Match comments

1st XI: Although Yatton were comprehensively beaten by the first team, Bees felt the team had not reached his high expectations of them and that they never really reached the standard of play he wanted. Yatton somehow chose to play in maroon that did not seem that much different to our red & green. This accounted for a number of stray passes! Tony Webster completed a hat-trick, his first goal was of a strange design. Standing unmarked in front of the Yatton goalkeeper, Ben Tuckers long pass found Tony, but in controlling the ball it flipped up to shoulder height. As it came down Tony, with his back to goal, hit it reverse stick on its downward flight past the bemused goalkeeper.

2nd XI: The seconds travelled to North Wilts and came away losers by the closest of margins. This second defeat puts a dent in their promotion drive.
3rd XI: Gavin told me that the thirds were never in top gear at Hereford, but maintained their unbeaten run on what in some ways is a difficult pitch at the racecourse. Nick Evans put them ahead, but Hereford equalised. The winning goal came from a Tonka short corner strike. Gavin now shares reaching 20 goals by the end of November with two other players. His main aim is to help his team win each week, his goal-scoring streak is a bonus.
Wanderers: The Wanderers had the better of the first half and Gary Catchpole followed up his own first shot to score with a powerful drive. The Wanderers seemed to lack shape going forward and at one time had nine outfield players defending their own D with only one player up front. Chris Cocks told me they had enough play in the second half to have won the game but Hereford’s early second half equaliser was the only other school. Strangely on a day when two of the most promising young players in the Warriors were omitted from selection, the Wanderers had no subs due to late cry offs.
Wizards: The Wizards came away from Imperial with a resounding 4-0 win. Imperial has been a graveyard for results (six successive defeats) in previous campaigns, both in terms of coping with their unorthodox umpiring and the enduring the physical pounding they give their opponents. Clearly the Wizards were too strong for Imperial this year.
Warriors: The Warriors took the lead against a Firebrands team that look ed weak at the back. Unfortunately decisive passes and slick play were at a premium as the Warriors were unable to dominate a game that was there for the taking. When the team did attack with some positive play Dominic Harris with the help of a deflection, put the team ahead. In the second half the passing was awful and an ill-judged attempt by our sweeper to beat a Firebrands forward inside our own 25 ended up with the ball in the back of our net. With Dave Holliday, Austin Sheppard, Tim Palmer and Gareth Nichols missing after their key roles in last week’s excellent performance we never looked likely to break through to score a winner. Firebrands had the best chances in the second half when Martin Eland rose to the occasion with some good saves. Steve Alger also had a solid game in defence. The rest of us need to improve a lot before next week’s top of the table encounter with Old Bristolians.

Comment: On the day when Johnny Wilkinson’s boot won the World Cup in rugby, some of our leading scorers took a back seat as three teams drew 2-2, with all six sides notching 2 goals apiece! Still its an unbeaten Saturday. It will be interesting to see how the goals came in the other draws. The thirds maintain their runaway position at the top of their division
1st XI: The first team drew 2-2 with Lansdown. Village and Bomber were the scorers.
2nd XI: The seconds also managed a home 2-2 draw with Llandaff. Slider and Hugh Barnes knocked in the goals.
3rd XI: The thirds saw off Leominster by 2-0 Tonka and Martin Ashby got the vital goals, whilst the defence kept a clean sheet.
Wanderers: 2-2 draw number 3 was gained at S Glos. Tufty and James Holliday scored.
Wizards: Barrel and Duncan were the goalscorers as the Wizards won a close encounter with Bristol.
Warriors: The Warriors came from behind with a last minute equaliser. An accurate short corner push-out from Tim Palmer was stopped for Shep to strike a thunderbolt to gain a deserved point in this top of the table clash. Shep and Martin Eland were joint man-of-the-match.

Match comments
1st XI: The first team resumed their winning ways to remain unbeaten in Division 1 with their 5th straight clean sheet in league matches. Although they are not scoring quite as prolifically as last season, their defensive strengths can be see by the number of ‘shut outs’ of their opponents.
2nd XI: The second team juggernaut was derailed at Neath ending their 10 match unbeaten run with a first league defeat. Skip reports that: We were on the back-foot from the start & were 2 down after 10 minutes & never recovered. This was a very physical game that we failed to get a grip of. They were a good side who played well, whereas we offered very little especially in the 1st half. We have a very tough game next week against Llanishen, but a win would put us right back in it.
3rd XI: The thirds came away with three goals and three points from Newent to maintain their place at the top of their division. Its good to see the thirds back to winning form after several disappointing seasons. The ‘goal machine’ was restricted to one goal, but reaching 20 goals before the end of November is a hell of an achievement. I’m sure Feymous might trawl through the Stats pages to see if it has been achieved before. Its similar to scoring 1000 runs in county cricket by the end of May. Gavin must have his sights set on the club record of 52 and the third team record of 44 set by Dave Money in 1996-97.
Wanderers: The Wanderers won a physical match with Cleevillians with some clinical finishing. Nick Evan’s goal from a superb piece of wing play from Sam Parker was the ‘pick of the bunch’. It was a solid team performance with everyone playing well. This win against one of the higher placed teams in the division moves the Wanderers back into promotion contention.
Wizards: The Wizards once again came up short against a Lansdown team that had never previously beaten them in 5 league games (a 6th game was a Wizard’s walk-over). The Wizards don’t seem to be able to put any consistency into their results and the goals have dried up after their early season burst of scoring.
Warriors & Widgets: The Warriors v Widgets game gave a first opportunity for a number of youngsters to play their first Saturday club game. This was a game of high quality considering the limited experience of the youngsters. They showed good skills and positioning sense. Pete Murphy made some outstanding saves in goal, and Richard Gee at the other end wasn’t far behind him. Tim Palmer had a brilliant game in defence and Gareth Nichols capped a fine game with the ‘goal-of-the-match’.

Match comments
Comment: 6 out of 6 again (29-3), well done to all the sides. Good wins again for the top 3 teams cementing their positions in 1st or 2nd place in their divisions.
1st XI: The first team played a lively and energetic student team. Tony Webster reported that the good thing this season is the patience of the team, they don’t panic if they are not 3-0 up inside 10 minutes.

In Sundays cup match the first team led 3-2 into the closing stages of the match against another young, fit student team from two divisions above. The first were six players short of their usual side but still gave Exter University a good run for their money. A late equaliser was followed by an Exeter golden goal. Never-the-less the firsts gave a good account of themselves.

2nd XI: (Skip’s thought of the day) Not the blood & thunder this fixture has thrown up in previous years, but with the score 0-0 at half time, it was almost as frustrating! Once we got ourselves ahead (Moonie) we were cruising & finished winning 4-0 with the other goals from JJ (2) & TC. A nice trip to Neath next week & hopefully 3 more points to add to the 14 we currently have. By the way we are joint top of the division with W Glos. Up the red & green!

3rd XI: Sparky’s Sparklers snuff out Firebrands! The thirds won well against the Firebrands Vets side, familiar to many from New Years Day. For 50 minutes out of 70 our team was too quick and passed too well for them to get a look in. Even our sloppy bit was good for our league. (Notes from Sparky)

Wanderers: The Wanderers thrashed Long Ashton. Not a great performance (says Tufty) against 9 (including an ex national league and an inspired goalkeeper - well, he saved most of mine anyway!)

Wizards: The Wizards posted a clear victory to complete a league whitewash of all our opponents today.

Warriors: The Warriors were 1-0 down and then 2-1 down to a S Glos team who exposed gaps in our usually solid defence. We pulled it back to 2-2. Although we never played a great deal of flowing hockey, we did enough in the second half to pull away from our opponents. Shep was unlucky that his deflection in the D was not spotted by the umpire and therefore not given as a goal. This fired us up to win the game with the last goal scored by Mike Harvey coming from our best move of the game.
