals in three minutes. |
Warriors: The
Warriors put up a good show against Bristol UWE. Bristol scored
first but Dom Harris snapped up an equaliser when the home team
were unable to clear a short corner. The home team scored again
and Westbury were desperately unlucky not to get an equaliser. The
Bristol goalkeeper pulled off three brave saves. There was a lot
of good tackling and covering in the Warrior's defence, but the
home side still managed to add two more goals. Jez Longden, Dave
Ratcliffe, Brian Nichols and Will Enderby played well having to
face constant pressure. Dom Harris worked hard in midfield and created
a several scoring chances, but none could be taken. This was a spirited
effort by the Warriors. |
