| Comment:
5 wins out of 5 today with Adam Banting and Ian Small being
the top individual scorers. From 2nds to Warriors, the teams
are well placed in their respective divisions. The top of the
tables are shown below. |
| 1st
XI: Isca must have been still in the Arctic conditions because
the game was called due to a frozen pitch. |
2nd
XI:
The twos turned on a masterful performance to demolish Bristol
by 9 goals to 2. I saw TC's early trickery at the near post
for one of the goals, plus a thumping shot by Ben Tucker from
a short corner that didn't quite go to the planned routine,
it never-the-less ended up in exactly the right place when it
came back to Ben. Adam Banting stole the show with no less than
4 goals. Apparently one was a screamer! Slider writes: A dominant
team display saw us outplay a spirited UWE side with a the win
keeping us 2nd in the league. After a steady start, we gradually
took control of the game with an early goal from Goode and once
ahead we started to play some nice hockey. Our movement and
passing was excellent at times with Chris Cutts fitting nicely
into midfield and Benny pinging some quality passes around.
It was just a shame that we let them sneak two goals towards
the end. TC scored four times but was
cruelly only allowed two of them, Benny netted with a powerful
strike, the skipper scored a beauty (sort of) and man-of-the-match
Adam popped up with four tremendous second half goals. Well
done gents. A top display.

XI: The thirds were entertaining league leaders
Robinsons. JJ opened the scoring and then set up Limbo whose
deflection was masterfully turned into the roof of the net.
Limbo's next action was to race away past the defence to beat
the keeper with a thumping shot. Robs just couldn't cope with
his pace and several other breaks came close to goals. It was
no surprise when Limbo found the net once more to complete a
richly deserved hat-trick. Frank Gibbs Alan Sparks nd John Ludley
had the better of the midfield in this period of play. The second
half needed some reorganisation because the selected sub was
a no show and an aging veteran was called onto the bench. Frank
Gibbs was off with an injury and Robs scored three quick goals.
Frank felt that he hadn't done much during the game, but realised
that what he did do had shut down the visitors attacking options.
His absence gave Robs more room and they looked to be reclaiming
a result. The thirds had by this time reorganised in a 4 4 2
line up to restrict their opponents opportunities. There was
some resolute defending by Pete Billings, Nick Coats, Simon
Baker and Dave Watkins to prevent a Robs equaliser. Simon pulled
off a superb goal line clearance. Christian Bell then had to
retire after a nasty bang on the thumb. A Westbury short corner
saw a thumping JJ strike hit a foot on the line. Up stepped
Limbo for his 4th goal and a 5-3 lead. Next replacement sub
Martin Palmer's through ball from the half way line found JJ,
who skillfully beat his marker, went round the keeper and reverse
sticked his shot for a fine individual goal to seal the result.

Wizards:
Not a pretty game for the Wizards at S Glos reported Duncan
. Each side had the better of a half each without ever breaking
into any real quality. Goals from Alan Christopher and Geoff
Rickard made it a win for the Wizards to keep them near the
top of the table.

Warriors: The
Warriors gave a 'workmanlike' performance to defeat Bristol
who were the early leaders in this division. There were good
skills from Will Halliday and Will Enderby played his usual
game charging down most of the Bristol attacks that came through
his zone. Martin Eland used his feet well to keep out shots
put in by the visitors. Will Halliday opened the scoring with
a short corner strike. In the second half the Warriors took
more control of the game. The teams outstanding player (and
man-of-the-match) was Harry Newington. His pace and skill shone
out on a dark cold evening. Brian Nichols went on one jinking
run passing several players very skillfully. His pass sadly
went to a black shirt. Brian said afterwards that he looked
up to make the pass and no one was there! Perhaps the rarified
atmosphere of the opposing D had some part in his pass!. Tufty
made a cameo appearance following his broken ribs and set up
Mike Harvey whose pass across the goal actually found the far
corner to make the game safe. Will Enderby could have wrapped
it up completely. With the goalkeeper prone on the deck he picked
up the ball, entered the D and with an almost unguarded net
managed to place his shot wide. Wizards George Banting and Duncan
Ogilvie, aware that a third goal would put the Warriors above
the Wizards in the table, were heard to say. "Oh dear what
a shame Will missed" when they really meant "Phew
thank goodness that went wide!"

| The
freezing fog rolled in off the River Severn causing two matches
to be abandoned and the big Wizard v Warriors contest to be
postponed. The Widgets too were called of and it is hoped that
the match can be rearranged for next week as Robinsons are also
without a game. |
| 1st
XI: The first had their team photo (see Stats site opening page),
warmed up, started playing and then had to abandon as the freezing
fog invaded Coombe Dingle. |
| 2nd
XI:
The seconds had a physical encounter on a bumpy pitch at The
Dorcan with N Wilts. The twos did not exhibit the quality of
hockey that has been their trademark this year and somehow contrived
to let N Wilts score three times. At least it was a point, but
as Ger said it felt like a loss. Slider reports: After the quality
of last weekend's performance it seemed that at half time another
3points were there for the taking. A good first half saw TC
open the scoring with a neat, poaching finish and Chris Bell
calmly steal the second Christian has rejoined the club he started
at as a youngster and his last goal was scored for the club
10 years ago.. Another from TC (this time a P.Filck) saw us
reach half time 3-0 up. Then it all went
wrong... A spirited 2nd half North Wilts performance saw them
attack with aggression and intent, scoring 3 well taken goals
as we lost both our shape and our composure. In true Westbury
fashion, we continued to play attacking hockey when perhaps
we would have been wiser to shut up shop and in the end were
thankful to Clinty for avoiding defeat. Another cack tackle
from the skipper earnt a late yellow... bugger... sorry lads.
Back to winning ways next week against the UWE students.
|
| 3rd
XI:
The thirds returned from Portishead with a share of the points
with N Somerset. Simon Baker writes: The thirds were unlucky
to be 2-0 down with 3 minutes to play as we dominated in chances,
posession and territory. Limbo's pace and determination caused
continous problems for the opposition's midfield and defence.
Some of the umpires decisions were very questionable including
an apparent deliberate foot by Dave at the top of the D from
a short corner which resulted in a penalty flick. Their second
was very unfortunate as the ball deflected off Dave's stick
and flew over Paxo into the net. However
the thirds showed their battling to the end credentials once
again with the first goal coming from a slick move that resulted
in Sparky putting the ball across the face a mass goal line
scramble for Alex Taylor to score. We then forced our way forward
to get a short corner, the best short corner routine of the
game enabled Frank to sweep in from around the penalty spot
much to the dismay of North Somerset.Still
it's two points dropped which we must make up against Robinsons
next week. Firebrands lost again but at the moment Somerset
Gryphons are moving away. |
| Wanderers:
The Wanderers were in control for most of the game as the fog
began to close in around them. Jimmer claimed another grain
of sand for his growing beach collection, but the umpire wouldn't
be swayed and awarded a short corner, having decided that the
ball went in the goal off a defender not Jimmer's bucket and
spade. Not long later a foot on the line gave Gareth Nichols
the chance from the spot, which he took coolly. With under 5
minutes of the second half played, the fog closed in and the
umpires called it to a premature halt to be played again at
some time in the future. |
| Wizards:
With the Wizards not at full strength... |
| Warriors: ....and
several Warriors drafted into the Wizards, perhaps it was best
for both sides to have it postponed. When it is replayed both
teams will be more representative of their normal strength. |
| Widgets: With
the Widgets raring to go after last week's success, they were
unable to play because of the fog. If all goes well the match
could be scheduled for next Saturday |

| So
close to 7 out of 7, with the Widgets earning a well deserved
first league win, it was the firsts who lost by a slender margin.
|
| 1st
XI: Trips to Whitchurch can be a lottery depending on where
their National League squad are in action and how many of them
are in their second team. The 1st XI came close with goals from
Nellie and Baby, but even a share of the points eluded them. |
| 2nd
XI: The second team kept up their winning
run with just a single goal scored by TC. Slider writes: 2nd
place is ours at last! Played 8, Won 7, Scored 20, Conceeded
only 7. Usually a 1-0 scoreline suggests
a close, tense affair between two even sides... this 1-0 win
tells a different story though. Our best team performance of
the season (and of my 6-year Westbury career & JPS's 9-year
career) saw us demolish a Bath side who started the day 2nd
in the league. From the first to the last
minute, we controlled the game with an impressive display of
fluent, disciplined and patient hockey. Only our uncharacteristic
lack of composure in front of goal and a top display by their
keeper prevented us from netting more times. In every position
we came out on top. Another clean sheet from the boys at the
back... another dominant midfield display and another energetic,
aggressive attacking performance from the front 4.Benny
Tucker was outstanding, running the show from the first minute.
TC kindly popped up to get us the winner with a neat finish
from a Moondog assist, mid-way through the first half to get
us into a potential promotion spot.Well
done Gentlemen. |
| 3rd
XI: Limbo 'shouldered' the responsibility
for the last goal quite literally, adding to his earlier goal.
Tonka got his first goal of the season as the thirds keep in
contact with the league leaders. |
| Wanderers:
The Wanderers found themselves playing most of the first half
with ten men. Ben Jones saw yellow after an incident, but during
his rest period Tufty scored after a jinking run in the D. Ben
came back on, whilst Tufty was out injured after being bundled
over by the Yate player involved in the first incident Ben scored
when he pounced on the ball and flicked home. In the second
half Tufty returned and the Wanderers put on a super show of
slick passing, brilliant control and constant pressure. Worney
scored after an arcing run and a deft reverse stick slip pass
the goalie. Jimmer added two more grains of sand to his growing
collection (he'll soon have enough for an egg timer!) His first
was a clever reverse stick glide from a short corner hit to
him, the second he snapped up a loose ball from close in. Gareth
Nichols impressed with his skills and had two tap ins, but both
coming from well worked moves. The second came when he and Tufty
swapped passes several times before Steve gave him a measured
ball to score. Tufty finished it all off with a well struck
goal. This was an outstanding team performance with Smurf in
goal hardly getting a touch. Dave Watkins shone in defence and
charged down every short corner that Yate had, whilst 'new boy'
Alex ? showed some neat touches. This was win number 25 on the
trot in the league. Who is capable of stopping the Wanderers?
Any offers on them going unbeaten again this season? |
| Wizards:
Mark Crofts led the Wizards to a 3-0 win against N Somerset
with a hat-trick to keep the Wizards in the leading pack. |
| Warriors: Pete
Thomas reports: The Warriors got off to a commanding start against
a young Somerset Gryphons side. Rob Hughes nearly walked the
ball through a crowded ‘D’ into the opposition goal
from right field in the first 3 mins, but was denied by the
keeper. Both sides were giving away the ball far too cheaply
& whilst the Warriors defence were comfortable on the ball,
this advantage was squandered as the team went forward. Pete
Thomas settled the Warriors nerves after 12 mins to make it
1-0, however the remainder of the first half was played at a
frenetic pace with no real control in midfield by either side.
The Warriors relying upon their strong defence to ensure that
the game was played in the oppositions half. In
the second half the Warriors midfield started to take control
& a succession of short corners allowed Mark Colton to increase
the lead to 2-0. Further shorts brought Will Enderby his first
goal this season from Mark’s short & Mark’s
second made it 4-0. In the final 15 mins, Chris Millman came
on at centre forward and following a surging run down the right
Mark Colton delivered a perfect cross across the front of goal
for Chris to slot home. The final score being 5-0.Whilst the
result was well deserved, there were several frailties in the
Warriors performance, not least the inability to hold on to
the ball once possession was achieved, something that will not
go unpunished against stronger opposition. |
| Widgets: A
massive win by a slender margin for the Widgets was achieved
by the side's regular players. This was a 200% improvement from
last week. Brian Callis marshaled the defence well, Dave Holliday
was his usual solid self in the middle and new guys, Will Bowlem,
Harry Newington, Ed Lowe, Martin Reese and Dave ? were all prominent
in this win. Martin Palmer wove his way into the D to set up
John Fox to open the scoring. O Bs equalised when a lifted ball
was not penalised at one end, they broke away and scored. In
the second half Westbury dominated the play and were able to
pressure the visitors restricting them to a couple of break
aways and shorts. Will Holmes showed excellent skills attacking
the D from the right and was unlucky not to score. As the game
neared its closing stages, the Widgets had a short corner that
was misdirected, moved around the D before coming to Ed Lowe,
who hit a blistering shot into the roof of the net to the delight
of a small but vociferous crowd. The Widgets fully deserved
this win. Now they have something to build on. |

| The
top 6 teams all won today, sadly the Widgets slipped to another
defeat enabling Bees to keep his cheque book in his pocket |
| 1st
XI: At 2-1 down (when I arrived) the first team exerted a lot
of pressure on the Weston defence, with Nellie, Bomber and Mase
causing all sorts of problems down the right hand side. Mase
snapped up the equaliser, a short corner was then slipped to
the left which Frosty drilled in. Shadwell's goal came after
a great attacking move when Weston just couldn't cope with the
pace of the Westbury forwards putting them 5-2 up. Kinger later
kept out several short corners successfully, but Weston scored
when they picked up the rebound from his pads. Bomber earned
a rather harsh yellow for knocking the ball away. This was an
impressive second half which puts the team back on track. |
| 2nd
XI:
3-0 at Whitchurch is an excellent result against the top club
in Wales. Slide says: A positive and determined performance
saw us take 3 points from a hard working Whitchurch side, with
a 3-0 victory away from home. Within 10mins we were a goal to
the good, with sterling work from Gary setting up Moondog for
his 12th goal of the season for us (and his 5th on this very
pitch this season). Clintus Shoutalotatus Maximus made a couple
of classy saves during an even first half, before we took control
of the game early in the 2nd half. Gary neatly poached the second
following up Moondog's rebound and then Moondog 'got fouled
by the keeper' / 'tripped over his laces' / 'took a dive' (delete
as appropriate) to earn a Penalty flick which TC slotted home
with ease. A good, allround team performance
with Ger and Tim especially outstanding. The day was spoilt
only by a bizarre yellow card for Tommy Alger and a deserved
yellow for persistant fouling from the skipper. Well
done gents, we're temporarily in 2nd place until Bath Uni's
result against Cheltenham comes in. |
| 3rd
XI: It was 0-0 at half time, but a number
of crosses had flashed across the Yate goal just missing the
out stretched sticks of the home forwards and should have resulted
in a healthy lead. However, the control and quality of play
was stepped up. Limbo scored from the spot fairly late in the
half, followed by two from JJ and one from Adam Banting at regular
intervals. Andy Griffin and Nick Coats were well in control
at the back and its hard to recall Paxo having to work up a
sweat to keep out the Yate attack. This was a welcome win after
two close defeats. |
| Wanderers:
They don't come bigger than this for the Wanderers, the top
of the table class with the University. Jimmer opened the scoring
from further out than a grain of sand (or should it be a lump
of algae on the water?) The university equalised, but the Wanderers
countered immediately with a goal. Gareth Nichols finished off
the move. The students again equalised from the spot to tie
it up at 2-2. The Wanderers were given a stern test by their
closest rivals. The defence had to work hard to keep them at
bay. Tufty scored the winning goal which opens up a gap between
the Wanderers and the University at the top of table. This was
win number 24 in row and the toughest one yet. |
| Wizards:
W Glos looked the more dominant side in the opening half. Their
pace and passing made them look the more likely side to score.
Alan Christopher was unlucky with a close range deflection that
was well saved and W Glos cleared one off their line. It seemed
inevitable that W Glos would step up the pace and go on to win
the match. Last season that would have been the case - but not
this season. The Wizards upped their performance and W Glos
had to cover a much deeper zone and were unable to attack in
any great strength. Ian Hipwell and Matt Taylor caused mayhem
down the right and Geoff Rickard looked in sharp form. Mark
Crofts was back to the form that makes him a danger to opponents
in midfield. Ian Hipwell opened the scoring, a Matt Taylor strike
made the game safe and Mark Crofts penalty stroke wrapped it
all up. That makes it 5 wins and a draw in all league matches
against our local rivals. |
| Warriors: The
Warriors notched up their fourth league win with two goals from
Graeme Brown and one each from Rob Hughes, Sam Parker and Will
Lee. |
| Widgets: The
bottom team (the Widgets) played the second bottom team (S Glos)
and it was the home side, so often the whipping boys who played
all the hockey. Their passing and hitting was far more accurate
and creative. Harry Newington caused the most problems for the
home team, but his final ball was generally wayward and there
were practically no scoring chances created. The Widget's defence
was all at sea and let in two sloppy goals. Martin Palmer's
short corner flick into the roof of the net just before half
time restored some hope. The second half saw more of the same.
Harry was very fortunate not to get a yellow card, he got a
green for some awfull stick tackling from behind and then tried
to stop a home player taking a free hit. His late run nearly
produced an equaliser. The game was made safe for S Glos by
former Wizard Pat Humphreys last minute goal. It is hard to
see where the first league win is going to come from if we were
out played by a team th | | |
