Westbury & United Banks HC: Results for Summer League 2006 (Newest results at top of page)

Week 16
15/8/06  4th XI ('C')  v L Ashton Frys 'A' Div 4 4-2  Watkins 2 Small Palmer M
16/8/06 4th XI ('C')  v Shepton Mallet 'A' A Div 4 1-3  Harvey

Palmer's prattle: At long last the 'C' team finally broke their duck with a good win against Frys. It was the visitors who opened the scoring, but Westbury got stronger and stronger as the half wore on and were unlucky not to get an equaliser. The keeper and a post denied us a number of times. A squad of 15 were rotating on and off and our superior fitness told by the end of the game. Stig popped up on the far post to slam in an equaliser. As he ran back in celebration the instructions from the bench were..."Don't push so far forward, hang square for the ball and let Graeme play his right wing position!" A bemused Stig grinned and said "Didn't I just score?" In fact it was Stig again who after some good work down the right by Sam Parker put us ahead. With Limbo, Matt Deacon and Si Andrews prompting from midfield we had good control of the game. However, it still needed some smart covering at the back and good foot work from Sam Banting to keep the lead. With time running out Limbo made the game safe after jinking his way into the D and hitting the far corner of the goal. Limbo also put in a superb through ball to the skipper who made up for his awful shooting in the first half by going round the keeper and flicking into the net. Frys won a short corner as time expired and were able to score from it to make the final score 4-2. This was a much deserved win especially for the players who have played in the losing games and showed that we never give up.

At Shepton Mallet we were once again up against some quality players. Their first goal came after a brilliant run by their best player and a thumping shot. Tim Palmer then cleared off the line and Sam Banting stood up to everything thrown at him. We then had a good spell and created a couple of chances. Nathan Walkey playing his first game for 14 years was unlucky with a shot that the keeper saved. Shepton scored a second goal when a short struck Pete Thomas above the knee (well above 18 inches) but it was deflected down onto the backboard and the goal given. The umpire later admitted he didn't see the high hit on the leg! In the second half another battling display was helped by regular substitutions especially as 8 players had played the night before. A third goal was conceded when a 16 yard hit was squared by mistake to a Shepton forward, and a few touches later we were 3-0 down. Towards the end with our first and only short corner Mike Harvey picked up Si Andrews rebounded shot. Throughout the game at sweeper Mike had dribble/wobbled/jinked his was out of the D with every possession. In his one foray to the opposing D he didn't mess around and his first time slap gave us a consolation goal. Mike also moved to the top of the leader board, this being his third summer goal! In losing 8 games we never gave up and worked hard to make a game of it. In this game like several others we drew the second half! Many thanks to everyone who turned out, and special thanks to Andy Cooper for umpiring 6 of our games.

Week 14
1/8/06  1st XI    v Robinsons A Div 1 2-3  Richardson 2
2/8/06 2nd XI ('A')  v Torpids H Div 2 2-3  Moon Wornell
Torpids played in their typical blustery fashion, but also showed a lot of deft skills. Their combination of power and intimidation has seen them win this division. Torpids had the better of the opening ten minutes and looked very dangerous attacking the D. Stick tackles were well in evidence as Westbury were unable to make much progress forward. However, they did score first from a Moonie short corner strike. Then came two terrific strikes from Torpids short corners either side of the half time break to put them 2-1 up. Clint made two incredible saves to deny Torpids from scoring, but midway through the second half they created a well worked goal. Westbury were on the end of some unusual decisions as Torpids pressed for a fourth goal. In the last ten minutes Westbury put together their best passing movements and finished with a well taken goal just before the final whistle from Worney. This was a good workout against a Premier side who were not afraid to throw their sticks and bodies in where it hurts.
Week 13
25/7/06  3rd XI ('B')    v Somerset Gryphons 'A' H Div 3 3-1  Jones 3
26/7/06  2nd XI ('A')  v Shepton Mallet A Div 2 5-1  Webster 2 Small Billings Watts
Strange goings on down in cider country... more on that later. A new look second team travelled down to Somerset - the skipper had dropped some big name players - Alger, Poulsom, Moon, Catchpole and Gibbs and brought in some untried youngsters - Carter, Wornell, Richardson and Watts. Also making a welcome return to hockey was Struan who suffered a fractured cheekbone at the end of last season. We started the game a man short and all was going well with two early goals from Webster and Limbo until Ger turned up late - we didn't score for the rest of the half! A very good first half with plenty of endeavour in the heat, quick passing and movement off the ball. The second half brought more of the same, Webster added a third, and then a penalty stroke resulted in the skipper scoring his first goal for Westbury in three years. From that point on it all got rather surreal. Terry scored number five, appearing to spin the ball through the keepers pads after a great cross from Cuttsy. Ger then opted to play left wing with Tony "covering" at the back in his place - consequently Carter became busier making several smart saves towards the end. JPS went off injured and no-one, apart from Nellor, noticed for about ten minutes, and they got one back right at the end when our new sweeper went awol. 5-1 - a great result, and a win next week should see us finish in the top two.Highlights: the execution of the stroke; Ger on the left wing; the fourth goal; playing brilliantly with ten men; the skipper scoring; Cuttsy using women's scented moisturising shower cream after the game.

Coatesy's corner: The final summer league game for the thirds and after a few poor performances in recent weeks the team responded with a good display that eventually saw us end the season 3-1 winners. Westbury had the best of the opening encouters with some good passing and movement but that seemed to stop and we allowed 10-men Gryphons to get back into the game. The first goal against the run of play was scored by Westbury. Ben Jones pounced on a rebounded shot from Gareth Nicholls.Just before half-time Poker must have felt sorry for Gryphons with their 10-men as he felt he should even it up and presented their forward with the ball to cross it in and was finished on the back post. After the half-time Westbury were slow to get off the blocks and took time to get back into the game. The all round passing then started to improve and with 10 mins to go the break through came that Westbury were looking for. After continued pressure, Jimmer found Gareth Nicholls on the left side of the D who crossed it in for Ben Jones to flick into the net. The opposition tired and Westbury were able to counter attack with more ease now. The final goal was started from a 16 yard hit played down the left and eventually finished by Ben Jones who grabbed his hat-trick with a well taken undercut in (perhaps) his last game for Westbury.

Week 12
18/7/06  3rd XI ('B')   v Bath Buccs 'B' Div 3  2-5  Jones Bell
19/7/06  1st XI    v Flames H Div 1 2-3  Parish 2
Webster's waffle: For most of Wedesday's game it was a joy to play in, with prem 1 ahead it is good to play against a classy opposition. Westbury started strongly and could have taken an early lead with several chances going just wide At the other end some clever play by Brands couldn't get past Kinger who had an inspired game. Westbury took the lead with a well drilled short corner by Jonny Parish. Brands came back with a short of there own. 1-1 at half time. Early in the 2nd half it was 2-1 Parish again, but it was soon 2-2, even though we could have put the game out of site with 4 or 5 good chances. This is where things went pear shaped with Nellie fouled at least 2 times on the top of their 'D' - no decision given! Brands then went up the other end and scored. I still felt there was something in the game, when with 7 minutes left their right back made a better job of throwing his toys out of his pram than the Westbury left winger and the Brands umpire, who after this performance should stick to under 8's 5 aside blew up saying she had had enough. I'm glad she has never umpired a Westbury v West Glos game! One other point is that it was Westbury's game and she never even consulted the other umpire our own Mr Small!
Week 11
11/7/06  3rd XI ('B')    v Clinkers H Div 3 0-3
11/7/06   2nd XI ('A')  v L Ashton Frys A Div 2 4-4 Moon 2 Catchpole Webster
12/7/06  1st XI    v Somerset Gryphons H Div 1
12/7/06  4th XI ('C') v N Bristol 'B' A Div 4 2-3 Ogilvie Newington
Platform's prose: The 2nds put in a stirling second half performance to turn around a 3-1 deficit at half-time and draw the match 4-4 - among the goals were Moonie, Catchpole and Webster. A poor first half saw us 2-0 down early on after some very swift counter-attacks caught us short at the back. After pulling one back, we spurned several short corners which came back to haunt us as Frys scored from their solitary short corner near the end of the half. A Ben Tucker inspired tactical switch at half time saw Tommy A and Cuttsy switch positions in midfield and this, along with a lot more effort and better marking did the trick. Moment of the match was their stand-in veteran goalkeeper who had an arthritic hip saved from Tony from just two yards out - one for the scrap book. Great second half, thanks to all the guys and to Nick M for umpiring - and Tommy, it's not a good idea to kick the ball when your stick is ten yards away!

Coatesy's corner: Westbury B 0 - 3 Clinkers..It seems a long time ago now that the below was written by Junior Bottle about Carter..."I would like to pay tribute to the performance of Sergeant Bilker (aka Capt of Vice) at the cricket on Saturday. Not for his quickfire 50 (anyone can do that if you get dropped so often) but for his intervention when the game seemed about to degenerate into fisticuffs"....and how different a couple of days can be. Same person, different sport, different outcome (more of that in a minute).Anyway Westbury for the first half were not even in the game in every department we were coming off second best resulting in us going 2-0 down to two short corners. And then the incident.....Carter made a tackle on the edge of our D, started to take the ball out of defence and then had one of the Firebrands youngsters proceed to dive and clatter Carter round the ankles in a very poor tackle...Lets just say the ball still with Carter went very quickly back towards the youngster at a rate of knots. Yellow card handed out and Carter did not return for the rest of the game. Down to 10 men and funnily enough we actually starting playing hockey and a much better performance from the team.....we still lost another goal with the game final score 3-0 to Clinkers .Thanks to Duncan for stepping in at the last minute and to Tonka for umpiring (he wasn't the one to give the yellow).

Palmer's prattle: The 'C' team once again gave it a good go, but fell to their 7th straight summer defeat. Martin Fey was outstanding at sweeper despite having to go off just before half-time when a N Bristol player tried to rearrange his nose from the inside. The home team scored first, but a great pass from Pete Thomas gave Duncan Ogilvie time and space to beat the keeper for an equaliser. Pete (at left midfield) and Mike Harvey (at left back) were asked to play out of position but still gave strong performances. Harry Newington timed all but two of his tackles to win a lot of ball and cause a few problems to the home defence. The two badly timed tackles deserved cards, but he got away with just one green. He was being marked by former Westbury player Nick Foxwell, who has had more clubs that Tiger Woods, and in true Christian Renaldo style was appealing to the umpire to send Harry off. N Bristol were the better side and played the better hockey. They took a 3-1 lead in the second half. Westbury fought back after Sam Banting had made some very good reaction saves. A short corner was slipped by Feymous to Harry who hammered it in. A couple of chances to equalise did cause the N Bristol defence some stress, but we lacked the quality ball to really create clear cut openings. N Bristol held on for a 3-2 win. Yes it is seven defeats, but we've only played one half of poor hockey in all those games, and worked our socks off in every match against teams drawn from higher up their club's pool of players. Maybe we should look at how we select our squads for next summer to give the 'C' team more of a chance. All credit to everyone who played and gave 110%.

Week 10
4/7/06  4th XI ('C')  v L Ashton Frys 'A' Div 4 Pst   To be played on 15th August

Week 9
27/6/06  3rd XI ('B')  v Chippenham H Div 3 2-1  Jones 2
27/6/06  4th XI ('C')  v N Somerset A Div 4 1-4  Harvey
30/6/06  1st XI   v Bath Buccs A Div 1 5-6  Webster 3 Roper Harris
Webster's waffle: Near the end of last season the 1st team went down 6-5 to Buccs, in a game when we fought back from a losing position to draw level at 5-5, only to see Buccs go down the other end and grab the winner. Friday night, same score same comeback, Buccs again grab the winner. Westbury once again not at full strength (a lot of players on gardening leave it seems) played there heart out. Dave Wornell worked his socks of even after splitting his finger half way threw the first half. Adam Banting never stopped running. Buccs having 15 players to westburys 11 swapped players around at will. Also Buccs who rarely have people watching them, showing what a great club spirit they must have, this time had a few halfwits on the side jeering and barracking. SCORE BUCCS 6 WESBURY 5 SCORERS ROPER HARRIS WEBSTER 3

Coatsey's copy: A strong first half performance saw Westbury go into the break at 1-1 with at times some good attacking play, only to let ourselves down with simple mistakes. The ball was often given away cheaply which ultimately lead to Chippenham's opener. Luckily for Westbury Chippenham seemed to go off the boil allowing Ben Jones to get the equaliser a couple of minutes before half time. The second half performance improved on the first with Westbury controlling the pace and the game. There was improved running, passing, marking and overall pressure. In the end Westbury got the goal that they were looking for after a good passing move Ben Jones got his second of the game. It was then a case of hanging on for the final whistle. All in all that was probably the best thirds display of the season - well done guys. Thanks to Chris Bell and Sparky for doing their stints at umpiring.

Palmer's prattle: The 'C' team rose to the challenge of playing N Somerset 1st XI. Their performance was outstanding, the defence of Sam Banting, Feymous, Tim Palmer, Martin Rees and Paddy were superb, keeping out everything the home team threw at them. In midfield George Banting, Alan Christopher, Mike Gossage, Dom Harris and Mike Harvey in various combinations kept control of the ball and put together some sharp possession. The Cs surprised N Somerset by taking the lead. Feymous's shot found a foot on the line and Mike Harvey slotted home the penalty stroke for a 1-0 half time lead. The home side were rattled and things became a bit verbal which showed how shocked they were by the way we were playing. Unfortunately the home team managed to scramble an equaliser followed a few minutes later by the go ahead goal. Two late goals made it look a big defeat, but be assured the C team put in a massive performance and should take a lot of credit from the game. Comedy moment of the match was watching Dom 'I've lost the way' Harris trying to get through the building site to get to the pitch. He made it on the third attempt!

Week 8
21/6/06  1st XI   v Bristol Indians  H

Div 1

0-3

Week 7
13/6/06 2nd XI ('A')  v N Bristol H Div 2 3-1  Webster 3
13/6/06  3rd XI ('B')  v Imperial H Div 3 6-1  Taylor A 3 Coates Rickard Wornell
14/6/06 4th XI ('C')  v Shepton Mallet 'A' A Div 4 pst
16/6/06  1st XI v Robinsons A Div 1 pst
Tony W put in a legendary second half performance scoring a hat-trick to turn the game around after a deficit at half time. The 3-1 scoreline reflected our all round dominance in what was a much improved performance on recent weeks and their keeper kept the scoreline down with several outstanding saves. Everybody contributed well and thanks to George for umpiring.

Coatsey's copy: It was once again a tale of two half's. In the first half, Westbury were at times looking dangerous. The defence providing good cover at the back and the midfield and forwards working well to get the ball into the final third of the pitch - but alas leading to nothing. For the other times however, we were second to the ball, poor movement often resulting in the wrong option for the final ball being chosen. We had a lucky break in the first half when Westbury corner was struck in by John Ludley and deflected in by yours truly. The opposition starting to control the game and ended up grabbing the equaliser after a promising Westbury attack broke down. Half time and 1-1. The second half however proved more promising. The running off the ball improved with that came the improved passing and eventually the goals that we needed. A through ball was picked up by Geoff Rickard who had his initial shot saved but was able to smash in the follow up into the far side netting. Alex Taylor grabbed a tab in after a well worked (???!!!!) short corner. Alex Taylor then went onto grab two more goals - both reverse stick (the first of which into the top corner (after a deflection)). And to finish Worney capped off a star performance of shadowing their star player with a well taken goal after good work from Ben Jones. The final result ending 6-1 and a much improved Westbury performance . Thanks also to Tonka for Umpiring.

Week 6
6/6/06 1st XI v Stokers H Div 1 2-5  Webster Roper
6/6/06 4th XI ('C') v Robinsons 'C' Div 4  0-6
7/6/06 2nd XI ('A')  v Thornes A Div 2 1-1  ?
9/6/06 3rd XI ('B')  v Rascals A Div 3 0-3
Webster's waffle: I don't no if everyone felt as much pain as me losing to the old enemy so badly the other night, but it did make me realise how much hard work is ahead, with pre season training -about six weeks of it and then prem 1 looming, anyone taking the summer of should start thinking about there own fitness now. Score West Glos 5 Westbury 2 scorers Webster and Roper.

Coatsey's copy: Well it was a hot night away in Bath to a strong Rascals side. Not much to report on really as we were comfortably beaten 3-0 (could have been more with them hitting the metal work 3 times). We struggled to control the midfield with three defenders acting as midfield players. Losing position all too easily allowing the opposition to throw another attack at us. Saying that though, Rascals are top of the table with 4 wins out of 4 so all not too bad (at least we won't have to play them again). Thanks to the team for giving up their Friday evening.

Palmer's prattle: Duncan Ogilvie observed that his last game as Wizard's captain was game number 666. He followed up this with the Robs game on 6.6.06, wearing the number 66 and losing by 6. "Spooky" he said. A very sharp Robinsons team scored after just 18 seconds and again a minute later. We were unable to make any impact on the game and within 15 minutes we were 5-0 down. It would have been 10-0 had it not been for some great saves by Sam Banting and two goal line clearances by Steve Alger, the first with the help of his leg (the umpire said there was a man behind him and didn't give the stroke) and a reverse stick deflection. Only Alan Christopher offered any bite in attack. The half time talk was about restoring out dented pride, we reorganised putting Alan Christopher as an extra midfield player and using just two forwards. We opened the half with an excellent passing movement and played much better. Robs were stifled in midfield and we created more chances. Only one more goal was added late in the game. A much better performance in the second half restored some of our self-belief. Robs were the better side and they had a young player in midfield who was in a class of his own, it was his skillful play in the first half that was our downfall.

Week 5
30/5/06 4th XI ('C') v Vinyards H Div 4  3-4  Christopher Thomas Alger S
30/5/06 2nd XI ('A') v Mid Somerset A Div 2 2-5 Poulsom Small
Platform's prose: The sun was out for a chanege the beer in the pub afterwards excellent what happened on the pitch is best left forgotten. The first half was dire, from back to front we were all second best to a team who were clearly more up for it than we were. 2-0 down at the break we collectively assumed responsibility for poor defending, sloppy passing, a lack of movement and no cutting edge. The second half saw more endeavour and we got into good positions on many occasions but the final ball or shot weren't quite accurate enough, and we continued to get hit on the break. Final score was 2-5, with goals from Poulsom and Small, a scoreline which flattered the oppo but they deserved the win .Many many thanks to Nick Morton for making the trip to Wells to umpire and to the team for keeping their cool when their tackling was agricultural. Hopefully next week we'll be up for it and Mooney will be skipper so "fire in the bellies" is a prerequisite!

Palmer's prattle: The Cs took advantage of the late arrival of the Vinyards (Old Bs) keeper by taking an early 2-0 lead through goals from Alan Christopher and Pete Thomas. We didn't play as well as in previous games and were caught in possession and guilty of some poorly directed passes. When Vinyards keeper arrived and they had 11 men, they began to take control, having a first team player gave them that extra edge in midfield. Westbury's defence held out with sam Banting using his pads brilliantly to block everything they threw at him. Unfortunately with the last hit of the half they pulled a goal back. The second half saw Vinyards press forward keeping us on the backfoot. Wen we did go forward it was not in sufficient numbers to cause too many problems. Vinyards scored an equaliser and then added two more. In the spirit of Westbury C, we never gave up and in the last 10 minutes put together our best hockey of the game. Our one and only short corner was won as time expired. Up came everyone as is usual for these events. The ball came back to the unlikeliest of strikers in Steve Alger (with just one goal to his name). Steve struck the ball and in true Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb fashion, the ball bounced over several defender's sticks and the keepers foot, just inside the post, a goal we all enjoyed (on Steve's behalf) despite us ending up 4-3 losers. Once again we gave it everything against strong opposition.

Week 4
23/5/06 4th XI ('C') v Chippenham 'A' H Div 4 1-2  Fey
23/5/06 1st XI v Bath Cobwebs A Div 1 5-1  Mason 2 Webster Haslett Harris
24/5/06 2nd XI ('A') v Blazers H Div 2 3-1  Moon 3
25/5/06 3rd XI ('B') v S Glos A Div 3 2-1  Taylor A Sparks

Small talk: It was a good game where hard work made up for the general rustiness of the team, with good performances from everyone but especially Tim, Tony and TC.

Webster's waffle: Iit should have been 7 if not more, core was 5-1. Mason 2, TC, Village and Webster, a great team effort beating a team who have been our close rivals over the past couple of years, I think Kinger also deserves a mention making some great saves when we had our usual 10 min slump.

Village's verbals: A late dropout by the younger of Duncan Armsby's ginger haired warriors gave the away captain some problems.....I know who to call he thought.....'Limbo'!! And as expected Limbo dropped everything to help the club out and tanked his way over to Bath Uni... Well maybe tanked isn't the right word, as he was 10 minutes late and maybe he didn't help, cos we were winning 1-0 when he arrived.... oh well I am sure he appreciated the exercise, even if he did moan like a girl when I asked him to play right-half! Seriously though....THANKS LIMBO. Final result was 5-1 a couple of people looked a little rusty in particular a recent father, but all round a good performance and we are still unbeaten! Goals were scored by: Mason x2, Harris, Webster and Haslett

Platform's prose: It was a Wednesday night, it was raining and George was umpiring, which could mean only one thing: the 2nds were at home. A good win, 3-1 with sixty minutes of a great hockey and a dodgy ten minutes before half time when we allowed them back into the game at 1-1. Mooney got a hat-trick, and the second half was a case of just how many we would score, their keeper had a blinder. After he realised we were playing in red/green and stopped passing to the oppo Tommy Alger (after some altitude training in Egypt) was in fine fettle alongside Psycho and Cuttsy in the midfield who all put in energetic performances. Solid defending all round and some good goals - well done fellas

Coatesy's corner: The thirds ended up winning this match 2-1 with a strong second half performance that saw large periods of the game to be controlled and continued pressure put on the opposition.Starting with a 4-4-2 formation and after a slow start Westbury went 1-0 down after the captain gave the ball away on the edge of the 'D' for it to only be passed to a free man at the back post.Change of formation was required at half time which saw the team move to a 3-4-3 formation. This proved crucial as the midfield and forward lines were able to put increased pressure on the opposition goal. A good move which started down the left was nicely finsihed by Alex Taylor (1-1). The opposition started to press forward creating more space for us to exploit, which was capitalised when Sparky pounced on a saved shot from John Ludley. The game ended 5 mins early after Poker decided to do a Boris Johnson tackle on the opposition which ended in Poker getting a stick in the face, a trip to A&E and 4 stitches for his troubles. Thanks once again to Nick Morton for umpiring - much appreciated.

Palmer's prattle: This was an agonisingly close game. The C team played good controlled hockey in the first half and the defence coped comfortably with the visiting attack. Westbury had the better goalscoring chances, Duncan Ogilvie was unlucky when the ball wouldn't run to him when he was well placed. The best chance falling to Harry Newington who arrived on the end of a left wing cross to put the ball the wrong side of the post. Martin Rees playing his first game looked very strong along with Shep, George Banting and Paddy who shared the defensive duties. Martin Fey was outstanding at sweeper and pulled of some great interceptions. Mssrs Brown, Christopher, Harris and Cranfield gave us some bite in midfield. In the second half Chippenham took the lead. The C team then had a strong period of attacking play. A short corner shot from Martin Palmer was expertly miss-hit to Martin Fey who deftly flicked it over the keeper for an excellent goal. Chippenham had their best spell of the game and Sam Banting had to pull off some good saves to keep them out, but they managed to sneak a slightly lucky goal. Pete Thomas had the best chance to equalise in the closing stages, but it just wasn't to be. Yes this was a third defeat, but everyone gave 110% and team spirit still remains high despite this result.

Week 3
15/5/06 2nd XI ('A') v Bristol UWE A Div 2 2-4  Poulsom Moon
16/5/06 3rd XI ('B') v Warlocks H Div 3 4-6  Taylor A 2 Bell Coates
17/5/06 4th XI ('C') v N Bristol 'B' A Div 4 pst

Platform's prose: The 2nds went down to a narrow defeat 2-4 against a strong Bristol side last night. Given that only two recognised defenders were available and several people played out of position this was a good effort and in the end we can feel unlucky not to have drawn the match. We had more short corners and their keeper was the busier during the game overall but Bristol had one very sharp forward who scored an excellent hat-trick. Goal of the game came from Psycho who went on a wobble from about the half way line holding off several defenders before slipping it past the keeper. Their fourth goal came as we pressed for an equaliser near the end. Our other goal came from Mooney, who had a superb game, as did the whole team. Thanks to Psycho and Gareth for stepping in at very short notice and Roger for umpiring. Good effort fellas

Carter's copy:
